Lattice Evidence for Gauge Field Localization on a Brane

We examine the problem of gauge-field localization in higher-dimensional gauge theories. In particular, we study a five-dimensional U(1) by lattice techniques and we find that gauge fields can indeed be localized. Two models are considered. The first one has anisotropic couplings independent of each other and of the coordinates. It can be realized on a homogeneous but anisotropic flat Euclidean space. The second model has couplings depending on the extra transverse fifth direction. This model can be realized by a U(1) gauge theory on the Randall-Sundrum background. We find that in both models a new phase exists, the layer phase, in which a massless photon is localized on the four-dimensional layers. We find that this phase is separated from the strong coupling phase by a second order phase transition.

Decoupling of Layers in the Three-dimensional Abelian Higgs Model

The Abelian Higgs model with anisotropic couplings in 2+1 dimensions is studied in both the compact and non-compact formulations. Decoupling of the space-like planes takes place in the extreme anisotropic limit, so charged particles and gauge fields are presumably localized within these planes. The behaviour of the model under the influence of an external magnetic field is examined in the compact case and yields further characterization of the phases.

The Abelian Higgs Model in Three Dimensions with Improved Action

We study the Abelian Higgs Model using an improved form of the action in the scalar sector. The subleading corrections are carefully analysed and the connection between lattice and continuous parameters is worked out. The simulation shows a remarkable improvement of the numerical performance.

Three-dimensional lattice U(1) gauge-Higgs model at low $m_H$

We study the non-compact version of the U(1) gauge-Higgs model in three dimensions for $m_H = 30 GeV.$ We found that, using this formulation, rather modest lattices approach quite well the infinite volume behaviour. The phase transition is first order, as expected for this Higgs mass. The latent heat (in units of $T_{cr}^4$) is compatible with the predictions of the two-loop effective potential; it is an order of magnitude less than the corresponding SU(2) value. The transition temperature and $<φ^* φ>$ in units of the critical temperature are also compatible with the perturbative results.

Supercompositeness Inspired From Superstrings

String Unified Models based on the $k=1$ level of the Kac-Moody Algebra, predict the existence of ``exotic'' new states which carry fractional electric charges. We analyse the possibility of considering these ``exotics'' as preonic matter which can be used to form the families and the gauge group breaking higgs scalars. It is proposed that such a formation may occur provided that these states transform non-trivially under a non-Abelian gauge group with a relatively large rank in order to confine them at a sufficiently large scale. Such a situation is natural in string derived unified models, since the role of the confining group can be played by (part of) the Hidden symmetry. As an example, we present a string derived toy model based on the $SU(4)\times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ Pati-Salam gauge group.
