Three Types of Galaxy Disks

We present our new scheme for the classification of radial stellar surface brightness profiles for disk galaxies. We summarize the current theoretical attempts to understand their origin and give an example of an application by comparing local galaxies with their counterparts at high redshift (z~1).

GOYA Survey: U and B Number Counts in the Groth-Westphal Strip

We present U and B galaxy differential number counts from a field of ~900 arcmin^2, based on GOYA Survey imaging of the HST Groth-Westphal strip. Source detection efficiency corrections as a function of the object size have been applied. A variation of the half-exposure image method has been devised to identify and remove spurious detections. Achieved 50% detection efficiencies are 24.8 mag in U and 25.5 mag in B in the Vega system. Number count slopes are d log (N)/dm = 0.50 +/- 0.02 for B=21.0-24.5, and d log (N)/dm = 0.48 +/- 0.03 for U=21.0-24.0. Simple number count models are presented that simultaneously reproduce the counts over 15 mag in U and B,and over 10 mag in K_s, using a Lambda-dominated cosmology and SDSS local luminosity functions. Only by setting a recent z_f ~ 1.5 formation redshift for early-type, red galaxies do the models reproduce the change of slope observed at Ks = 17.5 in NIR counts. A moderate optical depth (tau_B = 0.6) for all galaxy types ensures that the recent formation for ellipticals does not leave a signature in the U or B number counts, which are featureless at intermediate magnitudes. No ad-hoc disappearing populations are needed to explain the counts if number evolution is introduced using an observationally-based z-evolution of the merger fraction.

Stellar Disk Truncations: Where do we stand ?

In the light of several recent developments we revisit the phenomenon of galactic stellar disk truncations. Even 25 years since the first paper on outer breaks in the radial light profiles of spiral galaxies, their origin is still unclear. The two most promising explanations are that these 'outer edges' either trace the maximum angular momentum during the galaxy formation epoch, or are associated with global star formation thresholds. Depending on their true physical nature, these outer edges may represent an improved size characteristic (e.g., as compared to D_25) and might contain fossil evidence imprinted by the galaxy formation and evolutionary history. We will address several observational aspects of disk truncations: their existence, not only in normal HSB galaxies, but also in LSB and even dwarf galaxies; their detailed shape, not sharp cut-offs as thought before, but in fact demarcating the start of a region with a steeper exponential distribution of starlight; their possible association with bars; as well as problems related to the line-of-sight integration for edge-on galaxies (the main targets for truncation searches so far). Taken together, these observations currently favour the star-formation threshold model, but more work is necessary to implement the truncations as adequate parameters characterising galactic disks.

The nature of luminous X-ray sources with mid-infrared counterparts

We investigate the luminous X-ray sources in the Lockman Hole (LH) and the Extended Groth Strip (EGS) detected at 24microns using MIPS and also with IRAC on board Spitzer. We assemble optical/infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for 45 X-ray/24micron sources in the EGS and LH. Only about 1/4 of the hard X-ray/24micron sources show pure type 1 AGN SEDs. More than half of the X-ray/24micron sources have stellar-emission-dominated or obscured SEDs, similar to those of local type 2 AGN and spiral/starburst galaxies. One-third of the sources detected in hard X-rays do not have a 24micron counterpart. Two such sources in the LH have SEDs resembling those of S0/elliptical galaxies. The broad variety of SEDs in the optical-to-Spitzer bands of X-ray selected AGN means that AGN selected according to the behavior in the optical/infrared will have to be supplemented by other kinds of data (e.g., X-ray) to produce unbiased samples of AGN.

A photometric method to determine supermassive black hole masses

We report the discovery of a strong correlation between the shape of a bulge's light-profile and the mass of its central supermassive black hole (M_{bh}). We find that log(M_{bh}/M_{sun}) = 2.91(+/-0.38)log(n) + 6.37(+/-0.21), where `n' is the Sersic r^{1/n} shape index of the bulge. This correlation is marginally stronger than the relationship between the logarithm of the stellar velocity dispersion and log(M_{bh}) and has comparable scatter. It therefore offers a cheap (in terms of telescope time) alternative to estimating the masses of supermassive black holes.

NGC 4340: Double Bar + Fossil Nuclear Ring

NGC 4340 is a double-barred SB0 galaxy in the Virgo cluster (Wozniak et al. 1995). Here, we present evidence that this galaxy also posseses a luminous stellar nuclear ring of relatively old stars with little or no gas. The ring lies just outside the inner bar, at the probable inner inner Lindblad resonance (IILR) of the outer bar. Careful inspection of the isophotes and unsharp masks shows that the two bars are slightly misaligned, which suggests they may be independently rotating.
