Self-Organized States in Cellular Automata: Exact Solution

The spatial structure, fluctuations as well as all state probabilities of self-organized (steady) states of cellular automata can be found (almost) exactly and {\em explicitly} from their Markovian dynamics. The method is shown on an example of a natural sand pile model with a gradient threshold.

Asymptotic Theory of Particle Trapping in Coherent Nonlinear Alfven Waves

A fully nonlinear, time-asymptotic theory of resonant particle trapping in large-amplitude quasi-parallel Alfven waves is presented. The effect of trapped particles on the nonlinear dynamics of quasi-stationary Alfvenic discontinuities and coherent Alfven waves is highly non-trivial and forces to a significant departure of the theory from the conventional DNLS and KNLS equation models. The virial theorem is used to determine the time-asymptotic distribution function.

Towards a Simple Model of Compressible Alfvenic Turbulence

A simple model collisionless, dissipative, compressible MHD (Alfvenic) turbulence in a magnetized system is investigated. In contrast to more familiar paradigms of turbulence, dissipation arises from Landau damping, enters via nonlinearity, and is distributed over all scales. The theory predicts that two different regimes or phases of turbulence are possible, depending on the ratio of steepening to damping coefficient (m_1/m_2). For strong damping (|m_1/m_2|<1), a regime of smooth, hydrodynamic turbulence is predicted. For |m_1/m_2|>1, steady state turbulence does not exist in the hydrodynamic limit. Rather, spikey, small scale structure is predicted.

Dissipative Dynamics of Collisionless Nonlinear Alfven Wave Trains

The nonlinear dynamics of collisionless Alfven trains, including resonant particle effects is studied using the kinetic nonlinear Schroedinger (KNLS) equation model. Numerical solutions of the KNLS reveal the dynamics of Alfven waves to be sensitive to the sense of polarization as well as the angle of propagation with respect to the ambient magnetic field. The combined effects of both wave nonlinearity and Landau damping result in the evolutionary formation of stationaryOA S- and arc-polarized directional and rotational discontinuities. These waveforms are freqently observed in the interplanetary plasma.

Resonance Broadening Induced Nonlinear Saturation of Kinetic Alfven Turbulence in the Interplanetary Plasma

The saturation of ion cyclotron Alfven turbulence excited by beam particles is investigated using resonance broadening theory. The stochastic scattering which decorrelates particles, includes both random acceleration by electric fields and a turbulent magnetic mirroring effect. Turbulent mirroring is shown to yield non-Gaussian corrections to the orbits even if the random electric and magnetic fields are Gaussian. The predicted steady-state turbulence level exhibits a peaked anglular distribution, with a maximum near Theta ~ 60 degrees.

Fluid Models for Kinetic Effects on Coherent Nonlinear Alfven Waves. I. Fundamental Theory

Collisionless regime kinetic models for coherent nonlinear Alfven wave dynamics are studied using fluid moment equations with an approximate closure anzatz. Resonant particle effects are modelled by incorporating an additional term representing dissipation akin to parallel heat conduction. Unlike collisional dissipation, parallel heat conduction is presented by an integral operator. The modified derivative nonlinear Schrodinger equation thus has a spatially nonlocal nonlinear term describing the long-time evolution of the envelope of parallel-propagating Alfven waves, as well. Coefficients in the nonlinear terms are free of the 1/(1-beta) singularity usually encountered in previous analyses, and have very a simple form which clarifies the physical processes governing the large amplitude Alfvenic nonlinear dynamics. The nonlinearity appears via coupling of an Alfvenic mode to a kinetic ion-acoustic mode. Damping of the nonlinear Alfven wave appears via strong Landau damping of the ion-acoustic wave when the electron-to-ion temperature ratio is close to unity. For a (slightly) obliquely propagating wave, there are finite Larmor radius corrections in the dynamical equation. This effect depends on the angle of wave propagation relative to B_0 and vanishes for the limit of strictly parallel propagation. Explicit magnetic perturbation envelope equations amenable to further analysis and numerical solution are obtained. Implications of these models for collisionless shock dynamics are discussed.

Fluid Models for Kinetic Effects on Coherent Nonlinear Alfven Waves. II. Numerical Solutions

The influence of various kinetic effects (e.g. Landau damping, diffusive and collisional dissipation, and finite Larmor radius terms) on the nonlinear evolution of finite amplitude Alfvenic wave trains in a finite-beta environment is systematically investigated using a novel, kinetic nonlinear Schrodinger (KNLS) equation. The dynamics of Alfven waves is sensitive to the sense of polarization as well as the angle of propagation with respect to the ambient magnetic field. Numerical solution for the case with Landau damping reveals the formation of dissipative structures, which are quasi-stationary, S-polarized directional (and rotational) discontinuities which self-organize from parallel propagating, linearly polarized waves. Parallel propagating circularly polarized packets evolve to a few circularly polarized Alfven harmonics on large scales. Stationary arc-polarized rotational discontinuities form from obliquely propagating waves. Collisional dissipation, even if weak, introduces enhanced wave damping when beta is very close to unity. Cyclotron motion effects on resonant particle interactions introduce cyclotron resonance into the nonlinear Alfven wave dynamics.

Theory of the Spatio-Temporal Dynamics of Transport Bifurcations

The development and time evolution of a transport barrier in a magnetically confined plasma with non-monotonic, nonlinear dependence of the anomalous flux on mean gradients is analyzed. Upon consideration of both the spatial inhomogeneity and the gradient nonlinearity of the transport coefficient, we find that the transition develops as a bifurcation front with radially propagating discontinuity in local gradient. The spatial location of the transport barrier as a function of input flux is calculated. The analysis indicates that for powers slightly above threshold, the barrier location $x_b(t) \sim ( D_n t (P-P_c)/P_c)^{1/2},$ where $P_c$ is the local transition power threshold and $D_n$ is the neoclassical diffusivity . This result suggests a simple explanation of the high disruptivity observed in reversed shear plasmas. The basic conclusions of this theory are insensitive to the details of the local transport model.

Suppression of Cross-Field Transport of a Passive Scalar in Two-Dimensional Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence

The theory of passive scalar transport in two dimensional turbulent fluids is generalized to the case of 2D MHD. Invariance of the cross correlation of scalar concentration and magnetic potential produces a novel contribution to the concentration flux. This pinch effect is proportional to the mean potential gradient, and is shown to drastically reduce transport of the passive scalar across the mean magnetic field when . Transport parallel to the mean magnetic field is unchanged. Implications for models of transport in turbulent magnetofluids are discussed. PAC NOS. 47.25.Jn, 47.65.+a
