Wave Propagation in a Strongly Nonlinear Locally Resonant Granular Crystal

In this work, we study the wave propagation in a recently proposed acoustic structure, the locally resonant granular crystal. This structure is composed of a one-dimensional granular crystal of hollow spherical particles in contact, containing linear resonators. The relevant model is presented and examined through a combination of analytical approximations (based on ODE and nonlinear map analysis) and of numerical results. The generic dynamics of the system involves a degradation of the well-known traveling pulse of the standard Hertzian chain of elastic beads. Nevertheless, the present system is richer, in that as the primary pulse decays, secondary ones emerge and eventually interfere with it creating modulated wavetrains. Remarkably, upon suitable choices of parameters, this interference "distills" a weakly nonlocal solitary wave (a "nanopteron"). This motivates the consideration of such nonlinear structures through a separate Fourier space technique, whose results suggest the existence of such entities not only with a single-side tail, but also with periodic tails on both ends. These tails are found to oscillate with the intrinsic oscillation frequency of the out-of-phase motion between the outer hollow bead and its internal linear attachment.

Many-Body Quantum Dynamics in the Decay of Bent Dark Solitons of Bose-Einstein Condensates

The beyond mean-field dynamics of a bent dark soliton embedded in a two-dimensional repulsively interacting Bose-Einstein condensate is explored. We examine the case of a single bent dark soliton comparing the mean-field dynamics to a correlated approach, the Multi-Configuration Time-Dependent Hartree method for Bosons. Dynamical snaking of this bent structure is observed, signaling the onset of fragmentation which becomes significant during the vortex nucleation. In contrast to the mean-field approximation "filling" of the vortex core is observed, leading in turn to the formation of filled-core vortices, instead of the mean-field vortex-antivortex pairs. The resulting smearing effect in the density is a rather generic feature, occurring when solitonic structures are exposed to quantum fluctuations. Here, we show that this filling owes its existence to the dynamical building of an antidark structure developed in the next-to-leading order orbital. We further demonstrate that the aforementioned beyond mean-field dynamics can be experimentally detected using the variance of single shot measurements. Additionally, a variety of excitations including vortices, oblique dark solitons, and open ring dark soliton-like structures building upon higher-lying orbitals is observed. We demonstrate that signatures of the higher-lying orbital excitations emerge in the total density, and can be clearly captured by inspecting the one-body coherence. In the latter context, the localization of one-body correlations exposes the existence of the multi-orbital vortex-antidark structure.

A Numerical Bifurcation Analysis of a Dryland Vegetation Model

The dryland vegetation model proposed by Rietkerk and collaborators has been explored from a bifurcation perspective in several previous studies. Our aim here is to explore in some detail the bifurcation phenomena present when the coefficients of the model are allowed to vary in a wide range of parameters. In addition to the primary bifurcation parameter, the precipitation, we allow the two infiltration rate parameters to vary as well. We find that these two parameters control the size and stability of nonhomogeneous biomass states in a way that can be predicted. Further, they control when certain homogeneous and inhomogeneous (in space) periodic (in time) orbits exist. Finally, we show that the model possesses infinitely many unphysical steady state branches. We then present a modification of the model which eliminates these unphysical solutions, and briefly explore this new model for a fixed set of parameters.

Vortex precession dynamics in general radially symmetric potential traps in two-dimensional atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider the motion of individual two-dimensional vortices in general radially symmetric potentials in Bose-Einstein condensates. We find that although in the special case of the parabolic trap there is a logarithmic correction in the dependence of the precession frequency $ω$ on the chemical potential $μ$, this is no longer true for a general potential $V(r) \propto r^p$. Our calculations suggest that for $p>2$, the precession frequency scales with $μ$ as $ω\sim μ^{-2/p}$. This theoretical prediction is corroborated by numerical computations, both at the level of spectral (Bogolyubov-de Gennes) stability analysis by identifying the relevant precession mode dependence on $μ$, but also through direct numerical computations of the vortex evolution in the large $μ$, so-called Thomas-Fermi, limit. Additionally, the dependence of the precession frequency on the radius of an initially displaced from the center vortex is examined and the corresponding predictions are tested against numerical results.

A Unifying Perspective: Solitary Traveling Waves As Discrete Breathers And Energy Criteria For Their Stability

In this work, we provide two complementary perspectives for the (spectral) stability of solitary traveling waves in Hamiltonian nonlinear dynamical lattices, of which the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam and the Toda lattice are prototypical examples. One is as an eigenvalue problem for a stationary solution in a co-traveling frame, while the other is as a periodic orbit modulo shifts. We connect the eigenvalues of the former with the Floquet multipliers of the latter and based on this formulation derive an energy-based spectral stability criterion. It states that a sufficient (but not necessary) condition for a change in the wave stability occurs when the functional dependence of the energy (Hamiltonian) $H$ of the model on the wave velocity $c$ changes its monotonicity. Moreover, near the critical velocity where the change of stability occurs, we provide explicit leading-order computation of the unstable eigenvalues, based on the second derivative of the Hamiltonian $H"(c_0)$ evaluated at the critical velocity $c_0$. We corroborate this conclusion with a series of analytically and numerically tractable examples and discuss its parallels with a recent energy-based criterion for the stability of discrete breathers.

Asymptotic Expansions and Solitons of the Camassa-Holm Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation

We study a deformation of the defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation, the defocusing Camassa- Holm NLS, hereafter referred to as CH-NLS equation. We use asymptotic multiscale expansion methods to reduce this model to a Boussinesq-like equation, which is then subsequently approximated by two Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations for left- and right-traveling waves. We use the soliton solution of the KdV equation to construct approximate solutions of the CH-NLS system. It is shown that these solutions may have the form of either dark or antidark solitons, namely dips or humps on top of a stable continuous-wave background. We also use numerical simulations to investigate the validity of the asymptotic solutions, study their evolution, and their head-on collisions. It is shown that small-amplitude dark and antidark solitons undergo quasi-elastic collisions.

On the characterization of vortex configurations in the steady rotating Bose--Einstein condensates

Motivated by experiments in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), we compare predictions of a system of ordinary differential equations (ODE) for dynamics of one and two individual vortices in the rotating BECs with those of the partial differential equation (PDE). In particular, we characterize orbitally stable vortex configurations in a symmetric harmonic trap due to a cubic repulsive interaction and the steady rotation. The ODE system is analyzed in details and the PDE model is approximated numerically. Good agreement between the two models is established in the semi-classical (Thomas-Fermi) limit that corresponds to the BECs at the large chemical potentials.

Solitary waves in the Nonlinear Dirac Equation

In the present work, we consider the existence, stability, and dynamics of solitary waves in the nonlinear Dirac equation. We start by introducing the Soler model of self-interacting spinors, and discuss its localized waveforms in one, two, and three spatial dimensions and the equations they satisfy. We present the associated explicit solutions in one dimension and numerically obtain their analogues in higher dimensions. The stability is subsequently discussed from a theoretical perspective and then complemented with numerical computations. Finally, the dynamics of the solutions is explored and compared to its non-relativistic analogue, which is the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation. A few special topics are also explored, including the discrete variant of the nonlinear Dirac equation and its solitary wave properties, as well as the PT-symmetric variant of the model.

Spatiotemporal algebraically localized waveforms for a nonlinear Schrödinger model with gain and loss

We consider the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of a nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) model incorporating linear and nonlinear gain/loss. First, we describe analytically the dynamical regimes (depending on the gain/loss strengths), for finite-time collapse, decay, and global existence of solutions in the dynamics. Then, for all the above parametric regimes, we use direct numerical simulations to study the dynamics corresponding to algebraically decaying initial data. We identify crucial differences between the dynamics of vanishing initial conditions, and those converging to a finite constant background: in the former (latter) case we find strong (weak) collapse or decay, when the gain/loss parameters are selected from the relevant regimes. One of our main results, is that in all the above regimes, non-vanishing initial data transition through spatiotemporal, algebraically decaying waveforms. While the system is nonintegrable, the evolution of these waveforms is reminiscent to the evolution of the Peregrine rogue wave of the integrable NLS limit. The parametric range of gain and loss for which this phenomenology persists is also touched upon.

Three-component soliton states in spinor $F=1$ Bose-Einstein condensates

Dilute-gas Bose-Einstein condensates are an exceptionally versatile testbed for the investigation of novel solitonic structures. While matter-wave solitons in one- and two-component systems have been the focus of intense research efforts, an extension to three components has never been attempted in experiments, to the best of our knowledge. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the existence of robust dark-bright-bright (DBB) and dark-dark-bright (DDB) solitons in a spinor $F=1$ condensate. We observe lifetimes on the order of hundreds of milliseconds for these structures. Our theoretical analysis, based on a multiscale expansion method, shows that small-amplitude solitons of these types obey universal long-short wave resonant interaction models, namely Yajima-Oikawa systems. Our experimental and analytical findings are corroborated by direct numerical simulations highlighting the persistence of, e.g., the DBB states, as well as their robust oscillations in the trap.

Direct measurement of superdiffusive and subdiffusive energy transport in disordered granular chains

The study of energy transport properties in heterogeneous materials has attracted scientific interest for more than a century, and it continues to offer fundamental and rich questions. One of the unanswered challenges is to extend Anderson theory for uncorrelated and fully disordered lattices in condensed-matter systems to physical settings in which additional effects compete with disorder. Specifically, the effect of strong nonlinearity has been largely unexplored experimentally, partly due to the paucity of testbeds that can combine the effect of disorder and nonlinearity in a controllable manner. Here we present the first systematic experimental study of energy transport and localization properties in simultaneously disordered and nonlinear granular crystals. We demonstrate experimentally that disorder and nonlinearity --- which are known from decades of studies to individually favor energy localization --- can in some sense "cancel each other out", resulting in the destruction of wave localization. We also report that the combined effect of disorder and nonlinearity can enable the manipulation of energy transport speed in granular crystals from subdiffusive to superdiffusive ranges.

Dark-Bright Soliton Dynamics Beyond the Mean-Field Approximation

The dynamics of dark-bright solitons beyond the mean-field approximation is investigated. We first examine the case of a single dark-bright soliton and its oscillations within a parabolic trap. Subsequently, we move to the setting of collisions, comparing the mean-field approximation to that involving multiple orbitals in both the dark and the bright component. Fragmentation is present and significantly affects the dynamics, especially in the case of slower solitons and in that of lower atom numbers. It is shown that the presence of fragmentation allows for bipartite entanglement between the distinguishable species. Most importantly the interplay between fragmentation and entanglement leads to the splitting of each of the parent mean-field dark-bright solitons, placed off-center within the parabolic trap, into a fast and a slow daughter solitary wave. The latter process is in direct contrast to the predictions of the mean-field approximation. A variety of excitations including dark-bright solitons in multiple (concurrently populated) orbitals is observed. Dark-antidark states and domain-wall-bright soliton complexes can also be observed to arise spontaneously in the beyond mean-field dynamics.

Floquet Analysis of Kuznetsov--Ma breathers: A Path Towards Spectral Stability of Rogue Waves

In the present work, we aim at taking a step towards the spectral stability analysis of Peregrine solitons, i.e., wave structures that are used to emulate extreme wave events. Given the space-time localized nature of Peregrine solitons, this is a priori a non-trivial task. Our main tool in this effort will be the study of the spectral stability of the periodic generalization of the Peregrine soliton in the evolution variable, namely the Kuznetsov--Ma breather. Given the periodic structure of the latter, we compute the corresponding Floquet multipliers, and examine them in the limit where the period of the orbit tends to infinity. This way, we extrapolate towards the stability of the limiting structure, namely the Peregrine soliton. We find that multiple unstable modes of the background are enhanced, yet no additional unstable eigenmodes arise as the Peregrine limit is approached. We explore the instability evolution also in direct numerical simulations.

An Adiabatic Invariant Approach to Transverse Instability: Landau Dynamics of Soliton Filaments

Assume a lower-dimensional solitonic structure embedded in a higher dimensional space, e.g., a 1D dark soliton embedded in 2D space, a ring dark soliton in 2D space, a spherical shell soliton in 3D space etc. By extending the Landau dynamics approach [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 93}, 240403 (2004)], we show that it is possible to capture the transverse dynamical modes (the "Kelvin modes") of the undulation of this "soliton filament" within the higher dimensional space. These are the transverse stability/instability modes and are the ones potentially responsible for the breakup of the soliton into structures such as vortices, vortex rings etc. We present the theory and case examples in 2D and 3D, corroborating the results by numerical stability and dynamical computations.

Discrete BPS Skyrmions

A discrete analogue of the extended Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfeld (BPS) Skyrme model that admits time-dependent solutions is presented. Using the spacing h of adjacent lattice nodes as a parameter, we identify the spatial profile of the solution and the continuation of the relevant branch of solutions over the lattice spacing for different values of the potential (free) parameter α. In particular, we explore the dynamics and stability of the obtained solutions, finding that, while they generally seem to be prone to instabilities, for suitable values of the lattice spacing and for sufficiently large value of α, they may be long-lived in direct numerical simulations.

Stability of single and multiple matter-wave dark solitons in collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates

We examine the spectral properties of single and multiple matter-wave dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates confined in parabolic traps, where the scattering length is periodically modulated. In addition to the large-density limit picture previously established for homogeneous nonlinearities, we explore a perturbative analysis in the vicinity of the linear limit, which provides good agreement with the observed spectral modes. Between these two analytically tractable limits, we use numerical computations to fill in the relevant intermediate regime. We find that the scattering length modulation can cause a variety of features absent for homogeneous nonlinearities. Among them, we note the potential oscillatory instability even of the single dark soliton, the potential absence of instabilities in the immediate vicinity of the linear limit for two dark solitons, and the existence of an exponential instability associated with the in-phase motion of three dark solitons.

Stability and dynamics of dark-bright soliton bound states away from the integrable limit

The existence, stability, and dynamics of bound pairs of symbiotic matter waves in the form of dark-bright soliton pairs in two-component mixtures of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates is investigated. Motivated by the tunability of the atomic interactions in recent experiments, we explore in detail the impact that changes in the interaction strengths have on these bound pairs by considering significant deviations from the Manakov (integrable) limit. It is found that dark-bright soliton pairs exist as stable configurations in a wide parametric window spanning both the miscible and the immiscible regime of interactions. Outside this parameter interval two unstable regions are identified and are associated with a supercritical and a subcritical pitchfork bifurcation, respectively. Dynamical manifestation of these instabilities gives rise to a redistribution of the bright density between the dark solitons, and also to symmetry-broken stationary states that are mass imbalanced (asymmetric) with respect to their bright soliton counterpart. The long-time dynamics of both the stable and the unstable balanced and imbalanced dark-bright soliton pairs is analyzed.

Direct observation of chimera-like states in a ring of coupled electronic self-oscillators

Chimera states are characterized by the symmetry-breaking coexistence of synchronized and incoherent groups of oscillators in certain chains of identical oscillators. We report on the direct experimental observation of states reminiscent of such chimeras within a ring of coupled electronic (Wien-bridge) oscillators, and compare these to numerical simulations of a theoretically derived model. Following up on earlier work characterizing the pairwise interaction of Wien-bridge oscillators by Kuramoto-Sakaguchi phase dynamics, we develop a lattice model for a chain thereof, featuring an {\it exponentially decaying} spatial kernel. We find that for certain values of the Sakaguchi parameter $α$, chimera-like states involving the coexistence of two clearly-separated regions of distinct dynamical behavior can establish themselves in the ring lattice, characterized by both traveling and stationary coexistence domains of synchronization.
