The data analysis pipeline for the Microchannel X-ray Telescope on board the SVOM mission

The Space-based multi-band astronomical Variable Objects Monitor (SVOM) mission was launched in June 2024. It is a joint Sino-French collaboration designed to detect, localize, and study gammaray bursts (GRBs) and other high-energy transients. Among its onboard instruments, the Microchannel Xray Telescope (MXT) plays a central role by providing follow-up X-ray observations of GRB afterglows and other transient phenomena. To ensure timely and accurate scientific exploitation of MXT observations, a dedicated ground processing pipeline has been developed. This pipeline automatically ingests raw event lists, performs calibration, background and time filtering, corrects instrumental effects, and produces science-ready data products such as images and light curves and spectra of detected sources. In this paper, we describe the architecture and key components of the MXT data analysis pipeline, highlighting its modular design and integration within the broader SVOM ground segment. We also show results from real datasets, demonstrating the pipeline's ability to meet the performance requirements of the mission.

New, late-type spectroscopic binaries with X-ray emission

In this paper we present a spectroscopic study of six double-lined binaries, five of which were recently discovered in a high-resolution spectroscopic survey of optical counterparts of stellar X-ray sources. Thanks to high-resolution spectra acquired with CAOS spectropolarimeter during seven years, we were able to measure the radial velocities of their components and determine their orbital elements. We have applied our code COMPO2 to determine the spectral types and atmospheric parameters of the components of these spectroscopic binaries and found that two of these systems are composed of main sequence stars, while the other four contain at least one evolved (giant or subgiant) component, similar to other well-known RS CVn systems. The subtraction of a photospheric template built up with spectra of non-active stars of the same spectral type as those of the components of each system has allowed us to investigate the chromospheric emission that fills in the H$α$ cores. We found that the colder component is normally the one with the largest H$α$ emission. None of the systems show a detectable LiI$λ$6708 line, with the exception of TYC 4279-1821-1, which exhibits high photospheric abundances in both components. Photometric time series from the literature allowed us to assess that the five systems with a nearly circular orbit have also photometric periods close or equal to the orbital ones, indicating spin-orbit synchronization. For the system with a highly eccentric orbit, a possible pseudo-synchronization with the periastron velocity is suggested.

Discovery of new members of the nearby young stellar association in Cepheus

Young field stars are hardly distinguishable from older ones because their space motion rapidly mixes them with the stellar population of the Galactic plane. Nevertheless, a careful target selection allows for young stars to be spotted throughout the sky. We aim to identify additional sources associated with the four young comoving stars that we discovered towards the CO Cepheus void and to provide a comprehensive view of the Cepheus association. Based on multivariate analysis methods, we have built an extended sample of 193 young star candidates, which are the optical and infrared counterparts of ROSAT All-Sky Survey and XMM-Newton X-ray sources. From optical spectroscopic observations, we measured their radial velocity with the cross-correlation technique. We derived their atmospheric parameters and projected rotational velocity with the code ROTFIT. We applied the subtraction of inactive templates to measure the lithium equivalent width, from which we infer their lithium abundance and age. Finally, we studied their kinematics using the second Gaia data release. Our sample is mainly composed of young or active stars and multiple systems. We identify two distinct populations of young stars that are spatially and kinematically separated. Those with an age between 100 and 300 Myr are mostly projected towards the Galactic plane. In contrast, 23 of the 37 sources younger than 30 Myr are located in the CO Cepheus void, and 21 of them belong to the stellar kinematic group that we previously reported in this sky area. We report a total of 32 bona fide members and nine candidates for this nearby (distance = 157$\pm$10 pc) young (age = 10-20 Myr) stellar association. According to the spatial distribution of its members, the original cluster is already dispersed and partially mixed with the local population of the Galactic plane.

Contemporaneous broad-band photometry and H$α$ observations of T Tauri stars

The study of contemporaneous variations of the continuum flux and emission lines is of great importance to understand the different astrophysical processes at work in T Tauri stars. In this paper we present the results of a simultaneous $BVRI$ and H$α$ photometric monitoring, contemporaneous to medium-resolution spectroscopy of six T Tauri stars in the Taurus-Auriga star forming region. We have characterized the H$α$ photometric system using synthetic templates and the contemporaneous spectra of the targets. We show that we can achieve a precision corresponding to 2$-$3 Å in the H$α$ equivalent width, in typical observing conditions. The spectral analysis has allowed us to determine the basic stellar parameters and the values of quantities related to the accretion. In particular, we have measured a significant veiling only for the three targets with the strongest H$α$ emission (T Tau, FM Tau, and DG Tau). The broad-band photometric variations are found to be in the range 0.05$-$0.70 mag and are often paired to variations in the H$α$ intensity, which becomes stronger when the stellar continuum is weaker. In addition, we have mostly observed a redder $V-I$ and a bluer $B-V$ color as the stars become fainter. For most of the targets, the timescales of these variations seem to be longer than the rotation period. One exception is T Tau, for which the broad-band photometry varies with the rotation period. The most plausible interpretation of these photometric and H$α$ variations is that they are due to non-stationary mass accretion onto the stars, but rotational modulation can play a major role in some cases.

A Spectroscopic Survey of the Youngest Field Stars in the Solar Neighborhood. II. The optically faint sample

Star formation in the solar neighborhood is mainly traced by young stars in open clusters, associations and in the field, which can be identified by their X-ray emission. The determination of stellar parameters for the counterparts of X-ray sources is crucial for their study. This work extends the spectroscopic study of the RasTyc sample, based on TYCHO and RASS catalogs, to stars fainter than V=9.5 mag. We acquired 625 high-resolution spectra for 443 targets with four different instruments in the Northern hemisphere. The radial and rotational velocity (vsini) of our targets are measured by means of the cross-correlation technique, which is also helpful to discover binaries and multiple systems. We use the code ROTFIT for determining the atmospheric parameters and vsini of the single stars and SB1 systems. For these objects, we also measured the equivalent widths of the H$α$ and LiI-6708Å lines, which enables us to derive their chromospheric activity level and lithium abundance. We make use of Gaia DR1 parallaxes and proper motions for locating the targets in the HR diagram and for computing the space velocity components of the youngest objects. We find a remarkable fraction (>35%) of binaries and multiple systems. Our sample is mostly (60%) composed of stars younger than the members of the UMa cluster. We identify 42 very young stars, which lie above or very close to the Pleiades upper envelope of the lithium abundance. A significant fraction (12%) of giants/subgiants stars is also present in our sample. Some of them are also lithium rich (A(Li)>1.4).

Masses of the components of SB2 binaries observed with Gaia. IV. Accurate SB2 orbits for 14 binaries, and masses of 3 binaries

The orbital motion of non-contact double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2), with periods of a few tens of days to several years, holds unique accurate informations on individual stellar masses, that only long-term monitoring can unlock. The combination of radial velocity measurements from high-resolution spectrographs and astrometric measurements from high-precision interferometers allows the derivation of SB2 components masses down to the percent precision. Since 2010, we observed a large sample of SB2 with the SOPHIE spectrograph at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence, aiming at the derivation of orbital elements with sufficient accuracy to obtain masses of components with relative errors as low as 1$\%$ when the astrometric measurements of the Gaia satellite will be taken into account. In this paper we present the results from six years of observations of 14 SB2 systems with periods ranging from 33 to 4185 days. Using the TODMOR algorithm we computed radial velocities from the spectra, and then derived the orbital elements of these binary systems. The minimum masses of the 28 stellar components are then obtained with a sample average accuracy of 1.0$\pm$0.2$\,\%$. Combining the radial velocities with existing interferometric measurements, we derived the masses of the primary and secondary components of HIP 61100, HIP 95995 and HIP 101382 with relative errors for components (A,B) of respectively (2.0, 1.7)$\,\%$, (3.7, 3.7)$\,\%$, and (0.2, 0.1)$\,\%$. Using the Cesam2k stellar evolution code, we could constrain the initial He-abundance, age and metallicity for HIP 61100 and HIP 95995.

The XMM-Newton serendipitous survey. VII. The third XMM-Newton serendipitous source catalogue

Thanks to the large collecting area (3 x ~1500 cm$^2$ at 1.5 keV) and wide field of view (30' across in full field mode) of the X-ray cameras on board the European Space Agency X-ray observatory XMM-Newton, each individual pointing can result in the detection of hundreds of X-ray sources, most of which are newly discovered. Recently, many improvements in the XMM-Newton data reduction algorithms have been made. These include enhanced source characterisation and reduced spurious source detections, refined astrometric precision, greater net sensitivity and the extraction of spectra and time series for fainter sources, with better signal-to-noise. Further, almost 50\% more observations are in the public domain compared to 2XMMi-DR3, allowing the XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (XMM-SSC) to produce a much larger and better quality X-ray source catalogue. The XMM-SSC has developed a pipeline to reduce the XMM-Newton data automatically and using improved calibration a new catalogue version has been produced from XMM-Newton data made public by 2013 Dec. 31 (13 years of data). Manual screening ensures the highest data quality. This catalogue is known as 3XMM. In the latest release, 3XMM-DR5, there are 565962 X-ray detections comprising 396910 unique X-ray sources. For the 133000 brightest sources, spectra and lightcurves are provided. For all detections, the positions on the sky, a measure of the quality of the detection, and an evaluation of the X-ray variability is provided, along with the fluxes and count rates in 7 X-ray energy bands, the total 0.2-12 keV band counts, and four hardness ratios. To identify the detections, a cross correlation with 228 catalogues is also provided for each X-ray detection. 3XMM-DR5 is the largest X-ray source catalogue ever produced. Thanks to the large array of data products, it is an excellent resource in which to find new and extreme objects.

Masses of the components of SB2 binaries observed with Gaia. II. Masses derived from PIONIER interferometric observations for Gaia validation

In anticipation of the Gaia astrometric mission, a sample of spectroscopic binaries is being observed since 2010 with the Sophie spectrograph at the Haute--Provence Observatory. Our aim is to derive the orbital elements of double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2s) with an accuracy sufficient to finally obtain the masses of the components with relative errors as small as 1 % when combined with Gaia astrometric measurements. In order to validate the masses derived from Gaia, interferometric observations are obtained for three SB2s in our sample with F-K components: HIP 14157, HIP 20601 and HIP 117186. The masses of the six stellar components are derived. Due to its edge-on orientation, HIP 14157 is probably an eclipsing binary. We note that almost all the derived masses are a few percent larger than the expectations from the standard spectral-type-mass calibration and mass-luminosity relation. Our calculation also leads to accurate parallaxes for the three binaries, and the Hipparcos parallaxes are confirmed.

The XMM-Newton SSC survey of the Galactic Plane

Many different classes of X-ray sources contribute to the Galactic landscape at high energies. Although the nature of the most luminous X-ray emitters is now fairly well understood, the population of low-to-medium X-ray luminosity (Lx = 10^27-10^34 erg/s) sources remains much less studied, our knowledge being mostly based on the observation of local members. The advent of wide field and high sensitivity X-ray telescopes such as XMM-Newton now offers the opportunity to observe this low-to-medium Lx population at large distances. We report on the results of a Galactic plane survey conducted by the XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre (SSC). Beyond its astrophysical goals, this survey aims at gathering a representative sample of identified X-ray sources at low latitude that can be used later on to statistically identify the rest of the serendipitous sources discovered in the Milky Way. The survey is based on 26 XMM-Newton observations, obtained at |b| < 20 deg, distributed over a large range in Galactic longitudes and covering a summed area of 4 deg2. The flux limit of our survey is 2 x 10-15 erg/cm^2/s in the soft (0.5 - 2 keV) band and 1 x 10^-14 erg/cm^2/s in the hard (2 - 12 keV) band. We detect a total of 1319 individual X-ray sources. Using optical follow-up observations supplemented by cross-correlation with a large range of multi-wavelength archival catalogues we identify 316 X-ray sources. This constitutes the largest group of spectroscopically identified low latitude X-ray sources at this flux level. The majority of the identified X-ray sources are active coronae with spectral types in the range A - M at maximum distances of ~ 1 kpc. The number of identified active stars increases towards late spectral types, reaching a maximum at K. (abridged)

A new method based on Markov chains for deriving SB2 orbits directly from their spectra

We present a new method to derive orbital elements of double-lined spectroscopic binaries (SB2). The aim is to have accurate orbital parameters of a selection of SB2 in order to prepare the exploitation of astrometric Gaia observations. Combined with our results, they should allow one to measure the mass of each star with a precision of better than 1%. The new method presented here consists of using the spectra at all epochs simultaneously to derive the orbital elements without templates. It is based on a Markov chain including a new method for disentangling the spectra.

Crossing the Gould Belt in the Orion vicinity

We present a study of the large-scale spatial distribution of 6482 RASS X-ray sources in approximately 5000 deg^2 in the direction of Orion. We examine the astrophysical properties of a sub-sample of ~100 optical counterparts, using optical spectroscopy. This sub-sample is used to investigate the space density of the RASS young star candidates by comparing X-ray number counts with Galactic model predictions. We characterize the observed sub-sample in terms of spectral type, lithium content, radial and rotational velocities, as well as iron abundance. A population synthesis model is then applied to analyze the stellar content of the RASS in the studied area. We find that stars associated with the Orion star-forming region do show a high lithium content. A population of late-type stars with lithium equivalent widths larger than Pleiades stars of the same spectral type (hence younger than ~70-100 Myr) is found widely spread over the studied area. Two new young stellar aggregates, namely "X-ray Clump 0534+22" (age~2-10 Myr) and "X-ray Clump 0430-08" (age~2-20 Myr), are also identified. The spectroscopic follow-up and comparison with Galactic model predictions reveal that the X-ray selected stellar population in the direction of Orion is characterized by three distinct components, namely the clustered, the young dispersed, and the widespread field populations. The clustered population is mainly associated with regions of recent or ongoing star formation and correlates spatially with molecular clouds. The dispersed young population follows a broad lane apparently coinciding spatially with the Gould Belt, while the widespread population consists primarily of active field stars older than 100 Myr. We expect the "bi-dimensional" picture emerging from this study to grow in depth as soon as the distance and the kinematics of the studied sources will become available from the future Gaia mission.

Large-scale young Gould Belt stars across Orion

We report first results on the large-scale distribution of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) X-ray sources in a 5000 deg^2 field centered on Orion. Our final aim is to study the properties of different widespread populations in the Orion Complex close to the Gould Belt (GB) in order to trace the star formation history in the solar neighbourhood.

A sparse population of young stars in Cepheus

Once mixed in the ambient galactic plane stellar population, young stars are virtually indiscernible because neither their global photometric properties nor the presence of nearby gas can help to disentangle them from older ones. Nevertheless, the study of the RasTyc sample revealed 4 lithium-rich field stars displaying the same space motion, which are located within a few degrees from each other on the celestial sphere near the Cepheus-Cassiopeia complex and at a similar distance from the Sun. Both physical and kinematical indicators show that all these stars are young, with ages in the range 10-30 Myr. Using multivariate analysis methods, we selected optical counterparts of ROSAT All-Sky Survey / XMM-Newton X-ray sources cross-identified with late-type stars around these 4 young stars. Recent spectroscopic observations of this sample allowed us to discover additional lithium-rich sources. Our preliminary results showed that some of them share the same space motion as the 4 young comoving stars. They have properties rather similar to the members of the TW Hydrae association, although they seem to be slightly older and are located in the northern hemisphere. Nearby young stars in the field are of great importance to understand the recent local history of star formation, as well as to give new insight into the process of star formation outside standard star-forming regions and to study the evolution of circumstellar discs.

Discovery of "isolated" comoving T Tauri stars in Cepheus

During the course of a large spectroscopic survey of X-ray active late-type stars in the solar neighbourhood, we discovered four lithium-rich stars packed within just a few degrees on the sky. These very young stars are projected several degrees away from the Cepheus-Cassiopea clouds, in front of an area void of interstellar matter. As such, they are very good "isolated" T Tauri star candidates. We acquired high-resolution optical spectra as well as photometric data allowing us to investigate in detail their nature and physical parameters with the aim of testing the "runaway" and "in-situ" formation scenarios. We derive accurate radial and rotational velocities and perform an automatic spectral classification. The spectral subtraction technique is used to infer chromospheric activity level in the H-alpha line core and clean the spectra of photospheric lines before measuring the equivalent width of the lithium absorption line. Both physical (lithium content, magnetic activity) and kinematical indicators show that all stars are very young (ages in the range 10-30 Myr). In particular, the spectral energy distribution of TYC4496-780-1 displays a strong near- and far-infrared excess, typical of T Tauri stars still surrounded by an accretion disc. They also share the same Galactic motion, proving that they form a homogeneous moving group of stars with the same origin. The most plausible explanation of how these "isolated" T Tauri stars formed is the "in-situ" model, although accurate distances are needed to clarify their connection with the Cepheus-Cassiopeia complex.

The X-ray source content of the XMM-Newton Galactic Plane Survey

We report the results of an optical campaign carried out by the XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre with the specific goal of identifying the brightest X-ray sources in the XMM-Newton Galactic Plane Survey of Hands et al. (2004). In addition to photometric and spectroscopic observations obtained at the ESO-VLT and ESO-3.6m, we used cross-correlations with the 2XMMi, USNO-B1.0, 2MASS and GLIMPSE catalogues to progress the identification process. Active coronae account for 16 of the 30 identified X-ray sources. Many of the identified hard X-ray sources are associated with massive stars emitting at intermediate X-ray luminosities of 10^32-34 erg/s. Among these are a very absorbed likely hyper-luminous star with X-ray/optical spectra and luminosities comparable with those of eta Carina, a new X-ray selected WN8 Wolf-Rayet star, a new Be/X-ray star belonging to the growing class of Gamma-Cas analogs and a possible supergiant X-ray binary of the kind discovered recently by INTEGRAL. One of the sources, XGPS-25 has a counterpart which exhibits HeII 4686 and Bowen CIII-NIII emission lines suggesting a quiescent or X-ray shielded Low Mass X-ray Binary, although its properties might also be consistent with a rare kind of cataclysmic variable (CV). We also report the discovery of three new CVs, one of which is a likely magnetic system. The soft (0.4-2.0 keV) band LogN-LogS curve is completely dominated by active stars in the flux range of 1x10^-13 to 1x10^-14 erg/cm2/s. In total, we are able to identify a large fraction of the hard (2-10 keV) X-ray sources in the flux range of 1x10^-12 to 1x10^-13 erg/cm2/s with Galactic objects at a rate consistent with that expected for the Galactic contribution only. A spectroscopic survey of the youngest field stars in the solar neighbourhood. I. The optically bright sample

We present the first results of a ground-based programme conducted on 1-4m class telescopes. Our sample consists of 1097 active and presumably young stars, all of them being optical counterparts of RASS X-ray sources in the northern hemisphere. We concentrate on the 704 optically brightest (V_Ticho<=9.5 mag) candidates. We acquired high-res spectroscopy in the Halpha/Li spectral regions for 426 of such stars without relevant literature data. We describe the sample and the observations and we start to discuss its physical properties. We used a cross-correlation technique and other tools to derive accurate radial/rotational velocities and to perform a spectral classification for both single and SB2 stars. The spectral subtraction technique was used to derive chromospheric activity levels and Li abundances. We estimated the fraction of young single stars and multiple systems in stellar soft X-ray surveys and the contamination by more evolved systems, like RS CVn's. We classified stars on the basis of Li abundance and give a glimpse of their sky distribution. The sample appears to be a mixture of young Pleiades-/Hyades- like stars plus an older Li-poor population (~1-2 Gyr). 7 stars with Li abundance compatible with the age of IC 2602 (~30 Myr) or younger were detected as well, although 2 appear to be Li-rich giants. The discovery of a large number of Li-rich giants is another outcome of this survey. The contamination of soft X-ray surveys by old systems in which the activity level is enhanced by tidal synchronisation is not negligible, especially for K-type stars. 5 stars with Li content close to the primordial abundance are probably associated with known moving groups in the solar neighbourhood. Some of them are PTTS candidates according to their positions in the HR diagram.

The XMM-Newton Serendipitous Survey. V. The Second XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue

Aims: Pointed observations with XMM-Newton provide the basis for creating catalogues of X-ray sources detected serendipitously in each field. This paper describes the creation and characteristics of the 2XMM catalogue. Methods: The 2XMM catalogue has been compiled from a new processing of the XMM-Newton EPIC camera data. The main features of the processing pipeline are described in detail. Results: The catalogue, the largest ever made at X-ray wavelengths, contains 246,897 detections drawn from 3491 public XMM-Newton observations over a 7-year interval, which relate to 191,870 unique sources. The catalogue fields cover a sky area of more than 500 sq.deg. The non-overlapping sky area is ~360 sq.deg. (~1% of the sky) as many regions of the sky are observed more than once by XMM-Newton. The catalogue probes a large sky area at the flux limit where the bulk of the objects that contribute to the X-ray background lie and provides a major resource for generating large, well-defined X-ray selected source samples, studying the X-ray source population and identifying rare object types. The main characteristics of the catalogue are presented, including its photometric and astrometric properties .

New triple systems in the RasTyc sample of stellar X-ray sources

During the study of a large set of late-type stellar X-ray sources, we discovered a large fraction of multiple systems. In this paper we investigate the orbital elements and kinematic properties of three new spectroscopic triple systems as well as spectral types and astrophysical parameters (T_eff, log g, vsin i, log N(Li)) of their components. We conducted follow-up optical observations, both photometric and spectroscopic at high resolution, of these systems. We used a synthetic approach and the cross-correlation method to derive most of the stellar parameters. We estimated reliable radial velocities and deduced the orbital elements of the inner binaries. The comparison of the observed spectra with synthetic composite ones, obtained as the weighted sum of three spectra of non-active reference stars, allowed us to determine the stellar parameters for each component of these systems. We found all are only composed of main sequence stars. These three systems are certainly stable hierarchical triples composed of short-period inner binaries plus a tertiary component in a long-period orbit. From their kinematics and/or Lithium content, these systems result to be fairly young.
