Demon-free quantum Brownian motors

A quantum Smoluchowski equation is put forward that consistently describes thermal quantum states. In particular, it notably does not induce a violation of the second law of thermodynamics. This so modified kinetic equation is applied to study {\it analytically} directed quantum transport at strong friction in arbitrarily shaped ratchet potentials that are driven by nonthermal two-state noise. Depending on the mutual interplay of quantum tunneling and quantum reflection these quantum corrections can induce both, either a sizable enhancement or a suppression of transport. Moreover, the threshold for current reversals becomes markedly shifted due to such quantum fluctuations.

Rocking bistable systems: use and abuse of Linear Response Theory

The response of a nonlinear stochastic system driven by an external sinusoidal time dependent force is studied by a variety of numerical and analytical approximations. The validity of linear response theory is put to a critical test by comparing its predictions with numerical solutions over an extended parameter regime of driving amplitudes and frequencies. The relevance of the driving frequency for the applicability of linear response theory is explored.

Interplay of frequency-synchronization with noise: current resonances, giant diffusion and diffusion-crests

We elucidate how the presence of noise may significantly interact with the synchronization mechanism of systems exhibiting frequency-locking. The response of these systems exhibits a rich variety of behaviors, such as resonances and anti-resonances which can be controlled by the intensity of noise. The transition between different locked regimes provokes the development of a multiple enhancement of the effective diffusion. This diffusion behavior is accompanied by a crest-like peak-splitting cascade when the distribution of the lockings is self-similar, as it occurs in periodic systems that are able to exhibit a Devil's staircase sequence of frequency-lockings.

Time-scale invariance of relaxation processes of density fluctuation in slow neutron scattering in liquid cesium

The realization of idea of time-scale invariance for relaxation processes in liquids has been performed by the memory functions formalism. The best agreement with experimental data for the dynamic structure factor $S(k,ω)$ of liquid cesium near melting point in the range of wave vectors ($0.4 \ang^{-1} \leq k \leq 2.55 \ang^{-1}$) is found with the assumption of concurrence of relaxation scales for memory functions of third and fourth orders. Spatial dispersion of the four first points in spectrum of statistical parameter of non-Markovity $ ε_{i}(k,ω)$ at $i=1,2,3,4$ has allowed to reveal the non-Markov nature of collective excitations in liquid cesium, connected with long-range memory effect.

Stochastic resonance as a collective property of ion channel assemblies

By use of a stochastic generalization of the Hodgkin-Huxley model we investigate both the phenomena of stochastic resonance (SR) and coherence resonance (CR) in variable size patches of an excitable cell membrane. Our focus is on the challenge how internal noise stemming from individual ion channels does affect collective properties of the whole ensemble. We investigate both an unperturbed situation with no applied stimuli and one in which the membrane is stimulated externally by a periodic signal and additional external noise. For the nondriven case, we demonstrate the existence of an optimal size of the membrane patch for which the internal noise causes a most regular spike activity. This phenomenon shall be termed intrinsic CR. In presence of an applied periodic stimulus we demonstrate that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) exhibits SR vs. decreasing patch size, or vs. increasing internal noise strength, respectively. Moreover, we demonstrate that conventional SR vs. the external noise intensity occurs only for sufficiently large membrane patches, when the intensity of internal noise is below its optimal level. Thus, biological SR seemingly is rooted in the collective properties of large ion channel ensembles rather than in the individual stochastic dynamics of single ion channels.

Strong coupling theory for tunneling and vibrational relaxation in driven bistable systems

A study of the dynamics of a tunneling particle in a driven bistable potential which is moderately-to-strongly coupled to a bath is presented. Upon restricting the system dynamics to the Hilbert space spanned by the M lowest energy eigenstates of the bare static potential, a set of coupled non-Markovian master equations for the diagonal elements of the reduced density matrix, within the discrete variale representation, is derived. The resulting dynamics is in good agreement with predictions of ab-initio real-time path integral simulations. Numerous results, analytical as well as numerical, for the quantum relaxation rate and for the asymptotic populations are presented. Our method is particularly convenient to investigate the case of shallow, time-dependent potential barriers and moderate-to-strong damping, where both a semi-classical and a Redfield-type approach are inappropriate.

Strong coupling theory for driven tunneling and vibrational relaxation

We investigate on a unified basis tunneling and vibrational relaxation in driven dissipative multistable systems described by their N lowest lying unperturbed levels. By use of the discrete variable representation we derive a set of coupled non-Markovian master equations. We present analytical treatments that describe the dynamics in the regime of strong system-bath coupling. Our findings are corroborated by ``ab-initio'' real-time path integral calculations.

Controlling decoherence of a two-level-atom in a lossy cavity

By use of external periodic driving sources, we demonstrate the possibility of controlling the coherent as well as the decoherent dynamics of a two-level atom placed in a lossy cavity. The control of the coherent dynamics is elucidated for the phenomenon of coherent destruction of tunneling (CDT), i.e., the coherent dynamics of a driven two-level atom in a quantum superposition state can be brought practically to a complete standstill. We study this phenomenon for different initial preparations of the two-level atom. We then proceed to investigate the decoherence originating from the interaction of the two-level atom with a lossy cavity mode. The loss mechanism is described in terms of a microscopic model that couples the cavity mode to a bath of harmonic field modes. A suitably tuned external cw-laser field applied to the two-level atom slows down considerably the decoherence of the atom. We demonstrate the suppression of decoherence for two opposite initial preparations of the atomic state: a quantum superposition state as well as the ground state. These findings can be used to the effect of a proficient battling of decoherence in qubit manipulation processes.

Amorphous thin film growth: theory compared with experiment

Experimental results on amorphous ZrAlCu thin film growth and the dynamics of the surface morphology as predicted from a minimal nonlinear stochastic deposition equation are analysed and compared. Key points of this study are (i) an estimation procedure for coefficients entering into the growth equation and (ii) a detailed analysis and interpretation of the time evolution of the correlation length and the surface roughness. The results corroborate the usefulness of the deposition equation as a tool for studying amorphous growth processes.
