Probing the quantum phase transition around $N\approx60$ via mass measurements of technetium isotopes

The masses of neutron-rich $^{104-106}$Tc isotopes were measured using the JYFLTRAP double Penning trap and found to deviate from the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2020 by $-79(25)$, $40(12)$ and $94(41)$ keV, respectively. In the case of $^{105,106}$Tc, the updated $Q_β$ values are in agreement with a previous JYFLTRAP measurement, disagreeing with the values from the mass evaluation. The new mass values result in a more linear trend in two-neutron separation energies indicating that technetium ($Z=43$) isotopes around $N \approx 60$ are not a part of the island of shape coexistence around $^{100}$Zr$_{60}$.

Fission of 215Fr studied with gamma spectroscopic methods

Background: Asymmetric fission is known to occur in two regions, the actinides and sub-lead, and is dependent on the fissioning system excitation energy. Experimental evidence in the sub-lead region show that this mode is surprisingly persistent with increasing energy and its origin is not fully understood. Purpose: To experimentally study the fusion-fission reaction of $^{215}$Fr at moderate excitation energy and determine previously unknown independent fission yields and other properties. Method: The compound nucleus was formed in the reaction $^{18}$O + $^{197}$Au. The prompt gamma-rays emitted during the reaction were measured with the high efficiency and high granularity $ν$-ball2 spectrometer. Independent fission yields of even-even nuclei were determined by detecting triple-gamma cascades in the fission fragments. Results: The observed yields, although dominated by a symmetric peak, show maxima for heavy fragment of $Z \approx 54-56$, which is consistent with the known results in the actinide region but unexpected for the nuclide of interest, and at the studied excitation energy. Conclusions: The mode of asymmetric fission is present even at relatively high excitation energies in the system studied. This observation matches experimental findings in the sub-lead region, contrary to the actinides, and so far there is no well-developed explanation of this phenomenon.

Solaris photometric survey: Search for circumbinary companions using eclipse timing variations

Eclipse timing variations (ETV) have been a successful tool for detecting circumbinary companions to eclipsing binaries (EB). While TESS and Kepler have been prolific for ETV searches, they sometimes can be limited by time and sky coverage which can be addressed by specialised ground-based ETV surveys. We present the initial results from the Solaris photometric survey which uses four 0.5m robotic telescopes in the southern hemisphere to look for circumbinary companions. We present the method of light curve extraction, detrending, and EB modelling using the observations from the Solaris network. Using these light curves we extract precise eclipse timing for 7 EB and look for companions using a Lomb-Scargle periodogram search. We find two possible periodic signals for the target GSC 08814-01026. With the system having strong activity, we check for the feasibility of orbital solutions at these two periods. We find that the 245 +/- 1 d period is due to an M-dwarf mass companion. This makes GSC 08814-01026 a candidate compact hierarchical triple system. The other periodic signal at 146 +/- 1 d is an artefact of stellar activity.
