Jacobi's Last Multiplier and Lagrangians for Multidimensional Systems

We demonstrate that the formalism for the calculation of the Jacobi last multiplier for a one-degree-of-freedom system extends naturally to systems of more than one degree of freedom thereby extending results of Whittaker dating from more than a century ago and Rao ({\it Proc Ben Math Soc} {\bf 2} (1940) 53-59) dating from almost seventy years ago. We illustrate the theory with an application taken from the theory of coupled oscillators. We indicate how many Lagrangians can be obtained for such a system.

Lagrangians Galore

Searching for a Lagrangian may seem either a trivial endeavour or an impossible task. In this paper we show that the Jacobi last multiplier associated with the Lie symmetries admitted by simple models of classical mechanics produces (too?) many Lagrangians in a simple way. We exemplify the method by such a classic as the simple harmonic oscillator, the harmonic oscillator in disguise [H Goldstein, {\it Classical Mechanics}, 2nd edition (Addison-Wesley, Reading, 1980)] and the damped harmonic oscillator. This is the first paper in a series dedicated to this subject.

On Differential Sequences

We introduce the notion of Differential Sequences of ordinary differential equations. This is motivated by related studies based on evolution partial differential equations. We discuss the Riccati Sequence in terms of symmetry analysis, singularity analysis and identification of the complete symmetry group for each member of the Sequence. The singularity analysis reveals considerable structure for the values of the coefficients of the leading-order terms and resonances of the different principal branches. Full proofs of the symmetry properties are performed for differential equations defined by their recursion properties and not given in explicit form.

Much ado about 248

In this note we present three representations of a 248-dimensional Lie algebra, namely the algebra of Lie point symmetries admitted by a system of five trivial ordinary differential equations each of order forty-four, that admitted by a system of seven trivial ordinary differential equations each of order twenty-eight and that admitted by one trivial ordinary differential equation of order two hundred and forty-four.

Symmetry Properties of Autonomous Integrating Factors

We study the symmetry properties of autonomous integrating factors from an algebraic point of view. The symmetries are delineated for the resulting integrals treated as equations and symmetries of the integrals treated as functions or configurational invariants. The succession of terms (pattern) is noted. The general pattern for the solution symmetries for equations in the simplest form of maximal order is given and the properties of the associated integrals resulting from this analysis are given.

Ermakov's Superintegrable Toy and Nonlocal Symmetries

We investigate the symmetry properties of a pair of Ermakov equations. The system is superintegrable and yet possesses only three Lie point symmetries with the algebra sl(2,R). The number of point symmetries is insufficient and the algebra unsuitable for the complete specification of the system. We use the method of reduction of order to reduce the nonlinear fourth-order system to a third-order system comprising a linear second-order equation and a conservation law. We obtain the representation of the complete symmetry group from this system. Four of the required symmetries are nonlocal and the algebra is the direct sum of a one-dimensional Abelian algebra with the semidirect sum of a two-dimensional solvable algebra with a two-dimensional Abelian algebra. The problem illustrates the difficulties which can arise in very elementary systems. Our treatment demonstrates the existence of possible routes to overcome these problems in a systematic fashion.

Generalisations of the Laplace-Runge-Lenz vector

The characteristic feature of the Kepler Problem is the existence of the so-called Laplace--Runge--Lenz vector which enables a very simple discussion of the properties of the orbit for the problem. It is found that there are many classes of problems, some closely related to the Kepler Problem and others somewhat remote, which share the possession of a conserved vector which plays a significant rôle in the analysis of these problems.

Symmetry, singularities and integrability in complex dynamics V: Complete symmetry groups of certain relativistic spherically symmetric systems

We show that the concept of complete symmetry group introduced by Krause (J. Math. Phys.35 (1994) 5734-5748) in the context of the Newtonian Kepler problem has wider applicability, extending to the relativistic context of the Einstein equations describing spherically symmetric bodies with certain conformal Killing symmetries. We also provide a simple demonstration of the nonuniqueness of the complete symmetry group.

The harmony in the Kepler and related problems

The technique of reduction of order developed by Nucci ({\it J Math Phys} {\bf 37} (1996) 1772-1775) is used to produce nonlocal symmetries additional to those reported by Krause ({\it J Math Phys} {\bf 35} (1994) 5734-5748) in his study of the complete symmetry group of the Kepler Problem. The technique is shown to be applicable to related problems containing a drag term which have been used to model the motion of low altitude satellites in the Earth's atmosphere and further generalisations. A consequence of the application of this technique is the demonstration of the group theoretical relationship between the simple harmonic oscillator and the Kepler and related problems.

Adiabatic invariants and Mixmaster catastrophes

We present a rigorous analysis of the role and uses of the adiabatic invariant in the Mixmaster dynamical system. We propose a new invariant for the global dynamics which in some respects has an improved behaviour over the commonly used one. We illustrate its behaviour in a number of numerical results. We also present a new formulation of the dynamics via Catastrophe Theory. We find that the change from one era to the next corresponds to a fold catastrophe, during the Kasner shifts the potential is an Implicit Function Form whereas, as the anisotropy dissipates, the Mixmaster potential must become a Morse 0--saddle. We compare and contrast our results to many known works on the Mixmaster problem and indicate how extensions could be achieved. Further exploitation of this formulation may lead to a clearer understanding of the global Mixmaster dynamics.

Characterisation of orthogonal perfect fluid cosmological spacetimes

We consider the general orthogonal metric separable in space and time variables in comoving coordinates. We then characterise perfect fluid models admitted by such a metric. It turns out that the homogeneous models can only be either FLRW or Bianchi I while the inhomogeneous ones can only admit $G_2 $ (two mutually as well as hypersurface orthogonal spacelike Killing vectors) isometry. The latter can possess singularities of various kinds or none. The non-singular family is however unique and cylindrically symmetric.
