Pseudo-Riemannian Jacobi-Videv Manifolds

We exhibit several families of Jacobi-Videv pseudo-Riemannian manifolds which are not Einstein. We also exhibit Jacobi-Videv algebraic curvature tensors where the Ricci operator defines an almost complex structure.

Relating the curvature tensor and the complex Jacobi operator of an almost Hermitian manifold

Let J be a unitary almost complex structure on a Riemannian manifold (M,g). If x is a unit tangent vector, let P be the associated complex line spanned by x and by Jx. We show that if (M,g) is Hermitian or if (M,g) is nearly Kaehler, then either the complex Jacobi operator (JC(P)y=R(y,x)x+R(y,Jx)Jx) or the complex curvature operator (RC(P)y=R(x,Jx)y) completely determine the full curvature operator; this generalizes a well known result in the real setting to the complex setting. We also show this result fails for general almost Hermitian manifold.

The spectral geometry of the canonical Riemannian submersion of a compact Lie Group

Let G be a compact connected Lie group which is equipped with a bi-invariant Riemannian metric. Let m(x,y)=xy be the multiplication operator. We show the associated fibration m mapping GxG to G is a Riemannian submersion with totally geodesic fibers and we study the spectral geometry of this submersion. We show the pull back of eigenforms on the base have finite Fourier series on the total space and we give examples where arbitrarily many Fourier coefficients can be non-zero. We give necessary and sufficient conditions that the pull back of a form on the base is harmonic on the total space.

Algebraic theory of affine curvature tensors

We use curvature decompositions to construct generating sets for the space of algebraic curvature tensors and for the space of tensors with the same symmetries as those of a torsion free, Ricci symmetric connection; the latter naturally appear in relative hypersurface theory.

Jacobi--Tsankov manifolds which are not 2-step nilpotent

An algebraic curvature tensor A is said to be Jacobi-Tsankov if J(x)J(y)=J(y)J(x) for all x,y. This implies J(x)J(x)=0 for all x; necessarily A=0 in the Riemannian setting. Furthermore, this implies J(x)J(y)=0 for all x,y if the dimension is at most 13. We exhibit a 14-dimensional algebraic curvature tensor in signature (8,6) which is Jacobi--Tsankov but which has J(x)J(y) non 0 for some x,y. We determine the group of symmetries of this tensor and show that it is geometrically realizable by a wide variety of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds which are geodesically complete and have vanishing scalar Weyl invariants. Some of the manifolds in the family are symmetric spaces. Some are 0-curvature homogeneous but not locally homogeneous.

The global geometry of Riemannian manifolds with commuting curvature operators

We give manifolds in both the Riemannian and in the higher signature settings whose Riemann curvature operators commute, i.e. which satisfy R(a,b)R(c,d)=R(c,d)R(a,b) for all tangent vectors. These manifolds have global geometric phenomena which are quite different for higher signature manifolds than they are for Riemannian manifolds. Our focus is on global properties; questions of geodesic completeness and the behaviour of the exponential map are investigated.

Complex Osserman Algebraic Curvature Tensors and Clifford Families

We classify the algebraic curvature tensors which are both Osserman and complex Osserman in all but a finite number of exceptional dimensions.Information concerning the possible eigenvalue structures, which is provided by methods of algebraic topology, plays a central role in the analysis.

Pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with Commuting Jacobi Operators

We study the geometry of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds which are Jacobi--Tsankov, i.e. J(x)J(y)=J(y)J(x) for all tangent vectors x and y. We also study manifolds which are 2-step Jacobi nilpotent, i.e. J(x)J(y)=0 for all tangent vectors x and y.

Puffini-Videv Models and Manifolds

Let $J(π)$ be the higher order Jacobi operator. We study algebraic curvature tensors where $J(π)J(π^{\perp})=J(π^{\perp})J(π)$. In the Riemannian setting, we give a complete characterization of such tensors; in the pseudo-Riemannian setting, partial results are available. We present non-trivial geometric examples of Riemannian manifolds with this property.

Eta invariants with spectral boundary conditions

We study the asymptotics of the heat trace $\Tr\{fPe^{-tP^2}\}$ where $P$ is an operator of Dirac type, where $f$ is an auxiliary smooth smearing function which is used to localize the problem, and where we impose spectral boundary conditions. Using functorial techniques and special case calculations, the boundary part of the leading coefficients in the asymptotic expansion is found.

Heat Content Asymptotics for Riemannian manifolds with Zaremba boundary conditions

The existence of a full asymptotic expansion for the heat content asymptotics of an operator of Laplace type with classical Zaremba boundary conditions on a smooth manifold is established. The first three coefficients in this asymptotic expansion are determined in terms of geometric invariants; partial information is obtained about the fourth coefficient.

Isometry groups of k-curvature homogeneous pseudo-Riemannian manifolds

We study the isometry groups and Killing vector fields of a family of pseudo-Riemannian metrics on Euclidean space which have neutral signature (3+2p,3+2p). All are p+2 curvature homogeneous, all have vanishing Weyl scalar invariants, all are geodesically complete, and all are 0-curvature modeled on an indecomposible symmetric space. Some of these manifolds are not p+3 curvature homogeneous. Some are homogeneous but not symmetric.

Affine curvature homogeneous 3-dimensional Lorentz Manifolds

We study a family of 3-dimensional Lorentz manifolds. Some members of the family are 0-curvature homogeneous, 1-affine curvature homogeneous, but not 1-curvature homogeneous. Some are 1-curvature homogeneous but not 2-curvature homogeneous. All are 0-modeled on indecomposible local symmetric spaces. Some of the members of the family are geodesically complete, others are not. All have vanishing scalar invariants.

Curvature homogeneous signature (2,2) manifolds

We exhibit a family of generalized plane wave manifolds of signature (2,2). The geodesics in these manifolds extend for infinite time (i.e. they are complete), they are spacelike and timelike Jordan Osserman, and they are spacelike and timelike Jordan Ivanov-Petrova. Some are irreducible symmetric spaces. Some are homogeneous spaces but not symmetric. Some are 1-curvature homogeneous but not homogeneous. All are 0-modeled on the same irreducible symmetric space. We determine the Killing vector fields for these manifolds.

Complete k-curvature homogeneous pseudo-Riemannian manifolds

For any k which is at least 2, we exhibit complete k-curvature homogeneous neutral signature pseudo-Riemannian manifolds which are not k+1-affine curvature homogeneous, and hence not locally homogeneous. All the local scalar Weyl invariants of these manifolds vanish. These manifolds are Ricci flat, Osserman, and Ivanov-Petrova.
