Solitons in Triangular and Honeycomb Dynamical Lattices with the Cubic Nonlinearity

We study the existence and stability of localized states in the discrete nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation (DNLS) on two-dimensional non-square lattices. The model includes both the nearest-neighbor and long-range interactions. For the fundamental strongly localized soliton, the results depend on the coordination number, i.e., on the particular type of the lattice. The long-range interactions additionally destabilize the discrete soliton, or make it more stable, if the sign of the interaction is, respectively, the same as or opposite to the sign of the short-range interaction. We also explore more complicated solutions, such as twisted localized modes (TLM's) and solutions carrying multiple topological charge (vortices) that are specific to the triangular and honeycomb lattices. In the cases when such vortices are unstable, direct simulations demonstrate that they turn into zero-vorticity fundamental solitons.

Wannier functions analysis of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a periodic potential

In the present Letter we use the Wannier function basis to construct lattice approximations of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a periodic potential. We show that the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a periodic potential is equivalent to a vector lattice with long-range interactions. For the case-example of the cosine potential we study the validity of the so-called tight-binding approximation i.e., the approximation when nearest neighbor interactions are dominant. The results are relevant to Bose-Einstein condensate theory as well as to other physical systems like, for example, electromagnetic wave propagation in nonlinear photonic crystals.

Focusing Revisited: an MN-dynamics Approach

The nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation is a ubiquitous example of an envelope wave equation for conservative, dispersive systems. We revisit here the problem of self-similar focusing of waves in the case of the focusing NLS equation through the prism of a dynamic renormalization technique (MN dynamics) that factors out self-similarity and yields a bifurcation view of the onset of focusing. As a result, identifying the focusing self-similar solution becomes a steady state problem. The discretized steady states are subsequently obtained and their linear stability is numerically examined. The calculations are performed in the setting of variable index of refraction, in which the onset of focusing appears as a supercritical bifurcation of a novel type of mixed Hamiltonian-dissipative dynamical system (reminiscent, to some extent, of a pitchfork bifurcation).

Breathers on a Background: Periodic and Quasiperiodic Solutions of Extended Discrete Nonlinear Wave Systems

In this paper we investigate the emergence of time-periodic and and time-quasiperiodic (sometimes infinitely long lived and sometimes very long lived or metastable) solutions of discrete nonlinear wave equations: discrete sine Gordon, discrete $ϕ^4$ and discrete nonlinear Schrödinger. The solutions we consider are periodic oscillations on a kink or standing wave breather background. The origin of these oscillations is the presence of internal modes, associated with the static ground state. Some of these modes are associated with the breaking of translational invariance, in going from a spatially continuous to a spatially discrete system. Others are associated with discrete modes which bifurcate from the continuous spectrum. It is also possible that such modes exist in the continuum limit and persist in the discrete case. The regimes of existence, stability and metastability of states as the lattice spacing is varied are investigated analytically and numerically. A consequence of our analysis is a class of spatially localized, time quasiperiodic solutions of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We demonstrate, however, that this class of quasiperiodic solution is rather special and that its natural generalizations yield only metastable quasiperiodic solutions.

Parametric Quantum Resonances for Bose-Einstein Condensates

We generalize recent work on parametric resonances for nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) type equations to the case of three dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates at zero temperatures. We show the possibility of such resonances in the three-dimensional case, using a moment method and numerical simulations.

Dynamics of Lattice Kinks

In this paper we consider two models of soliton dynamics (the sine Gordon and the ϕ^4 equations) on a 1-dimensional lattice. We are interested in particular in the behavior of their kink-like solutions inside the Peierls- Nabarro barrier and its variation as a function of the discreteness parameter. We find explicitly the asymptotic states of the system for any value of the discreteness parameter and the rates of decay of the initial data to these asymptotic states. We show that genuinely periodic solutions are possible and we identify the regimes of the discreteness parameter for which they are expected to persist. We also prove that quasiperiodic solutions cannot exist. Our results are verified by numerical simulations.

Statistical mechanics of a nonlinear discrete system

Statistical mechanics of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation is studied by means of analytical and numerical techniques. The lower bound of the Hamiltonian permits the construction of standard Gibbsian equilibrium measures for positive temperatures. Beyond the line of $T=\infty$, we identify a phase transition, through a discontinuity in the partition function. The phase transition is demonstrated to manifest itself in the creation of breather-like localized excitations. Interrelation between the statistical mechanics and the nonlinear dynamics of the system is explored numerically in both regimes.
