Gluino Decays in Split Supersymmetry

We compute the gluino lifetime and branching ratios in Split Supersymmetry. Using an effective-theory approach, we resum the large logarithmic corrections controlled by the strong gauge coupling and the top Yukawa coupling. We find that the resummation of the radiative corrections has a sizeable numerical impact on the gluino decay width and branching ratios. Finally, we discuss the gluino decays into gravitino, relevant in models with direct mediation of supersymmetry breaking.

Perturbative corrections to semileptonic b decay distributions

We compute O(alpha_s) and O(alpha_s^n beta_0^{n-1}) (BLM) corrections to the five structure functions relevant for b->q l nu decays and apply the results to the moments of a few distributions of phenomenological importance. We present compact analytic one-loop formulae for the structure functions, with proper subtraction of the soft divergence.

The CKM Matrix and the Unitarity Triangle

This report contains the results of the Workshop on the CKM Unitarity Triangle, held at CERN on 13-16 February 2002 to study the determination of the CKM matrix from the available data of K, D, and B physics. This is a coherent document with chapters covering the determination of CKM elements from tree level decays and K and B meson mixing and the global fits of the unitarity triangle parameters. The impact of future measurements is also discussed.

Heavy Quark Parameters and Vcb from Spectral Moments in Semileptonic B Decays

We extract the heavy quark masses and non-perturbative parameters from the Delphi preliminary measurements of the first three moments of the charged lepton energy and hadronic mass distributions in semileptonic B decays, using a multi-parameter fit. We adopt two formalisms, one of which does not rely on a 1/mc expansion and makes use of running quark masses. The data are consistent and the level of accuracy of the experimental inputs largely determines the present sensitivity. The results allow to improve on the uncertainty in the extraction of Vcb.

Old and new physics interpretations of the NuTeV anomaly

We discuss whether the NuTeV anomaly can be explained, compatibly with all other data, by QCD effects (maybe, if the strange sea is asymmetric, or there is a tiny violation of isospin), new physics in propagators or couplings of the vector bosons (not really), loops of supersymmetric particles (no), dimension six operators (yes, for one specific SU(2)-invariant operator), leptoquarks (not in a minimal way), extra U(1) gauge bosons (maybe: an unmixed Z' coupled to B-3L_mu also increases the muon g-2 by about 10^{-9} and gives a `burst' to cosmic rays above the GZK cutoff).

Indication for Light Sneutrinos and Gauginos from Precision Electroweak Data

The present Standard Model fit of precision data has a low confidence level, and is characterized by a few inconsistencies. We look for supersymmetric effects that could improve the agreement among the electroweak precision measurements and with the direct lower bound on the Higgs mass. We find that this is the case particularly if the 3.6 sigma discrepancy between sin^2 theta_eff from leptonic and hadronic asymmetries is finally settled more on the side of the leptonic ones. After the inclusion of all experimental constraints, our analysis selects light sneutrinos, with masses in the range 55-80 GeV, and charged sleptons with masses just above their experimental limit, possibly with additional effects from light gauginos. The phenomenological implications of this scenario are discussed.

Physics at the front-end of a neutrino factory: a quantitative appraisal

We present a quantitative appraisal of the physics potential for neutrino experiments at the front-end of a muon storage ring. We estimate the forseeable accuracy in the determination of several interesting observables, and explore the consequences of these measurements. We discuss the extraction of individual quark and antiquark densities from polarized and unpolarized deep-inelastic scattering. In particular we study the implications for the undertanding of the nucleon spin structure. We assess the determination of alpha_s from scaling violation of structure functions, and from sum rules, and the determination of sin^2(theta_W) from elastic nu-e and deep-inelastic nu-p scattering. We then consider the production of charmed hadrons, and the measurement of their absolute branching ratios. We study the polarization of Lambda baryons produced in the current and target fragmentation regions. Finally, we discuss the sensitivity to physics beyond the Standard Model.

B -> X_s gamma in supersymmetry: large contributions beyond the leading order

We discuss possible large contributions to B -> X_s gamma, which can occur at the next-to-leading order in supersymmetric models. They can originate from terms enhanced by tan(beta) factors, when the ratio between the two Higgs vacuum expectation values is large, or by logarithm of M_{susy}/M_W, when the supersymmetric particles are considerably heavier than the W boson. We give compact formulae which include all potentially large higher-order contributions. We find that tan(beta) terms at the next-to-leading order do not only appear from the Hall-Rattazzi-Sarid effect (the modified relation between the bottom mass and Yukawa coupling), but also from an analogous effect in the top-quark Yukawa coupling. Finally, we show how next-to-leading order corrections, in the large tan(beta) region, can significantly reduce the limit on the charged-Higgs mass, even if supersymmetric particles are very heavy.

Next-to-Leading QCD Corrections to B\to X_s γin Supersymmetry

We compute the QCD next-to-leading order matching conditions of the (chromo)-magnetic operators relevant for B\to X_s γin supersymmetric models with minimal flavour violation. The calculation is performed under the assumption that the charginos and one stop are lighter than all other squarks and the gluino. In the parameter region where a light charged Higgs boson is consistent with measurements of BR(B\to X_s γ), we find sizeable corrections to the Wilson coefficients. As a consequence, there is a significant reduction of the stop-chargino mass region where the supersymmetric contribution has a large destructive interference with the charged-Higgs boson contribution.

epsilon'/epsilon and Rare K and B Decays in the MSSM

We analyze the CP violating ratio epsilon'/epsilon and rare K and B decays in the MSSM with minimal flavour and CP violation, including NLO QCD corrections and imposing constraints on the supersymmetric parameters coming from epsilon, B_{d,s}^0-\bar B_{d,s}^0 mixings, B to X_s gamma, Delta rho in the electroweak precision studies and from the lower bound on the neutral Higgs mass. We provide a compendium of phenomenologically relevant formulae in the MSSM. Denoting by T(Q) the MSSM prediction for a given quantity normalized to the Standard Model result we find the ranges: 0.53 < T(epsilon'/epsilon) < 1.07, 0.65 < T(K^+ to pi^+ nu nubar) < 1.02, 0.41 < T(K_L to pi^0 nu nubar) < 1.03, 0.48 < T(K_L to pi^0 e^+ e^-) < 1.10, 0.73 < T(B to X_s nu nubar) < 1.34 and 0.68 < T(B_s to mu^+ mu^-) < 1.53. We point out that these ranges will be considerably reduced when the lower bounds on the neutral Higgs mass and tan beta improve. Some contour plots illustrate the dependences of the quantities above on the relevant supersymmetric parameters. As a byproduct of this work we update our previous analysis of epsilon'/epsilon in the SM and find in NDR epsilon'/epsilon = (9.2^{+6.8}_{-4.0}), a value 15 % higher than in our 1999 analysis.

Universal Unitarity Triangle and Physics Beyond the Standard Model

We make the simple observation that there exists a universal unitarity triangle for all models, like the SM, the Two Higgs Doublet Models I and II and the MSSM with minimal flavour violation, that do not have any new operators beyond those present in the SM and in which all flavour changing transitions are governed by the CKM matrix with no new phases beyond the CKM phase. This universal triangle can be determined in the near future from the ratio (Delta M)_d/(Delta M)_s and sin(2 beta) measured first through the CP asymmetry in B_d^0 to psi K_S and later in K to pi nu nubar decays. Also suitable ratios of the branching ratios for B to X_{d,s} nu nubar and B_{d,s} to mu^+ mu^- and the angle gamma measured by means of CP asymmetries in B decays can be used for this determination. Comparison of this universal triangle with the non-universal triangles extracted in each model using epsilon, (Delta M)_d and various branching ratios for rare decays will allow to find out in a transparent manner which of these models, if any, is singled out by experiment. A virtue of the universal triangle is that it allows to separate the determination of the CKM parameters from the determination of new parameters present in the extensions of the SM considered here.

Electroweak Penguin Contributions to Non-Leptonic Delta F = 1 Decays at NNLO

We calculate the O(alpha_s) corrections to the Z^0-penguin and electroweak box diagrams relevant for non-leptonic Delta F = 1 decays with F = S, B. This calculation provides the complete O(alpha_w alpha_s) and O(alpha_w alpha_s sin^2 theta_w m_t^2) corrections (alpha_w = alpha/sin^2 theta_w) to the Wilson coefficients of the electroweak penguin four quark operators relevant for non-leptonic K- and B-decays. We argue that this is the dominant part of the next-next-to-leading (NNLO) contributions to these coefficients. Our results allow to reduce considerably the uncertainty due to the definition of the top quark mass present in the existing NLO calculations of non-leptonic decays. The NNLO corrections to the coefficient of the color singlet (V-A)x(V-A) electroweak penguin operator Q_9 relevant for B-decays are generally moderate, amount to a few percent for the choice m_t(mu_t = m_t) and depend only weakly on the renormalization scheme. Larger NNLO corrections with substantial scheme dependence are found for the coefficients of the remaining electroweak penguin operators Q_7, Q_8 and Q_10. In particular, the strong scheme dependence of the NNLO corrections to C_8 allows to reduce considerably the scheme dependence of C_8 (Q_8)_2 relevant for the ratio epsilon'/epsilon.

Two-loop heavy top corrections to the Z boson partial widths

We present the evaluation of the two-loop O(g^4 mt^2) effects in the partial widths of the Z boson in the MSbar scheme and in two different implementations of the on-shell scheme. We observe a clear reduction of the scheme dependence of the predictions. The renormalization procedure and the Heavy Top Expansion employed in the O(g^4 mt^2) calculations are illustrated in some detail and intermediate results are provided. We discuss the implication of our results on the constraints for the Higgs mass making use of simple interpolating formulas. We find that precision data give mh < 285 GeV at 95% C.L. taking into account the theory uncertainty. Including also the information from direct search experiments we obtain a 95% upper bound mh < 345 GeV.

Fermion Mixing Renormalization and Gauge Invariance

We study the renormalization of the fermion mixing matrix in the Standard Model and derive the constraints that must be satisfied to respect gauge invariance to all orders. We demonstrate that the prescription based on the {\it on-shell} renormalization conditions is not consistent with the Ward-Takahashi Identities and leads to gauge dependent physical amplitudes. A simple scheme is proposed that satisfies all theoretical requirements and is very convenient for practical calculations.

Test of the Heavy Top Expansion in the Evaluation of MW and sin^2theta_eff

In order to test the accuracy of the Heavy Top-mass Expansion (HTE) employed in recent two-loop calculations of MW and sin^2theta_eff, we consider their contributions to subtracted quantities of the form MW_sub=MW(mh)-MW(mh0), where mh0 is a reference point. The results are compared with those obtained by a precise numerical evaluation of all the two-loop contributions involving both the Higgs boson and a fermion loop. For the choice mh0=65 GeV, and over the large range 65 GeV <mh< 1TeV, we find very small differences between the precise and HTE calculations, amounting to |deltaMW|<0.8 MeV and |delta s^2_eff|<1.2 x 10^-5. Although corrections involving light fermions are necessary for the consistency and test of existent calculations, we also discuss the separate contributions from the top-bottom isodoublet. In this case, the differences are larger, although still small, namely |deltaMW|<1.9 MeV and |delta s^2_eff|< 4.5 x 10^-5.

Electroweak effects in the $B^0-{\bar B}^0$ mixing

We compute analytically the complete electroweak two-loop corrections to the $B^0-{\bar B}^0$ mixing. These corrections fix the normalization of the electroweak coupling employed in the extraction of $|V_{td}|$ and reduce the theoretical uncertainty due to higher order electroweak effects from several percent to a few parts in a thousand. If the LO result is expressed in terms of $G_μ$ or of the $\bar{MS}$ coupling $\hat{g}(M_Z)$, the two-loop corrections are $O(1%)$, the exact value depending on the mass of the Higgs boson. We discuss in detail the renormalization procedure and the scheme and scale dependence, and provide practical formulas for the numerical implementation of our results. We also consider the heavy top mass expansion and show that in the case at hand it converges very slowly.

Next-to-Leading QCD Corrections to B -> X_s gamma: Standard Model and Two-Higgs Doublet Model

We present the QCD corrections to the matching conditions of the Delta B =1 magnetic and chromo-magnetic operators in the Standard Model and in two-Higgs doublet models. We use an off-shell matching procedure which allows us to perform the computation using Taylor series in the external momenta, instead of asymptotic expansions. In the Standard Model case, we confirm previous results derived on-shell and we obtain BR(B -> X_s gamma)=(3.62\pm 0.33) 10^{-4}. In the case of the usual two-Higgs doublet model, we show that going from the leading to the next-to-leading order result improves the CLEO bound on the charged-Higgs mass from 260 GeV to 380 GeV. This limit is very sensitive to the definition of errors and we carefully discuss the theoretical uncertainties. Finally, in the case of the two-Higgs doublet model in which both up- and down-type quarks couple to the same Higgs field, the theoretical prediction for BR(B -> X_s gamma) can be reduced by at most 20% with respect to the Standard Model value.

Two-Loop Electroweak Heavy-Fermion Corrections to Higgs-Boson Production and Decay

The dominant electroweak corrections to the production cross sections and partial decay widths of a light Standard-Model Higgs boson, with mass M_H << 2m_t, are due to top-quark loops. By means of a low-energy theorem, we study at the two-loop level the leading shifts in the Higgs-boson couplings to pairs of light fermions and gauge bosons induced by a sequential isodoublet of high-mass fermions. For tree-level and loop-induced Higgs-boson couplings, these corrections are of relative orders O(G_mu^2 m_F^4) and O(G_mu m_F^2), respectively, where m_F represents a generic heavy-fermion mass, with m_F >> M_W, M_H. Except for the Hbb-bar coupling, all results carry over to the case of the top-quark-induced corrections. We discuss possible phenomenological consequences of our results.
