Bipartite Sachdev-Ye Models with Read-Saleur Symmetries

We introduce an SU(M)-symmetric disordered bipartite spin model with unusual characteristics. Although superficially similar to the Sachdev-Ye model, it has several markedly different properties for M>2. In particular, it has a large non-trivial nullspace whose dimension grows exponentially with system size. The states in this nullspace are frustration-free, and are ground states when the interactions are ferromagnetic. The exponential growth of the nullspace leads to Hilbert-space fragmentation and a violation of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. We demonstrate that the commutant algebra responsible for this fragmentation is a non-trivial subalgebra of the Read-Saleur commutant algebra of certain nearest-neighbour models such as the spin-1 biquadratic spin chain. We also discuss the low-energy behaviour of correlations for the disordered version of this model in the limit of a large number of spins and large M, using techniques similar to those applied to the SY model. We conclude by generalizing the Shiraishi-Mori embedding formalism to non-local models, and apply it to turn some of our nullspace states into quantum many-body scars.

Dynamics at and near conformal quantum critical points

We explore the dynamical behavior at and near a special class of two-dimensional quantum critical points. Each is a conformal quantum critical point (CQCP), where in the scaling limit the equal-time correlators are those of a two-dimensional conformal field theory. The critical theories include the square-lattice quantum dimer model, the quantum Lifshitz theory, and a deformed toric code model. We show that under generic perturbation the latter flows toward the ordinary Lorentz-invariant (2+1) dimensional Ising critical point, illustrating that CQCPs are generically unstable. We exploit a correspondence between the classical and quantum dynamical behavior in such systems to perform an extensive numerical study of two lines of CQCPs in a quantum eight-vertex model, or equivalently, two coupled deformed toric codes. We find that the dynamical critical exponent z remains 2 along the U(1)-symmetric quantum Lifshitz line, while it continuously varies along the line with only Z_2 symmetry. This illustrates how two CQCPs can have very different dynamical properties, despite identical equal-time ground-state correlators. Our results equally apply to the dynamics of the corresponding purely classical models.

Condensation of magnons and spinons in a frustrated ladder

Motivated by the ever-increasing experimental effort devoted to the properties of frustrated quantum magnets in a magnetic field, we present a careful and detailed theoretical analysis of a one-dimensional version of this problem, a frustrated ladder with a magnetization plateau at m=1/2. We show that even for purely isotropic Heisenberg interactions, the magnetization curve exhibits a rather complex behavior that can be fully accounted for in terms of simple elementary excitations. The introduction of anisotropic interactions (e.g., Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions) modifies significantly the picture and reveals an essential difference between integer and fractional plateaux. In particular, anisotropic interactions generically open a gap in the region between the plateaux, but we show that this gap closes upon entering fractional plateaux. All of these conclusions, based on analytical arguments, are supported by extensive Density Matrix Renormalization Group calculations.

Classical dimers on the triangular lattice

We study the classical hard-core dimer model on the triangular lattice. Following Kasteleyn's fundamental theorem on planar graphs, this problem is soluble by Pfaffians. This model is particularly interesting for, unlike the dimer problems on the bipartite square and hexagonal lattices, its correlations are short ranged with a correlation length of less than one lattice constant. We compute the dimer-dimer and monomer-monomer correlators, and find that the model is deconfining: the monomer-monomer correlator falls off exponentially to a constant value sin(pi/12)/sqrt(3) = .1494..., only slightly below the nearest-neighbor value of 1/6. We also consider the anisotropic triangular lattice model in which the square lattice is perturbed by diagonal bonds of one orientation and small fugacity. We show that the model becomes non-critical immediately and that this perturbation is equivalent to adding a mass term to each of two Majorana fermions that are present in the long wavelength limit of the square-lattice problem.

Differential equations and duality in massless integrable field theories at zero temperature

Functional relations play a key role in the study of integrable models. We argue in this paper that for massless field theories at zero temperature, these relations can in fact be interpreted as monodromy relations. Combined with a recently discovered duality, this gives a way to bypass the Bethe ansatz, and compute directly physical quantities as solutions of a linear differential equation, or as integrals over a hyperelliptic curve. We illustrate these ideas in details in the case of the $c=1$ theory, and the associated boundary sine-Gordon model.

Hyperelliptic curves for multi-channel quantum wires and the multi-channel Kondo problem

We study the current in a multi-channel quantum wire and the magnetization in the multi-channel Kondo problem. We show that at zero temperature they can be written simply in terms of contour integrals over a (two-dimensional) hyperelliptic curve. This allows one to easily demonstrate the existence of weak-coupling to strong-coupling dualities. In the Kondo problem, the curve is the same for under- and over-screened cases; the only change is in the contour.

Self-duality in quantum impurity problems

We establish the existence of an exact non-perturbative self-duality in a variety of quantum impurity problems, including the Luttinger liquid or quantum wire with impurity. The former is realized in the fractional quantum Hall effect, where the duality interchanges electrons with Laughlin quasiparticles. We discuss the mathematical structure underlying this property, which bears an intriguing resemblance with the work of Seiberg and Witten on supersymmetric non-abelian gauge theory.

Reply to Skorik's Comment

In a series of papers we combined the Bethe ansatz with a kinetic (Boltzmann) equation in order to compute exactly transport properties in a Luttinger liquid with an impurity. In a recent comment [cond-mat/9708163], Skorik claimed that while our results were correct in linear response, there was a ``serious flaw'' in our calculation at finite voltage. We explain here why Skorik's arguments are inappropriate, and that there is no flaw in our work [cond-mat/9408068; cond-mat/9505031; cond-mat/9503172].

Non-equilibrium DC noise in a Luttinger liquid with impurity

We compute exactly the non-equilibrium DC noise in a Luttinger liquid with an impurity and an applied voltage. By generalizing Landauer transport theory for Fermi liquids to interacting, integrable systems, we relate this noise to the density fluctuations of quasiparticles. We then show how to compute these fluctuations using the Bethe ansatz. The non-trivial density correlations from the interactions result in a substantial part of the non-equilibrium noise. The final result for the noise is a scaling function of the voltage, temperature and impurity coupling. It may eventually be observable in tunneling between edges of a fractional quantum Hall effect device.

A unified framework for the Kondo problem and for an impurity in a Luttinger liquid

We develop a unified theoretical framework for the anisotropic Kondo model and the boundary sine-Gordon model. They are both boundary integrable quantum field theories with a quantum-group spin at the boundary which takes values, respectively, in standard or cyclic representations of the quantum group $SU(2)_q$. This unification is powerful, and allows us to find new results for both models. For the anisotropic Kondo problem, we find exact expressions (in the presence of a magnetic field) for all the coefficients in the ``Anderson-Yuval'' perturbative expansion. Our expressions hold initially in the very anisotropic regime, but we show how to continue them beyond the Toulouse point all the way to the isotropic point using an analog of dimensional regularization. For the boundary sine-Gordon model, which describes an impurity in a Luttinger liquid, we find the non-equilibrium conductance for all values of the Luttinger coupling.

Exact non-equilibrium transport through point contacts in quantum wires and fractional quantum Hall devices

We have recently calculated exact non-equilibrium quantum transport properties through a point contact in a Luttinger liquid. Using a particular quasiparticle basis of the Hilbert space dictated by integrability, we here compute explicitly the exact $I(V)$ characteristic and conductance out of equilibrium as a function of driving voltage $V$ and temperature $T$. These are described by universal scaling functions of two variables, the scaled point-contact interaction strength, and $V/T$. The differential-conductance curve as a function of the interaction strength broadens significantly as $V/T$ is increased, and develops a pronounced maximum at a (universal) critical value $(e V/k_B T)=7.18868...$. In addition, we derive an exact duality between strong and weak backscattering. The theory presented here has recently been realized experimentally in resonant tunneling-transport experiments between edge states in fractional quantum Hall effect devices. In this context the exact duality is between electron tunneling and Laughlin-quasiparticle tunneling.

Exact perturbative solution of the Kondo problem

We explicitly evaluate the infinite series of integrals that appears in the "Anderson-Yuval" reformulation of the anisotropic Kondo problem in terms of a one-dimensional Coulomb gas. We do this by developing a general approach relating the anisotropic Kondo problem of arbitrary spin with the boundary sine-Gordon model, which describes impurity tunneling in a Luttinger liquid and in the fractional quantum Hall effect. The Kondo solution then follows from the exact perturbative solution of the latter model in terms of Jack polynomials.

Exact non-equilibrium DC shot noise in Luttinger liquids and fractional quantum Hall devices

A point contact in a Luttinger liquid couples the left- and right-moving channels, producing shot noise. We calculate exactly the DC shot noise at zero temperature in the out-of-equilibrium steady state where current is flowing. Integrability of the interaction ensures the existence of a quasiparticle basis where quasiparticles scatter ``one by one'' off the point contact. This enables us to apply a direct generalization of the Landauer approach to shot noise to this interacting model. We find a simple relation of the noise to the current and the differential conductance. Our results should be experimentally-testable in a fractional quantum Hall effect device, providing a clear signal of the fractional charge of the Laughlin quasiparticles.

Solving 1d plasmas and 2d boundary problems using Jack polynomials and functional relations

The general one-dimensional ``log-sine'' gas is defined by restricting the positive and negative charges of a two-dimensional Coulomb gas to live on a circle. Depending on charge constraints, this problem is equivalent to different boundary field theories. We study the electrically neutral case, which is equivalent to a two-dimensional free boson with an impurity cosine potential. We use two different methods: a perturbative one based on Jack symmetric functions, and a non-perturbative one based on the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and functional relations. The first method allows us to compute explicitly all coefficients in the virial expansion of the free energy and the experimentally-measurable conductance. Some results for correlation functions are also presented. The second method provides in particular a surprising fluctuation-dissipation relation between the free energy and the conductance.

Exact solution of a massless scalar field with a relevant boundary interaction

We solve exactly the "boundary sine-Gordon" system of a massless scalar field ϕwith a \cos[βϕ/2] potential at a boundary. This model has appeared in several contexts, including tunneling between quantum-Hall edge states and in dissipative quantum mechanics. For β^2 < 8π, this system exhibits a boundary renormalization-group flow from Neumann to Dirichlet boundary conditions. By taking the massless limit of the sine-Gordon model with boundary potential, we find the exact S matrix for particles scattering off the boundary. Using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, we calculate the boundary entropy along the entire flow. We show how these particles correspond to wave packets in the classical Klein-Gordon equation, thus giving a more precise explanation of scattering in a massless theory.

Exact Theory of Polymer Adsorption in Analogy with the Kondo Problem

We conjecture the exact scaling theory for the adsorption of two-dimensional polymers by using boundary S matrices. We compute the boundary free energy (the ``g-function''), study the flow from adsorbed to desorbed phase, and derive the crossover exponent and all the geometrical exponents at the transition. More generally, we solve the special transition in the O(n) model, the polymer case corresponding to n=0. The n=2 limit appears identical to the ordinary Kondo problem.

Deriving Boundary S Matrices

We show how to derive exact boundary $S$ matrices for integrable quantum field theories in 1+1 dimensions using lattice regularization. We do this calculation explicitly for the sine-Gordon model with fixed boundary conditions using the Bethe ansatz for an XXZ-type spin chain in a boundary magnetic field. Our results agree with recent conjectures of Ghoshal and Zamolodchikov, and indicate that the only solutions to the Bethe equations which contribute to the scaling limit are the standard strings.
