Swift observations of Mrk\,421 in selected epochs. iii. Extreme x-ray timing/spectral properties and multiwavelength lognormality in 2015\,December--2018\,April

We present the results from the timing and spectral study of Mrk\,421 based mainly on the \emph{Swift} data in the X-ray energy range obtained during the time interval 2015\,December--2018\,April. The most extreme X-ray flaring activity on the long-term, daily and intraday timescales was observed during the 2-month period which started in 2017\,December when the 0.3--10\,keV flux exceeded a level of 5$\times$10$^{-9}$erg\,cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$, recorded only twice previously. While the TeV-band and X-ray variabilities mostly were correlated, the source often varied in a complex manner in the MeV--GeV and radio--UV energy ranges, indicating that the multifrequency emission of Mrk\,421 could not be always generated in a single zone. The longer-term flares at X-rays and $γ$-rays showed a lognormal character, possibly indicating a variability imprint of the accretion disk onto the jet. A vast majority of the 0.3--10\,keV spectra were consistent with the log-parabolic model, showing relatively low spectral curvature and correlations between the different spectral parameters, predicted in the case of the first and second-order Fermi processes. The position of the synchrotron spectral energy distribution (SED) peak showed an extreme variability on diverse timescales between the energies $E_{\rm p}$$<$0.1\,keV and $E_{\rm p}$$>$15\,keV, with 15\% of the spectra peaking at hard X-rays and was related to the peak height as $S_{\rm p}$$\varpropto$$E^α_{\rm p}$ with $α$$\sim$0.6, which is expected for the transition from Kraichnan-type turbulence into the \textquotedblleft hard-sphere\textquotedblright~ one. The 0.3--300\,GeV spectra showed the features of the hadronic contribution, jet-star interaction and upscatter in the Klein-Nishina regime in different time intervals.

Wavelet Analysis of AGN X-Ray Time Series: A QPO in 3C 273?

Quasi-periodic signals have yielded important constraints on the masses of black holes in galactic X-ray binaries, and here we extend this to active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We employ a wavelet technique to analyze 19 observations of 10 AGNs obtained with the XMM-Newton EPIC pn camera. We report the detection of a candidate 3.3 ks quasi period in 3C 273. If this period represents an orbital timescale originating near a last stable orbit of 3Rs, it implies a central black hole mass of 7.3x10^6 Msun. For a maximally rotating black hole with a last stable orbit of 0.6Rs, a central black hole mass of 8.1x10^7 Msun is implied. Both of these estimates are substantially lower than previous reverberation-mapping results, which place the central black hole mass of 3C 273 at about 2.35 x10^8 Msun. Assuming that this reverberation mass is correct, the X-ray quasi period would be caused by a higher order oscillatory mode of the accretion disk.

Relativistic Jet Response to Precession and Wave-Wave Interactions

Three dimensional numerical simulations of the response of a Lorentz factor 2.5 relativistic jet to precession at three different frequencies have been performed. Low, moderate and high precession frequencies have been chosen relative to the maximally unstable frequency predicted by a Kelvin-Helmholtz stability analysis. Transverse motion and velocity decreases as the precession frequency increases. Although helical displacement of the jet decreases in amplitude as the precession frequency increases, a helical shock is generated in the medium external to the jet at all precession frequencies. Complex pressure and velocity structure inside the jet is shown to be produced by a combination of the helical surface and first body modes predicted by a normal mode analysis of the relativistic hydrodynamic equations. The surface and first body mode have different wave speed and wavelength, are launched in phase by the periodic precession, and exhibit beat patterns in synthetic emission images. Wave (pattern) speeds range from $0.41c$ to $0.86c$ but beat patterns remain stationary. Thus, we find a mechanism that can produce differentially moving and stationary features in the jet.
