Probing Majorana and Andreev Bound States with Waiting Times

We consider a biased Normal-Superconducting junction with various types of superconductivity. Depending on the class of superconductivity, a Majorana bound state may appear at the interface. We show that this has important consequences on the distribution of waiting times of electrons flowing out of such an interface. Therefore, the waiting time distribution is shown to be a clear fingerprint of Majorana bound state physics and may be considered as an experimental signature of its presence.

Waiting times of entangled electrons in normal-superconducting junctions

We consider a normal-superconducting junction in order to investigate the effect of new physical ingredients on waiting times. First, we study the interplay between Andreev and specular scattering at the interface on the distribution of waiting times of electrons or holes separately. In that case the distribution is not altered dramatically compared to the case of a single quantum channel with a quantum point contact since the interface acts as an Andreev mirror for holes. We then consider a fully entangled state originating from spliting of Cooper pairs at the interface and demonstrate a significant enhancement of the probability to detect two consecutive electrons in a short time interval. Finally, we discuss the electronic waiting time distribution in the more realistic situation of partial entanglement.

Josephson junction chains with long-range interactions: Phase slip proliferation versus Kosterlitz-Thouless transition

The role of long range badly screened Coulomb interactions in a one-dimensional chain of Josephson junctions is studied. Correlation functions for the phase correlator are obtained as a function of the Josephson coupling energy, the short range part of Coulomb repulsion and its long range component. Though quasi-long range order is no longer possible and the usual Kosterlitz-Thouless transition no longer exists, there are remnants of it. As an application, we calculate the $I-V$ curves for Andreev reflexion when a normal metal is placed in contact with the chain. Formally, there is always an offset voltage $V_0$ below which no current can flow, however, in some regimes $V_0$ can be negligible. Contrary to what happens without long-range interactions, the Andreev current, as a function of applied voltage, increases faster than any power law. Signatures of long range interactions and phase slips appear in the $I-V$ curves. Possible application for quasi one-dimensional thin superconducting wires is outlined.

Photo-assisted shot noise in Coulomb interacting systems

We consider the fluctuations of the electrical current (shot noise) in the presence of a voltage time-modulation. For a non-interacting metal, it is known that the derivative of the photo-assisted noise has a staircase behavior. In the presence of Coulomb interactions, we show that the photo-assisted noise presents a more complex profile, in particular for the two following systems: 1) a two-dimensional electron gas in the fractional quantum Hall regime for which we have obtained evenly spaced singularities in the noise derivative, with a spacing related to the filling factor and, 2) a carbon nanotube for which a smoothed staircase in the noise derivative is obtained.

Electron-electron interactions in a one-dimensional quantum wire spin filter

The combined presence of a Rashba and a Zeeman effect in a ballistic one-dimensional conductor generates a spin pseudogap and the possibility to propagate a beam with well defined spin orientation. Without interactions transmission through a barrier gives a relatively well polarized beam. Using renormalization group arguments, we examine how electron-electron interactions may affect the transmission coefficient and the polarization of the outgoing beam.

Photo--assisted current and shot noise in the fractional quantum Hall effect

The effect of an AC perturbation on the shot noise of a fractional quantum Hall fluid is studied both in the weak and the strong backscattering regimes. It is known that the zero-frequency current is linear in the bias voltage, while the noise derivative exhibits steps as a function of bias. In contrast, at Laughlin fractions, the backscattering current and the backscattering noise both exhibit evenly spaced singularities, which are reminiscent of the tunneling density of states singularities for quasiparticles. The spacing is determined by the quasiparticle charge $νe$ and the ratio of the DC bias with respect to the drive frequency. Photo--assisted transport can thus be considered as a probe for effective charges at such filling factors, and could be used in the study of more complicated fractions of the Hall effect. A non-perturbative method for studying photo--assisted transport at $ν=1/2$ is developed, using a refermionization procedure.

Electron injection in a nanotube: noise correlations and entanglement

Transport through a metallic carbon nanotube is considered, where electrons are injected in the bulk by a scanning tunneling microscope tip. The charge current and noise are computed both in the absence and in the presence of one dimensional Fermi liquid leads. For an infinite homogeneous nanotube, the shot noise exhibits effective charges different from the electron charge. Noise correlations between both ends of the nanotube are positive, and occur to second order only in the tunneling amplitude. The positive correlations are symptomatic of an entanglement phenomenon between quasiparticles moving right and left from the tip. This entanglement involves many body states of the boson operators which describe the collective excitations of the Luttinger liquid.

Andreev reflection off a fluctuating superconductor in the absence of equilibrium

Andreev reflection between a normal metal and a superconductor whose order parameter exhibits quantum phase fluctuations is examined. The approach chosen is non perturbative in the tunneling Hamiltonian and enables to probe the whole range of voltage biases up to the gap amplitude. Results are illustrated using the one-dimensional Josephson- Junction Array model previously introduced in the linear response regime. Phase fluctuations are shown to affect the differential conductance and are compared to the result of Blonder, Tinkham and Klapwijk for a rigid BCS superconductor. The noise spectrum of the Andreev current is also obtained and its second derivative with respect to frequency is proposed as a direct tool to analyze the phase fluctuations.

Klein Factors in multiple Fractional Quantum Hall edge tunneling

A fractional quantum Hall liquid with multiple edges is considered. The computation of transport quantities such as current, noise and noise cross correlations in such multiple edge samples requires the implementation of so called Klein factors, which insure the correct quasiparticle exchange properties. The commutation relations of these factors are obtained by closing the system into a single edge. The non-equilibrium Green's function formalism associated with such factors is derived for a simple Laughlin fraction of the Hall effect. It is shown explicitly how Klein factors enter the calculation of the noise cross correlations, as well as the correction to the Poisson limit for the noise.

Partition noise and statistics in the fractional quantum Hall effect

A microscopic theory of current partition in fractional quantum Hall liquids, described by chiral Luttinger liquids, is developed to compute the noise correlations, using the Keldysh technique. In this Hanbury-Brown and Twiss geometry, at Laughlin filling factor ν=1/3, the real time noise correlator exhibits oscillations which persist over larger time scales than that of an uncorrelated Hall fluid. The zero frequency noise correlations are negative at filling factor 1/3 as for bare electrons (anti-bunching), but are strongly reduced in amplitude. These correlations become positive (bunching) for ν\leq 1/5, suggesting a tendency towards bosonic behavior.

On the pseudogap phase in high-T_c superconductors

We describe the approach of the superconducting state as a sequence of cross-over phenomena. As the temperature is decreased, uncorrelated pairing of the electrons leads to the opening of a pseudogap at T_F^*. Upon further lowering the temperature those electron pairs acquire well behaved itinerant features at T_B^*, leading to partial Meissner screening and Drude type behavior of the optical conductivity. Further decrease of the temperature leads to their condensation and superconductivity at T_c. The analysis is done on the basis of the Boson-Fermion model in the cross-over regime between 2D and 3D.
