Wavefront dislocations reveal the topology of quasi-1D photonic insulators

Phase singularities appear ubiquitously in wavefields, regardless of the wave equation. Such topological defects can lead to wavefront dislocations, as observed in a humongous number of classical wave experiments. Phase singularities of wave functions are also at the heart of the topological classification of the gapped phases of matter. Despite identical singular features, topological insulators and topological defects in waves remain two distinct fields. Realising 1D microwave insulators, we experimentally observe a wavefront dislocation - a 2D phase singularity - in the local density of states when the systems undergo a topological phase transition. We show theoretically that the change in the number of interference fringes at the transition reveals the topological index that characterises the band topology in the insulator.

Topological swing in Bloch oscillations

We report new oscillations of wavepackets in quantum walks subjected to electric fields, that decorate the usual Bloch-Zener oscillations of insulators. The number of turning points (or sub-oscillations) within one Bloch period of these oscillations is found to be governed by the winding of the quasienergy spectrum. Thus, this provides a new physical manifestation of a topological property of periodically driven systems that can be probed experimentally. Our model, based on an oriented scattering network, is readily implementable in photonic and cold atomic setups.

Topological chiral interface states beyond insulators

We show how to engineer a chiral spectral flow of interface states in a gapless system. Although the bulk bands touch -- thus making the topological indices of the bands ill-defined -- this spectral flow has a topological origin that makes it robust even when it coexists with the bulk bands. This phenomenon is illustrated with an adiabatically modulated photonic quantum walk.

Geometrical phase shift in Friedel oscillations

This work addresses the problem of elastic scattering through a localized impurity in a one-dimensional crystal with sublattice freedom degrees. The impurity yields long-range interferences in the local density of states known as Friedel oscillations. Here, we show that the internal degrees of freedom of Bloch waves are responsible for a geometrical phase shift in Friedel oscillations. The Fourier transform of the energy-resolved interference pattern reveals a topological property of this phase shift, which is intrinsically related to the Bloch band structure topology in the absence of impurity. Therefore, Friedel oscillations in the local density of states can be regarded as a probe of wave topological properties in a broad class of classical and quantum systems, such as acoustic and photonic crystals, ultracold atomic gases in optical lattices, and electronic compounds.

Chiral symmetry and bulk--boundary correspondence in periodically driven one-dimensional systems

Over the past few years, topological insulators have taken center stage in solid state physics. The desire to tune the topological invariants of the bulk and thus control the number of edge states has steered theorists and experimentalists towards periodically driving parameters of these systems. In such periodically driven setups, by varying the drive sequence the effective (Floquet) Hamiltonian can be engineered to be topological: then, the principle of bulk--boundary correspondence guarantees the existence of robust edge states. It has also been realized, however, that periodically driven systems can host edge states not predicted by the Floquet Hamiltonian. The exploration of such edge states, and the corresponding topological phases unique to periodically driven systems, has only recently begun. We contribute to this goal by identifying the bulk topological invariants of periodically driven one-dimensional lattice Hamiltonians with chiral symmetry. We find simple closed expressions for these invariants, as winding numbers of blocks of the unitary operator corresponding to a part of the time evolution, and ways to tune these invariants using sublattice shifts. We illustrate our ideas on the periodically driven Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model, which we map to a discrete time quantum walk, allowing theoretical results about either of these systems to be applied to the other. Our work helps interpret the results of recent simulations where a large number of Floquet Majorana fermions in periodically driven superconductors have been found, and of recent experiments on discrete time quantum walks.

The Zak phase and the existence of edge states in graphene

We develop a method to predict the existence of edge states in graphene ribbons for a large class of boundaries. This approach is based on the bulk-edge correspondence between the quantized value of the Zak phase Z(k), which is a Berry phase across an appropriately chosen one-dimensional Brillouin zone, and the existence of a localized state of momentum k at the boundary of the ribbon. This bulk-edge correspondence is rigorously demonstrated for a one dimensional toy model as well as for graphene ribbons with zigzag edges. The range of k for which edge states exist in a graphene ribbon is then calculated for arbitrary orientations of the edges. Finally, we show that the introduction of an anisotropy leads to a topological transition in terms of the Zak phase, which modifies the localization properties at the edges. Our approach gives a new geometrical understanding of edge states, it confirms and generalizes the results of several previous works.

A semi-Dirac point in the Hofstadter spectrum

The spectrum of tight binding electrons on a square lattice with half a magnetic flux quantum per unit cell exhibits two Dirac points at the band center. We show that, in the presence of an additional uniaxial staggered potential, this pair of Dirac points may merge into a single one, with a topological transition towards a gapped phase. At the transition, the spectrum is linear in one direction and quadratic in the other one (a spectrum recently named "hybrid" or "semi-Dirac"). This transition is studied in the framework of a general Hamiltonian describing the merging of Dirac points. The possibility of creating gauge fields for cold atoms in optical lattices may offer the first opportunity to observe this merging of Dirac points and the hybrid dispersion relation.

Phonon assisted dynamical Coulomb blockade in a thin suspended graphite sheet

The differential conductance in a suspended few layered graphene sample is fou nd to exhibit a series of quasi-periodic sharp dips as a function of bias at l ow temperature. We show that they can be understood within a simple model of dyn amical Coulomb blockade where energy exchanges take place between the charge carriers transmitted trough the sample and a dissipative electromagnetic envir onment with a resonant phonon mode strongly coupled to the electrons.
