Strategies for COVID-19 vaccination under a shortage scenario: a geo-stochastic modelling approach

In a world being hit by waves of COVID-19, vaccination is a light on the horizon. However, the roll-out of vaccination strategies and their influence on the pandemic are still open problems. In order to compare the effect of various strategies proposed by the World Health Organization and other authorities, a previously developed SEIRS stochastic model of geographical spreading of the virus is extended by adding a compartment for vaccinated people. The parameters of the model were fitted to describe the pandemic evolution in Argentina, Mexico and Spain to analyze the effect of the proposed vaccination strategies. The mobility parameters allow to simulate different social behaviors (e.g. lock-down interventions). Schemes in which vaccines are applied homogeneously in all the country, or limited to the most densely-populated areas, are simulated and compared. The second strategy is found to be more effective. Moreover, under the current global shortage of vaccines, it should be remarked that immunization is enhanced when mobility is reduced. Additionally, repetition of vaccination campaigns should be timed considering the immunity lapse of the vaccinated (and recovered) people. Finally, the model is extended to include the effect of isolation of detected positive cases, shown to be important to reduce infections.

Coulomb and tunneling coupled trilayer systems at zero magnetic field

The ground-state electronic configuration of three coupled bidimensional electron gases has been determined using a variational Hartree-Fock approach, at zero magnetic field. The layers are Coulomb coupled, and tunneling is present between neighboring layers. In the limit of small separation between layers, the tunneling becomes the dominant energy contribution, while for large distance between layers the physics is driven by the Hartree electrostatic energy. Transition from tunneling to hartree dominated physics is shifted towards larger layer separation values as the total bidimensional density of the trilayers decreases. The inter-layer exchange helps in stabilize a "balanced" configuration, where the three layers are approximately equally occupied; most of the experiments are performed in the vicinity of this balanced configuration. Several ground-state configurations are consequence of a delicate interplay between tunneling and inter-subband exchange.

Cicada's wings as determinant factor for the sound emission: The case of \textit{Quesada gigas}

Cicadas (Homoptera:Cicadidae) are insects able to produce loudly songs and it is known that the mechanism to produce sound of tymballing cicadas works as a Helmholtz resonator. In this work we offer evidence on the participation of the wings in a high quality resonating process which defines the details of the acoustic properties of the calling song. The study is carry on \textit{Quesada gigas} species and it is dividied in three stages: (i) the acoustical characterization of the abdominal cavity, (ii) the record and calculation of frequency spectrum of the calling song, and (iii) the measurement of the vibration modes of the wings. The comparison between all the results unequivocally show the dramatic influence of the wings in the moment in which the insect emits its calling song.

Evidence of breakdown of the spin symmetry in diluted 2D electron gases

Recent claims of an experimental demonstration of spontaneous spin polarisation in dilute electron gases \cite{young99} revived long standing theoretical discussions \cite{ceper99,bloch}. In two dimensions, the stabilisation of a ferromagnetic fluid might be hindered by the occurrence of the metal-insulator transition at low densities \cite{abra79}. To circumvent localisation in the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) we investigated the low populated second electron subband, where the disorder potential is mainly screened by the high density of the first subband. This letter reports on the breakdown of the spin symmetry in a 2DEG, revealed by the abrupt enhancement of the exchange and correlation terms of the Coulomb interaction, as determined from the energies of the collective charge and spin excitations. Inelastic light scattering experiments and calculations within the time-dependent local spin-density approximation give strong evidence for the existence of a ferromagnetic ground state in the diluted regime.

Dynamics of the tuning process between singers

We present a dynamical model describing a predictable human behavior like the tuning process between singers. The purpose, inspired in physiological and behavioral grounds of human beings, is sensitive to all Fourier spectrum of each sound emitted and it contemplates an asymmetric coupling between individuals. We have recorded several tuning exercises and we have confronted the experimental evidence with the results of the model finding a very well agreement between calculated and experimental sonograms.
