Star Wreck

Electroweak models with low-energy supersymmetry breaking predict the existence of stable non-topological solitons, Q-balls, that can be produced in the early universe. The relic Q-balls can accumulate inside a neutron star and gradually absorb the baryons into the scalar condensate. This causes a slow reduction in the mass of the star. When the mass reaches a critical value, the neutron star becomes unstable and explodes. The cataclysmic destruction of the distant neutron stars may be the origin of the gamma-ray bursts.

Periodic Instanton Bifurcations and Thermal Transition Rate

It is shown that periodic instanton solutions may have bifurcations which qualitatively change the behaviour of the finite temperature transition rate. These bifurcations are studied numerically in a quantum mechanical model and in the massive two-dimensional sigma model with the Skyrme term. General rules which determine the behaviour of periodic instantons near bifurcations are derived and applied to the Electroweak Theory.

False Vacuum Decay Induced by Particle Collisions

The semiclassical formalism for numerical calculation of the rate of tunneling transitions induced by N particles with total energy E of order or higher than the height of the barrier is developed. The formalism is applied to the induced false vacuum decay in the massive four-dimensional $-λϕ^4$ model. The decay rate, as a function of E and N, is calculated numerically in the range $0.4\lsim E/E_{sph}\lsim 3.5$ and $0.25 \lsim N/N_{sph}\lsim 1.0$, where $E_{sph}$ and $N_{sph}$ are the energy and the number of particles in the analog of the sphaleron configuration. The results imply that the ``two-particle'' cross section of the false vacuum decay is exponentially suppressed at least up to energies of order $10 E_{sph}$. At $E\sim E_{sph}$, this exponential suppression is estimated as about 80% of the zero energy suppression.

What Becomes of Vortices in Theories with Flat Directions

In many theories with flat directions of scalar potential, static vortex solutions do not exist for a generic choice of vacuum. In two Euclidean dimensions, we find their substitutes --- constrained instantons consisting of compact core formed by Abrikosov--Nielsen--Olesen vortex and long-ranged cloud of modulus field. In (3+1) dimensions, an initial compact configuration of string topology evolves in such a way that at every point in space the modulus relaxes, in a universal manner, to one and the same value characteristic to the theory.

Numerical Study of Induced False Vacuum Decay at High Energies

We calculate numerically the probability $\exp[ {1\overλ} F(E/E_{sph},N/N_{sph})]$ of the false vacuum decay in the massive four-dimensional $-λϕ^4$ model from multiparticle initial states with fixed number of particles $N$ and energy $E$ greater than the height of the barrier $E_{sph}$. We find that at $E\lsim 3E_{sph}$ and $N\lsim 0.4N_{sph}$ the decay is classically forbidden and thus is exponentially suppressed. We argue that the classically forbidden region extends at small $N$ at least up to $E\sim 10 E_{sph}$ and, most likely, to all energies. Our data suggest that the false vacuum decay induced by two-particle collisions is exponentially suppressed at all energies.

Examples of Semiclassical Instanton-Like Scattering: Massless $ϕ^4$ and SU(2) Gauge Theories

Two-parameter sets of solutions to the classical field equations in the massless $ϕ^4$ model and SU(2) gauge theory are found, each solution presumably describing a multi-particle instanton-like transition at high energy. In the limit of small number of initial particles, the probability of the transition is suppressed by $\exp(-2S_0)$, where $S_0$ is the instanton action.

An Example of Semiclassical Instanton-Like Scattering: (1+1) Dimensional Sigma Model

A solution to the classical field equations in the massless (1+1)-dimensional O(3) sigma model is found, which describes a multi-particle instanton-like transition at high energy. In the limit of small number of initial particles, the number of final particles is shown to be also small, and the probability of the transition is suppressed by $\exp(-2S_0)$, where $S_0$ is the instanton action. This solution, however, does not correspond to the maximum transition probability among all states with given number of incoming particles and energy. Unless the limit $g^2 n_{initial}\to0$ is exponentially sensitive to the structure of the initial state, our results imply that well above the sphaleron energy, the instanton-induced cross section becomes again suppressed by the instanton exponent, and the number of final paricles is again small.
