IRIDE White Book, An Interdisciplinary Research Infrastructure based on Dual Electron linacs&lasers

This report describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of IRIDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity 'particle factory', based on a combination of a high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linac and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. IRIDE will contribute to open new avenues of discoveries and to address most important riddles: What does matter consist of? What is the structure of proteins that have a fundamental role in life processes? What can we learn from protein structure to improve the treatment of diseases and to design more efficient drugs? But also how does an electronic chip behave under the effect of radiations? How can the heat flow in a large heat exchanger be optimized? The scientific potential of IRIDE is far reaching and justifies the construction of such a large facility in Italy in synergy with the national research institutes and companies and in the framework of the European and international research. It will impact also on R&D work for ILC, FEL, and will be complementarity to other large scale accelerator projects. IRIDE is also intended to be realized in subsequent stages of development depending on the assigned priorities.

Leakage Tests for Am-241 Solid Sources Used for Liquid Xenon Detector Monitoring

Experimental tests are described to check solid Am-241 radioactive sources used to monitor operation of liquid xenon detectors. In particular, radioactive leakage was tested in extreme temperature conditions following immersion in liquid nitrogen for different time periods. No radioactivity loss was detected from the sources considered. The paper describes the source characteristics, test methods and results obtained.

Jet analysis by Deterministic Annealing

We perform a comparison of two jet clusterization algorithms. The first one is the standard Durham algorithm and the second one is a global optimization scheme, Deterministic Annealing, often used in clusterization problems, and adapted to the problem of jet identification in particle production by high energy collisions; in particular we study hadronic jets in WW production by high energy electron positron scattering. Our results are as follows. First, we find that the two procedures give basically the same output as far as the particle clusterization is concerned. Second, we find that the increase of CPU time with the particle multiplicity is much faster for the Durham jet clustering algorithm in comparison with Deterministic Annealing. Since this result follows from the higher computational complexity of the Durham scheme, it should not depend on the particular process studied here and might be significant for jet physics at LHC as well.

JET ANALYSIS BY NEURAL NETWORKS IN HIGH ENERGY HADRON-HADRON COLLISIONS

We study the possibility to employ neural networks to simulate jet clustering procedures in high energy hadron-hadron collisions. We concentrate our analysis on the Fermilab Tevatron energy and on the $k_\bot$ algorithm. We consider both supervised multilayer feed-forward network trained by the backpropagation algorithm and unsupervised learning, where the neural network autonomously organizes the events in clusters.

Higgs Search by Neural Networks at LHC

We show that neural network classifiers can be used to discriminate Higgs production from background at LHC for $ 150< M_H<200$ GeV. The results compare favourably with ordinary multivariate analysis.
