Superconducting density of states and vortex cores of 2H-NbS2

Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/S) measurements in the superconducting dichalcogenide 2H-NbS2 show a peculiar superconducting density of states with two well defined features at 0.97 meV and 0.53 meV, located respectively above and below the value for the superconducting gap expected from single band s-wave BCS model (D=1.76kBTc=0.9 meV). Both features have a continuous temperature evolution and disappear at Tc = 5.7 K. Moreover, we observe the hexagonal vortex lattice with radially symmetric vortices and a well developed localized state at the vortex cores. The sixfold star shape characteristic of the vortex lattice of the compound 2H-NbSe2 is, together with the charge density wave order (CDW), absent in 2H-NbS2.

Phenomenological template family for black-hole coalescence waveforms

Recent progress in numerical relativity has enabled us to model the non-perturbative merger phase of the binary black-hole coalescence problem. Based on these results, we propose a phenomenological family of waveforms which can model the inspiral, merger, and ring-down stages of black hole coalescence. We also construct a template bank using this family of waveforms and discuss its implementation in the search for signatures of gravitational waves produced by black-hole coalescences in the data of ground-based interferometers. This template bank might enable us to extend the present inspiral searches to higher-mass binary black-hole systems, i.e., systems with total mass greater than about 80 solar masses, thereby increasing the reach of the current generation of ground-based detectors.

Penetration depth study of superconducting gap structure of 2\textit{H}-NbSe$_2$

We report measurements of the temperature dependence of both in-plane and out-of-plane penetration depths ($λ_a$ and $λ_c$ respectively) in 2\textit{H}-NbSe$_2$. Measurements were made with a radio-frequency tunnel diode oscillator circuit at temperatures down to 100 mK. Analysis of the anisotropic superfluid density shows that a reduced energy gap is located on one or more of the quasi-two-dimensional Nb Fermi surface sheets rather than on the Se sheet, in contrast to some previous reports. This result suggests that the gap structure is not simply related to the weak electron-phonon coupling on the Se sheet and is therefore important for microscopic models of anisotropic superconductivity in this compound.

Binary black hole initial data for numerical general relativity based on post-Newtonian data

With the goal of taking a step toward the construction of astrophysically realistic initial data for numerical simulations of black holes, we for the first time derive a family of fully general relativistic initial data based on post-2-Newtonian expansions of the 3-metric and extrinsic curvature without spin. It is expected that such initial data provide a direct connection with the early inspiral phase of the binary system. We discuss a straightforward numerical implementation, which is based on a generalized puncture method. Furthermore, we suggest a method to address some of the inherent ambiguity in mapping post-Newtonian data onto a solution of the general relativistic constraints.
