Solution of the Dyson equation for nucleons in the superfluid phase

We investigate the role the interweaving of surface vibrations and nucleon motion has on Cooper pair formation in spherical superfluid nuclei. A quantitative calculation of the state-dependent pairing gap requires to go beyond the quasiparticle approximation, treating in detail the breaking of the single-particle strength and of the associated poles. This is done solving self-consistently the Dyson equation, including both a bare nucleon-nucleon interaction (which for simplicity we choose as a monopole-pairing force of constant matrix elements g) and an induced interaction arizing from the exchange of vibrations (calculated microscopically in QRPA) between pairs of nucleons moving in time reversal states. Both the normal and anomalous density Green functions are included, thus treating self-energy and pairing processes on equal footing. We apply the formalism to the superfluid nucleus 120Sn. Adjusting the value of g so as to reproduce, for levels close to the Fermi level, the empirical odd-even mass difference (Delta approx 1.4 MeV), it is found that the pairing gap receives about equal contributions from the monopole-pairing force and from the induced interaction. Description of Double Giant Dipole Resonance within the Phonon Damping Model

In a recent Letter [1] an overall agreement with the experimental data for the excitation of the single and double giant dipole resonances in relativistic heavy ion collision in 136Xe and 208Pb nuclei has been reported. We point out that this agreement is achieved by a wrong calculation of the DGDR excitation mechanism. We also argue that the agreement with the data for the widths of resonances is achieved by an unrealistically large value of a model parameter. QRPA plus Phonon Coupling Model and the Photoabsorbtion Cross Section for $^{18,20,22}$O

We have calculated the electric dipole strength distributions in the unstable neutron rich oxygen isotopes $^{18,20,22}$O, in a model which include up to four quasi-particle-type configurations. The model is the extension, to include the effect of the pairing correlations, of a previous model very successful around closed shell nuclei, and it is based on the quasi-particle-phonon coupling. Low-lying dipole strength is found, which exhausts between 5 and 10% of the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn (TRK) energy-weighted-sum-rule (EWSR) below 15 MeV excitation energy, in rather good agreement with recent experimental data. The role of the phonon coupling is shown to be crucial in order to obtain this result.

Anharmonic properties of double giant dipole resonance

A systematic microscopic study of the anharmonic properties of the double giant dipole resonance (DGDR) has been carried out, for the first time, for nuclei with mass number $A$ spanning the whole mass table. It is concluded that the corrections of the energy centroid of the $J^π = 0^+$ and $2^+$ components of the DGDR from its harmonic limit are negative, have a value of the order of few hundred keV and follow an $A^{-1}$ dependence.

On dipole compression modes in nuclei

Isoscalar dipole strength distributions in spherical medium- and heavy-mass nuclei are calculated within random phase approximation (RPA) or quasiparticle RPA. Different Skyrme-type interactions corresponding to incompressibilities in the range 200 - 250 MeV are used. The results are discussed in comparison with existing data on isoscalar giant dipole resonances. Two main issues are raised, firstly the calculated giant resonance energies are somewhat higher than the observed ones, and secondly a sizable fraction of strength is predicted below 20 MeV which needs to be experimentally confirmed.

Compression modes in nuclei: microscopic models with Skyrme interactions

The isoscalar giant monopole resonances (ISGMR) and giant dipole resonances (ISGDR) in medium-heavy nuclei are investigated in the framework of HF+RPA and HF-BCS+QRPA with Skyrme effective interactions. It is found that pairing has little effect on these modes. It is also found that the coupling of the RPA states to 2p-2h configurations results in about (or less than) 1 MeV shifts of the resonance energies and at the same time gives the correct total widths. For the ISGMR, comparison with recent data leads to a value of nuclear matter compression modulus close to 215 MeV. However, a discrepancy between calculated and measured energies of the ISGDR in $^{208}$Pb is found and remains an open problem.

Anharmonic collective excitation in a solvable model

We apply the time-dependent variational principle, the nuclear field theory, and the boson expansion method to the Lipkin model to discuss anharmonicities of collective vibrational excitations. It is shown that all of these approaches lead to the same anharmonicity to leading order in the number of particles. Comparison with the exact solution of the Lipkin model shows that these theories reproduce it quite well.

Restoration of Isospin Symmetry in Highly Excited Nuclei

Explicit relations between the isospin mixing probability, the spreading width $Γ_{IAS}^{\downarrow}$ of the Isobaric Analog State (IAS) and the statistical decay width $Γ_c$ of the compound nucleus at finite excitation energy, are derived by using the Feshbach projection formalism. The temperature dependence of the isospin mixing probability is discussed quantitatively for the first time by using the values of $Γ_{IAS}^{\downarrow}$ and of $Γ_c$ calculated by means of microscopic models. It is shown that the mixing probability remains essentially constant up to a temperature of the order of 1 MeV and then decreases to about 1/4 of its zero temperature value, at higher temperature than $\approx$ 3 MeV, due to the short decay time of the compound system.

Response function beyond mean field of neutron-rich nuclei

The damping of single-particle and collective motion in exotic isotopes is a new topic and its study may shed light on basic problems of nuclear dynamics. For instance, it is known that nuclear structure calculations are not able, as a rule, to account completely for the empirical single-particle damping. In this contribution, we present calculations of the single-particle self-energy in the case of the neutron-rich light nucleus $^{28}$O, by taking proper care of the continuum, and we show that there are important differences with the case of nuclei along the valley of stability.

On the Origin of Nuclear Superfluidity

The induced pairing interaction arising from the exchange of collective surface vibrations among nucleons moving in time reversal states close to the Fermi energy is found to lead to values of the pairing gap which are similar to those experimentally observed.

Widths of Isobaric Analog Resonances: a microscopic approach

A self-consistent particle-phonon coupling model is used to investigate the properties of the isobaric analog resonance in $^{208}$Bi. It is shown that quantitative agreement with experimental data for the energy and the width can be obtained if the effects of isospin-breaking nuclear forces are included, in addition to the Coulomb force effects. A connection between microscopic model predictions and doorway state approaches which make use of the isovector monopole resonance, is established via a phenomenological ansatz for the optical potential.

Competition Between Particle-Hole and Particle-Particle Correlations in Forbidden Electron Capture: the Case of $^{123}$Te

The K-electron capture half-life of $^{123}$Te has been recently measured to be $t^K_{exp}=2.4\times 10^{19}$ yr, and constitutes the longest half-life ever measured in a single $β$-transition of any nuclear species. We have calculated this second unique forbidden transition within the framework of the proton-neutron quasi-particle random phase approximation, making use of Skyrme-type effective interactions. A strong cancellation effect between particle-hole and particle-particle correlations is found. The model, without any renormalization of the force, provides a lower limit for the K-electron capture half-life of $\sim 10^{17}$ yr, which unambiguously rules out the old experimental values of $10^{13} - 10^{14}$ yr. A few percent increase of the particle-particle matrix elements of the Skyrme interaction allows to reproduce the experimental findings.

Effects of angular momentum projection on the nuclear partition function and the observation of the giant dipole resonance in hot nuclei

Procedures for projecting angular momentum in a model describing a hot nucleus that takes into account large-amplitude quadrupole fluctuations are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the effect angular-momentum projection has on the observables associated with the $γ$-decay of the giant-dipole resonance (GDR). We also elaborate on which of the different projection methods provides the best overall description of the GDR, including angular distributions. The main consequence of angular-momentum projection is the appearance of an effective volume element in the integrals associated with the thermal average of the physical observables. This effective volume element is controlled by the value of the moments of inertia of the system. In the limit of rigid-body moments of inertia, the effective volume element is found to differ only slightly from the volume element associated with the normalization of the five-dimensional quadrupole oscillator wavefunction in the $β$, $γ$, and $Ω$ space, namely $D[α]=β^4dβsin(3γ)dγdΩ$. In the limit of irrotational flow moments of inertia, the leading behavior in the $β$ degree of freedom is $D[α]\propto βdβ$.

The Spectral Line Shape of Exotic Nuclei

The quadrupole strength function of $^{28}O$ is calculated making use of the SIII interaction, within the framework of continuum-RPA and taking into account collisions among the nucleons (doorway coupling). The centroid of the giant resonance is predicted at $\approx 14$ MeV, that is much below the energy expected for both isoscalar and isovector quadrupole resonances in nuclei along the stability valley. About half of this width arises from the coupling of the resonance to the continuum and about half is due to doorway coupling. This result is similar to that obtained in the study of giant resonances in light, $β$-stable nuclei, and shows the lack of basis for the expectation, entertained until now in the literature, that continuum decay was the main damping mechanism of giant resonances in halo nuclei.

Behavior of the giant-dipole resonance in $^{120}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb at high excitation energ

The properties of the giant-dipole resonance (GDR) are calculated as a function of excitation energy, angular momentum, and the compound nucleus particle decay width in the nuclei $^{120}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb, and are compared with recent experimental data. Differences observed in the behavior of the full-width-at-half-maximum of the GDR for $^{120}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb are attributed to the fact that shell corrections in $^{208}$Pb are stronger than in $^{120}$Sn, and favor the spherical shape at low temperatures. The effects shell corrections have on both the free energy and the moments of inertia are discussed in detail. At high temperature, the FWHM in $^{120}$Sn exhibits effects due to the evaporation width of the compound nucleus, while these effects are predicted for $^{208}$Pb.

Neutrino Capture Cross Sections for Ar-40 and beta-decay of Ti-40

Shell-model calculations of solar neutrino absorption cross sections for $^{40}$Ar, the proposed component of the ICARUS detector, are presented. It is found that low-lying Gamow-Teller transitions lead to a significant enhancement of the absorption rate over that expected from the Fermi transition between the isobaric analog states, leading to an overall absorption rate of 6.7 SNU. We also note that the pertinent Gamow-Teller transitions in $^{\sss 40}$Ar are experimentally accessible from the $β$-decay of the mirror nucleus $^{\sss 40}$Ti. Predictions for the branching ratios to states in $^{\sss 40}$Sc are presented, and the theoretical halflife of 53~ms is found to be in good agreement with the experimental value of $56^{+18}_{-12}$~ms.

Escape and Spreading Properties of Charge-Exchange Resonances in Bi 208

The properties of charge-exchange excitations of ${}^ {208}$Pb with $ΔL = 0$, i.e., the isobaric analog and Gamow-Teller resonances, are studied within a self-consistent model making use of an effective force of the Skyrme type. The well-known isobaric analog case is used to assess the reliability of the model. The calculated properties of the Gamow-Teller resonance are compared with recent experimental measurements with the aim of better understanding the microscopic structure of this mode.
