Instability of the rhodium magnetic moment as origin of the metamagnetic phase transition in alpha-FeRh

Based on ab initio total energy calculations we show that two magnetic states of rhodium atoms together with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions are responsible for a temperature induced metamagnetic phase transition, which experimentally is observed for stoichiometric alpha-FeRh. A first-principle spin-based model allows to reproduce this first-order metamagnetic transition by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Further inclusion of spacial variation of exchange parameters leads to a realistic description of the experimental magneto-volume effects in alpha-FeRh.

Strong interaction of correlated electrons with phonons: Exchange of phonon clouds by polarons

We investigate the interaction of strongly correlated electrons with phonons in the frame of the Hubbard-Holstein model. The electron-phonon interaction is considered to be strong and is an important parameter of the model besides the Coulomb repulsion of electrons and band filling. This interaction with the nondispersive optical phonons has been transformed to the problem of mobile polarons by using the canonical transformation of Lang and Firsov. We discuss in particular the case for which the on-site Coulomb repulsion is exactly cancelled by the phonon-mediated attractive interaction and suggest that polarons exchanging phonon clouds can lead to polaron pairing and superconductivity. It is then the frequency of the collective mode of phonon clouds being larger than the bare frequency, which determines the superconducting transition temperature.

Perturbation expansion for 2-D Hubbard model

We develop an efficient method to calculate the third-order corrections to the self-energy of the hole-doped two-dimensional Hubbard model in space-time representation. Using the Dyson equation we evaluate the renormalized spectral function in various parts of the Brillouin zone and find significant modifications with respect to the second-order theory even for rather small values of the coupling constant U. The spectral function becomes unphysical for $ U \simeq W $, where W is the half-width of the conduction band. Close to the Fermi surface and for U<W, the single-particle spectral weight is reduced in a finite energy interval around the Fermi energy. The increase of U opens a gap between the occupied and unoccupied parts of the spectral function.

Monte Carlo simulations of magnetovolume instabilities in anti-Invar systems

We perform constant pressure Monte Carlo simulations of a spin-analogous model which describes coupled spatial and magnetic degrees of freedom on an fcc lattice. Our calculations qualitatively reproduce magnetovolume effects observed in some rare earth manganese compounds, especially in the anti-Invar material YMn2. These are a sudden collapse of the magnetic moment which is connected with a huge volume change, and a largely enhanced thermal expansion coefficient.

Lattice Dynamics of Martensitic Transformations Examined by Atomistic Simulations

We have performaed molecular dynamics simulations of Fe(80)Ni(20) alloys using an inter-atomic potential of the EAM-type which allows the simulation of the martensite-austenite transition. We present results, showing the development of an inhomogeneous shear system on a nanoscale during the thermally induced austenitic transition. In addition to this we obtained the phonon dispersion relations of the martensite phase by calculating the dynamical structure factor from our simulation results. On approaching the transition temperature the phonon dispersion shows anomalies which might be connected with the formation of the microstructure during the austenitic transition.
