Breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein Relation in Supercooled Water

Supercooled water exhibits a breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation between the diffusion constant $D$ and the alpha relaxation time $τ_α$. For water simulated with the TIP5P and ST2 potentials, we find that the temperature of the decoupling of diffusion and alpha relaxation correlates with the temperature of the maximum in specific heat that corresponds to crossing the Widom line $T_W(P)$. Specifically, we find that our results for $Dτ_α/T$ collapse onto a single master curve if temperature is replaced by $T-T_W(P)$, where $T_W(P)$ is the temperature where the constant-pressure specific heat achieves a maximum. Also, we find agreement between our ST2 simulations and experimental values of $Dτ_α/T$. We further find that the size of the mobile molecule clusters (dynamical heterogeneities) increases sharply near $T_W(P)$. Moreover, our calculations of mobile particle cluster size $ _w$ for different pressures, where $t^*$ is the time for which the mobile particle cluster size is largest, also collapse onto a single master curve if $T$ is replaced by $T-T_W(P)$. The crossover to a more locally structured low density liquid (LDL) environment as $T\to T_W(P)$ appears to be well correlated with both the breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation and the growth of dynamic heterogeneities.

Relation Between the Widom line and the Strong-Fragile Dynamic Crossover in Systems with a Liquid-Liquid Phase Transition

We investigate, for two water models displaying a liquid-liquid critical point, the relation between changes in dynamic and thermodynamic anomalies arising from the presence of the liquid-liquid critical point. We find a correlation between the dynamic fragility transition and the locus of specific heat maxima $C_P^{\rm max}$ (``Widom line'') emanating from the critical point. Our findings are consistent with a possible relation between the previously hypothesized liquid-liquid phase transition and the transition in the dynamics recently observed in neutron scattering experiments on confined water. More generally, we argue that this connection between $C_P^{\rm max}$ and dynamic crossover is not limited to the case of water, a hydrogen bond network forming liquid, but is a more general feature of crossing the Widom line. Specifically, we also study the Jagla potential, a spherically-symmetric two-scale potential known to possess a liquid-liquid critical point, in which the competition between two liquid structures is generated by repulsive and attractive ramp interactions.

Spatial Correlations of Mobility and Immobility in a Glassforming Lennard-Jones Liquid

Using extensive molecular dynamics simulations of an equilibrium, glass-forming Lennard-Jones mixture, we characterize in detail the local atomic motions. We show that spatial correlations exist among particles undergoing extremely large (``mobile'') or extremely small (``immobile'') displacements over a suitably chosen time interval. The immobile particles form the cores of relatively compact clusters, while the mobile particles move cooperatively and form quasi-one-dimensional, string-like clusters. The strength and length scale of the correlations between mobile particles are found to grow strongly with decreasing temperature, and the mean cluster size appears to diverge at the mode-coupling critical temperature. We show that these correlations in the particle displacements are related to equilibrium fluctuations in the local potential energy and local composition.
