Eigenvalue Distributions of the QCD Dirac Operator

We compute by Monte Carlo methods the individual distributions of the $k$th smallest Dirac operator eigenvalues in QCD, and compare them with recent analytical predictions. We do this for both massless and massive quarks in an SU(3) gauge theory with staggered fermions. Very precise agreement is found in all cases. As a simple by-product we also extract the microscopic spectral density of the Dirac operator in SU(3) gauge theory with dynamical massive fermions for $N_f=1$ and 2, and obtain high-accuracy agreement with analytical expressions.

The Dirac Operator Spectrum and Effective Field Theory

When chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken, the low-energy part of the Dirac operator spectrum can be computed analytically in the chiral limit. The tool is effective field theory or, equivalently in this case, Random Matrix Theory.

Partially Quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory and the Replica Method

We describe a novel framework for partially quenched chiral perturbation theory based on the replica method. The computational rules are exceedingly simple. We illustrate these rules by computing the partially quenched chiral condensate to one-loop order. By considering arbitrary chiral $k$-point functions we show explicitly to one-loop order the equivalence between this method and the one based on supersymmetry. It is possible to go smoothly from the conventional replica method to a supersymmetric variant by choosing the number of valence quarks to be negative.

Low-lying Eigenvalues of the QCD Dirac Operator at Finite Temperature

We compute the low-lying spectrum of the staggered Dirac operator above and below the finite temperature phase transition in both quenched QCD and in dynamical four flavor QCD. In both cases we find, in the high temperature phase, a density with close to square root behavior, $ρ(λ) \sim (λ-λ_0)^{1/2}$. In the quenched simulations we find, in addition, a volume independent tail of small eigenvalues extending down to zero. In the dynamical simulations we also find a tail, decreasing with decreasing mass, at the small end of the spectrum. However, the tail falls off quite quickly and does not seem to extend to zero at these couplings. We find that the distribution of the smallest Dirac operator eigenvalues provides an efficient observable for an accurate determination of the location of the chiral phase transition, as first suggested by Jackson and Verbaarschot.

On Finite-Volume Gauge Theory Partition Functions

We prove a Mahoux-Mehta--type theorem for finite-volume partition functions of SU(N_c\geq 3) gauge theories coupled to fermions in the fundamental representation. The large-volume limit is taken with the constraint V << 1/m_π^4. The theorem allows one to express any k-point correlation function of the microscopic Dirac operator spectrum entirely in terms of the 2-point function. The sum over topological charges of the gauge fields can be explicitly performed for these k-point correlation functions. A connection to an integrable KP hierarchy, for which the finite-volume partition function is a $τ$-function, is pointed out. Relations between the effective partition functions for these theories in 3 and 4 dimensions are derived. We also compute analytically, and entirely from finite-volume partition functions, the microscopic spectral density of the Dirac operator in SU(N_c) gauge theories coupled to quenched fermions in the adjoint representation. The result coincides exactly with earlier results based on Random Matrix Theory.

Superfield BRST Charge and the Master Action

Using a superfield formulation of extended phase space, we propose a new form of the Hamiltonian action functional. A remarkable feature of this construction is that it directly leads to the BV master action on phase space. Conversely, superspace can be used to construct nilpotent BRST charges directly from solutions to the classical Lagrangian Master Equation. We comment on the relation between these constructions and the specific master action proposal of Alexandrov, Kontsevich, Schwarz and Zaboronsky.

Looking for Effects of Topology in the Dirac Spectrum of Staggered Fermions

We classify SU(3) gauge field configurations in different topological sectors by the smearing technique. In each sector we compute the distribution of low lying eigenvalues of the staggered Dirac operator. In all sectors we find perfect agreement with the predictions for the sector of topological charge zero. The smallest Dirac operator eigenvalues of staggered fermions at presently realistic lattice couplings are thus insensitive to gauge field topology. On the smeared configurations, $4ν$ eigenvalues go to zero in agreement with the index theorem.

Finite-Volume Scaling of the Quenched Chiral Condensate

In the large-volume limit $V\to\infty$ with $V << 1/m_π^4$ the mass-dependent chiral condensate is predicted to satisfy exact finite-volume scaling laws that fall into three major universality classes. We test these analytical predictions with staggered fermions and overlap fermions in gauge field sectors of fixed topological charge $ν$.

Universal Scaling of the Chiral Condensate in Finite-Volume Gauge Theories

We confront exact analytical predictions for the finite-volume scaling of the chiral condensate with data from quenched lattice gauge theory simulations. Using staggered fermions in both the fundamental and adjoint representations, and gauge groups SU(2) and SU(3), we are able to test simultaneously all of the three chiral universality classes. With overlap fermions we also test the predictions for gauge field sectors of non-zero topological charge. Excellent agreement is found in most cases, and the deviations are understood in the others.

Staggered Fermions and Gauge Field Topology

Based on a large number of smearing steps, we classify SU(3) gauge field configurations in different topological sectors. For each sector we compare the exact analytical predictions for the microscopic Dirac operator spectrum of quenched staggered fermions. In all sectors we find perfect agreement with the predictions for the sector of topological charge zero, showing explicitly that the smallest Dirac operator eigenvalues of staggered fermions at presently realistic lattice couplings are insensitive to gauge field topology. On the smeared configurations, $4ν$ eigenvalues clearly separate out from the rest on configurations of topological charge $ν$, and move towards zero in agreement with the index theorem.

Topology and the Dirac Operator Spectrum in Finite-Volume Gauge Theories

The interplay between between gauge-field winding numbers, theta-vacua, and the Dirac operator spectrum in finite-volume gauge theories is reconsidered. To assess the weight of each topological sector, we compare the mass-dependent chiral condensate in gauge field sectors of fixed topological index with the answer obtained by summing over the topological charge. Also the microscopic Dirac operator spectrum in the full finite-volume Yang-Mills theory is obtained in this way, by summing over all topological sectors with the appropriate weight.

The Microscopic Spectral Density of the QCD Dirac Operator

We derive the microscopic spectral density of the Dirac operator in $SU(N_c\geq 3)$ Yang-Mills theory coupled to $N_f$ fermions in the fundamental representation. An essential technical ingredient is an exact rewriting of this density in terms of integrations over the super Riemannian manifold $Gl(N_f+1|1)$. The result agrees exactly with earlier calculations based on Random Matrix Theory.

Superfield Formulation of the Phase Space Path Integral

We give a superfield formulation of the path integral on an arbitrary curved phase space, with or without first class constraints. Canonical tranformations and BRST transformations enter in a unified manner. The superpartners of the original phase space variables precisely conspire to produce the correct path integral measure, as Pfaffian ghosts. When extended to the case of second-class constraints, the correct path integral measure is again reproduced after integrating over the superpartners. These results suggest that the superfield formulation is of first-principle nature.

Microscopic Spectral Density of the Dirac Operator in Quenched QCD

Measurements of the lowest-lying eigenvalues of the staggered fermion Dirac operator are made on ensembles of equilibrium gauge field configurations in quenched SU(3) lattice gauge theory. The results are compared with exact analytical predictions in the microscopic finite-volume scaling regime.

Consistency Conditions for Finite-Volume Partition Functions

Using relations from random matrix theory, we derive exact expressions for all $n$-point spectral correlation functions of Dirac operator eigenvalues in terms of finite-volume partition functions. This is done for both chiral symplectic and chiral unitary random matrix ensembles, which correspond to $SU(N_c \geq 3)$ gauge theories with $N_f$ fermions in the adjoint and fundamental representations, respectively. In the latter case we infer from this an infinite sequence of consistency conditions that must be satisfied by the corresponding finite-volume partition functions.

A Quark-Antiquark Condensate in Three-Dimensional QCD

Three-dimensional lattice QCD is studied by Monte Carlo simulations within the quenched approximation. At zero temperature a quark-antiquark condensate is observed in the limit of vanishing quark masses. The condensate vanishes continuously at the finite-temperature deconfinement phase transition of the theory. A natural interpretation of this phenomenon in the full theory with dynamical quarks is in terms of the spontaneous flavor symmetry breaking $U(N_f) \to U(N_f/2)\times U(N_f/2)$. In addition, the spectrum of low-lying Dirac operator eigenvalues is computed and found to be consistent with a flat distribution at zero temperature, in agreement with analytical predictions.

QCD Dirac Spectra With and Without Random Matrix Theory

Recent work on the spectrum of the Euclidean Dirac operator spectrum show that the exact microscopic spectral density can be computed in both random matrix theory, and directly from field theory. Exact relations to effective Lagrangians with additional quark species form the bridge between the two formulations. Taken together with explicit computations in the chGUE random matrix ensemble, a series of universality theorems are used to prove that the finite-volume QCD partition function coincides exactly with the universal double-microscopic limit of chUE random matrix partition functions. In the limit where N_f and N_c both go to infinity with the ratio N_f/N_c fixed, the relevant effective Lagrangian undergoes a third order phase transition of Gross-Witten type.
