Commutatively Deformed General Relativity: Foundations, Cosmology, and Experimental Tests

An integral kernel representation for the commutative $\star$-product on curved classical spacetime is introduced. Its convergence conditions and relationship to a Drin'feld differential twist are established. A $\star$-Einstein field equation can be obtained, provided the matter-based twist's vector generators are fixed to self-consistent values during the variation in order to maintain $\star$-associativity. Variations not of this type are non-viable as classical field theories. $\star$-Gauge theory on such a spacetime can be developed using $\star$-Ehresmann connections. While the theory preserves Lorentz invariance and background independence, the standard ADM $3+1$ decomposition of 4-diffs in general relativity breaks down, leading to different $\star$-constraints. No photon or graviton ghosts are found on $\star$-Minkowski spacetime. $\star$-Friedmann equations are derived and solved for $\star$-FLRW cosmologies. Big Bang Nucleosynthesis restricts expressions for the twist generators. Allowed generators can be constructed which account for dark matter as arising from a twist producing non-standard model matter field. The theory also provides a robust qualitative explanation for the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the observable Universe. Particle exchange quantum statistics encounters \emph{thresholded} modifications due to violations of the cluster decomposition principle on the nonlocality length scale $\sim10^{3-5} \,L_P$. Precision Hughes-Drever measurements of spacetime anisotropy appear as the most promising experimental route to test deformed general relativity.

Commutative deformations of general relativity: nonlocality, causality, and dark matter

Hopf algebra methods are applied to study Drinfeld twists of (3+1)-diffeomorphisms and deformed general relativity on \emph{commutative} manifolds. A classical nonlocality length scale is produced above which microcausality emerges. Matter fields are utilized to generate self-consistent Abelian Drinfeld twists in a background independent manner and their continuous and discrete symmetries are examined. There is negligible experimental effect on the standard model of particles. While baryonic twist producing matter would begin to behave acausally for rest masses above $\sim1-10$ TeV, other possibilities are viable dark matter candidates or a right handed neutrino. First order deformed Maxwell equations are derived and yield immeasurably small cosmological dispersion and produce a propagation horizon only for photons at or above Planck energies. This model incorporates dark matter without any appeal to extra dimensions, supersymmetry, strings, grand unified theories, mirror worlds, or modifications of Newtonian dynamics.

Non-Ultralocality and Causality in the Relational Framework of Canonical Quantum Gravity

The relational framework of canonical quantum gravity with non-ultralocal constraints is explored. After demonstrating the absence of anomalies, a spatially discretized version of the relational framework is introduced. This allows the application of Lieb-Robinson bounds to on-shell monotonic gauge-flow when there is a continuous external "time" parameter. An explicit Lieb-Robinson bound is derived for the differential on-shell evolution of the operator norm of the commutator of discretized Dirac observables, demonstrating how a local light cone-like causal structure emerges. Ultra-local constraints do not permit such a structure to arise via Lieb-Robinson bounds. Gauge and (3+1)-diff invariance of the light-cone is discussed along with the issues of quantum fluctuations, the nature of the non-localities, the spatial continuum limit, and possible links to non-commutative geometry.
