Comments on the Covariant Sp(2)-Symmetric Lagrangian BRST Formalism

We give a simple geometrical picture of the basic structures of the covariant $Sp(2)$ symmetric quantization formalism -- triplectic quantization -- recently suggested by Batalin, Marnelius and Semikhatov. In particular, we show that the appearance of an even Poisson bracket is not a particular property of triplectic quantization. Rather, any solution of the classical master equation generates on a Lagrangian surface of the antibracket an even Poisson bracket. Also other features of triplectic quantization can be identified with aspects of conventional Lagrangian BRST quantization without extended BRST symmetry.

Partition Function Zeros of an Ising Spin Glass

We study the pattern of zeros emerging from exact partition function evaluations of Ising spin glasses on conventional finite lattices of varying sizes. A large number of random bond configurations are probed in the framework of quenched averages. This study is motivated by the relationship between hierarchical lattice models whose partition function zeros fall on Julia sets and chaotic renormalization flows in such models with frustration, and by the possible connection of the latter with spin glass behaviour. In any finite volume, the simultaneous distribution of the zeros of all partition functions can be viewed as part of the more general problem of finding the location of all the zeros of a certain class of random polynomials with positive integer coefficients. Some aspects of this problem have been studied in various branches of mathematics, and we show how polynomial mappings which are used in graph theory to classify graphs, may help in characterizing the distribution of zeros. We finally discuss the possible limiting set as the volume is sent to infinity.

Smooth Non-Abelian Bosonization

We present an extension of ``smooth bosonization'' to the non-Abelian case. We construct an enlarged theory containing both bosonic and fermionic fields which exhibits a local chiral gauge symmetry. A gauge fixing function depending on one real parameter allows us to interpolate smoothly between a purely fermionic and a purely bosonic representation. The procedure is, in the special case of bosonization, complementary to the approach based on duality.

Generalized Lagrangian Master Equations

We discuss the geometry of the Lagrangian quantization scheme based on (generalized) Schwinger-Dyson BRST symmetries. When a certain set of ghost fields are integrated out of the path integral, we recover the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism, now extended to arbitrary functional measures for the classical fields. Keeping the ghosts reveals the crucial role played by a natural connection on the space of fields.

Screening and Deconfinement of Sources in Finite Temperature SU(2) Lattice Gauge Theory

Deconfinement and screening of higher-representation sources in finite-temperature $SU(2)$ lattice gauge theory is investigated by both analytical and numerical means. The effective Polyakov-line action at strong coupling is simulated by an efficient cluster-updating Monte Carlo algorithm for the case of $d\!=\!4$ dimensions. The results compare very favourably with an improved mean-field solution. The limit $d\!\to\!\infty$ of the $SU(2)$ theory is shown to be highly singular as far as critical behaviour is concerned. In that limit the leading amplitudes of higher representation Polyakov lines vanish at strong coupling, and subleading exponents become dominant. Each of the higher-representation sources then effectively carry with them their own critical exponents.

Qualitons from QCD

Qualitons, topological excitations with the quantum numbers of quarks, may provide an accurate description of what is meant by constituent quarks in QCD. Their existence hinges crucially on an effective Lagrangian description of QCD in which a pseudoscalar colour-octet of fields enters as a new variable. We show here how such new fields may be extracted from the fundamental QCD Lagrangian using the gauge-symmetric collective field technique.

Collective Fields for QCD

A gauge-symmetric approach to effective Lagrangians is described with special emphasis on derivations of effective low-energy Lagrangians from QCD. The examples we discuss are based on exact rewritings of cut-off QCD in terms of new collective degrees of freedom. These cut-off Lagrangians are thus ``effective'' in the sense that they explicitly contain some of the physical long-distance degrees of freedom from the outset.(Talk presented by P.H. Damgaard at the workshop on ``Quantum Field Theoretical Methods in High Energy Physics'', Kyffhauser, Germany, Sept. 1993. To appear in those proceedings).

Gauge-Symmetric Approach to Effective Lagrangians: The η' Meson from QCD

We present a general scheme for extracting effective degrees of freedom from an underlying fundamental Lagrangian, through a series of well-defined transformations in the functional integral of the cut-off theory. This is done by introducing collective fields in a gauge-symmetric manner. Through appropriate gauge fixings of this symmetry one can remove long-distance degrees of freedom from the underlying theory, replacing them by the collective fields. Applying this technique to QCD, we set out to extract the long-distance dynamics in the pseudoscalar flavour singlet sector through a gauging (and subsequent gauge fixing) of the $U(1)_A$ flavour symmetry which is broken by the anomaly. By this series of exact transformations of a cut-off generating functional for QCD, we arrive at a theory describing the long-distance physics of a pseudoscalar flavour singlet meson coupled to the residual quark-gluon degrees of freedom. As examples of how known low-energy physics can be reproduced in this formulation, we rederive the Witten-Veneziano relation between the $η'$ mass and the topological susceptibility, now for any value of the number of colours $N_c$.

Master Equations for Extended Lagrangian BRST Symmetries

Starting from the requirement that a Lagrangian field theory be invariant under both Schwinger-Dyson BRST and Schwinger-Dyson anti-BRST symmetry, we derive the BRST--anti-BRST analogue of the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism. This is done through standard Lagrangian gauge fixing respecting the extended BRST symmetry. The solutions of the resulting Master Equation and the gauge-fixing procedure for the quantum action can be brought into forms that coincide with those obtained earlier on algebraic grounds by Batalin, Lavrov and Tyutin.

Origin of Antifields in the Batalin-Vilkovisky Lagrangian Formalism

The antifields of the Batalin-Vilkovisky Lagrangian quantization are standard antighosts of certain collective fields. These collective fields ensure that Schwinger-Dyson equations are satisfied as a consequence of the gauge symmetry algebra. The associated antibracket and its canonical structure appear naturally if one integrates out the corresponding ghost fields. An analogous Master Equation for the action involving these ghosts follows from the requirement that the path integral gives rise to the correct Schwinger-Dyson equations.

Smooth Bosonization II: The Massive Case

The (1+1)-dimensional bosonization relations for fermionic mass terms are derived by choosing a specific gauge in an enlarged gauge-invariant theory containing both fermionic and bosonic fields. The fermionic part of the generating functional subject to the gauge constraint can be cast into the form of a strongly coupled Schwinger model, which can be solved exactly. The resulting bosonic theory coupled to the scalar sources then exhibits directly the bosonic counterparts of the fermionic scalar and pseudoscalar mass densities.
