Gluonic Pole Cross Sections and Single Spin Asymmetries in Hadron-Hadron Scattering

The gauge-links connecting the parton field operators in the hadronic matrix elements appearing in the transverse momentum dependent distribution functions give rise to T-odd effects. Due to the process-dependence of the gauge-links the T-odd distribution functions appear with different pre-factors. A consequence is that in the description of single spin asymmetries the parton distribution and fragmentation functions are convoluted with gluonic pole cross sections rather than the basic partonic cross sections. In this paper we calculate the gluonic pole cross sections encountered in single spin asymmetries in hadron-hadron scattering. The case of back-to-back pion production in polarized proton-proton scattering is worked out explicitly. It is shown how T-odd gluon distribution functions originating from gluonic pole matrix elements appear in twofold.

Single-Transverse Spin Asymmetry in Dijet Correlations at Hadron Colliders

We present a phenomenological study of the single-transverse spin asymmetry in azimuthal correlations of two jets produced nearly "back-to-back" in pp collisions at RHIC. We properly take into account the initial- and final-state interactions of partons that can generate this asymmetry in QCD hard-scattering. Using distribution functions fitted to the existing single-spin data, we make predictions for various weighted single-spin asymmetries in dijet correlations that are now readily testable at RHIC.

Sivers Effect Asymmetries in Hadronic Collisions

We argue that weighted azimuthal single spin asymmetries in back-to-back jet or pion production in polarized proton-proton scattering can be written as convolutions of universal distribution and fragmentation functions with gluonic pole cross sections as hard functions. Gluonic pole cross sections are gauge-invariant weighted sums of Feynman diagrams. The weight factors are a direct consequence of the (diagram-dependence of) gauge links. The best known consequence of the gauge links is the generation of the Sivers effect that is a source for single-spin asymmetries. Moreover, due to the dependence of the gauge links on the color-flow of the hard diagram the Sivers effect in SIDIS enters with opposite sign as it does in Drell-Yan scattering. The weight factors in the gluonic pole cross sections are the appropriate generalizations to more complicated processes of this relative sign difference. Furthermore, it is argued that the gluon-Sivers effect appears in twofold.

Universality of Single Spin Asymmetries in Hard Processes

We discuss the use of time reversal symmetry in the classification of parton correlators. Specifically, we consider the role of (small) intrinsic transverse momenta in these correlators and the determination of the proper color gauge link. The transverse momentum weighted correlators in hard processes can be expressed as a product of universal gluonic pole matrix elements and gluonic pole cross sections.

The Construction of Gauge-Links in Arbitrary Hard Processes

Transverse momentum dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions are described by hadronic matrix elements of bilocal products of field operators off the light-cone. These bilocal products contain gauge-links, as required by gauge-invariance. The gauge-links are path-ordered exponentials connecting the field operators along a certain integration path. This integration path is process-dependent, depending specifically on the short-distance partonic subprocess. In this paper we present the technical details needed in the calculation of the gauge-links and a calculational scheme is provided to obtain the gauge-invariant distribution and fragmentation correlators corresponding to a given partonic subprocess.

Single spin asymmetries in hadron-hadron collisions

We study weighted azimuthal single spin asymmetries in hadron-hadron scattering using the diagrammatic approach at leading order and assuming factorization. The effects of the intrinsic transverse momenta of the partons are taken into account. We show that the way in which $T$-odd functions, such as the Sivers function, appear in these processes does not merely involve a sign flip when compared with semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, such as in the case of the Drell-Yan process. Expressions for the weighted scattering cross sections in terms of distribution and fragmentation functions folded with hard cross sections are obtained by introducing modified hard cross sections, referred to as gluonic pole cross sections.

The Uniqueness of the $Θ^+$ Pentaquark

The existence of the $Θ^+$ pentaquark requires a peculiar mechanism to explain its stability. Looking at quark clusters, notably diquark and triquark configurations, such a mechanism may be found in the color-magnetic interaction between quarks. It is possible to understand why the $Θ^+$ is unique. Chiral dynamics, in particular the ease of pion emission, will render other members of the same flavor antidecuplet, such as the $Ξ^{--}$ very unstable.

Gauge Link Structure in Quark-Quark Correlators in hard processes

Distribution functions in hard processes can be described by quark-quark correlators, nonlocal matrix elements of quark fields. Color gauge invariance requires inclusion of appropriate gauge links in these correlators. For transverse momentum dependent distribution functions, in particular important for describing T-odd effects in hard processes, we find that new link structures containing loops can appear in abelian and non-abelian theories. In transverse moments, e.g. measured in azimuthal asymmetries, these loops may enhance the contribution of gluonic poles. Some explicit results for the link structure are given in high-energy leptoproduction and hadron-hadron scattering.

Universality of T-odd effects in single spin and azimuthal asymmetries

We analyze the transverse momentum dependent distribution and fragmentation functions in space-like and time-like hard processes involving at least two hadrons, in particular 1-particle inclusive leptoproduction, the Drell-Yan process and two-particle inclusive hadron production in electron-positron annihilation. As is well-known, transverse momentum dependence allows for the appearance of unsuppressed single spin azimuthal asymmetries, such as Sivers and Collins asymmetries. Recently, Belitsky, Ji and Yuan obtained fully color gauge invariant expressions for the relevant matrix elements appearing in these asymmetries at leading order in an expansion in the inverse hard scale. We rederive these results and extend them to observables at the next order in this expansion. We observe that at leading order one retains a probability interpretation, contrary to a claim in the literature and show the direct relation between the Sivers effect in single spin asymmetries and the Qiu-Sterman mechanism. We also study fragmentation functions, where the process dependent gauge link structure of the correlators is not the only source of T-odd observables and discuss the implications for universality.

Estimate of the Collins function in a chiral invariant approach

We estimate the Collins function at a low energy scale by calculating the fragmentation of a quark into a pion at the one-loop level in the chiral invariant model of Manohar and Georgi. We give a useful parametrization of our results and we briefly discuss different spin and/or azimuthal asymmetries containing the Collins function and measurable in semi-inclusive DIS and e+ e- annihilation

Double-spin cos(phi) Asymmetry in Semi-inclusive Electroproduction

We consider the double-spin cos(phi) asymmetry for pion electroproduction in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarized leptons off longitudinally polarized protons. We estimate the size of the asymmetry in the approximation where all twist-3 interaction-dependent distribution and fragmentation functions are set to zero. In that approximation at HERMES kinematics a sizable negative cos(phi) double-spin asymmetry for pi+ electroproduction is predicted.

Estimate of the Collins fragmentation function in a chiral invariant approach

We predict the features of the Collins function, which describes the fragmentation of a transversely polarized quark into an unpolarized hadron, by modeling the fragmentation process at a low energy scale. We use the chiral invariant approach of Manohar and Georgi, where constituent quarks and Goldstone bosons are considered as effective degrees of freedom in the non-perturbative regime of QCD. To test the approach we calculate the unpolarized fragmentation function and the transverse momentum distribution of a produced hadron, both of which are described reasonably well. In the case of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, our estimate of the Collins function in connection with the transversity distribution gives rise to a transverse single spin asymmetry of the order of 10%, supporting the idea of measuring the transversity distribution of the nucleon in this way. In the case of e+ e- annihilation into two hadrons, our model predicts a Collins azimuthal asymmetry of about 5%.

Azimuthal and spin asymmetries in DIS

In these lectures I want to discuss how the structure functions in deep inelastic scattering relate to quark and gluon correlation functions. In particular we will consider the issue of intrinsic transverse momenta of quarks, which becomes important in processes like 1-particle inclusive leptoproduction. Some examples of cross sections and asymmetries, in particular in polarized scattering processes are discussed. We also discuss the operator structure for azimuthal asymmetries and their evolution.

Azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive leptoproduction

We point out the role of intrinsic transverse momentum of partons in the study of azimuthal asymmetries in deep-inelastic 1-particle inclusive leptoproduction. Leading asymmetries often appear in combination with spin asymmetries. This leads not only to transverse momentum dependence in the parton distribution functions, but also to functions beyond the ones known from inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). We use Lorentz invariance and the QCD equations of motion to study the evolution of functions that appear at leading (zeroth) order in a 1/Q expansion in azimuthal asymmetries. This includes the evolution equation of the Collins fragmentation function. The moments of these functions are matrix elements of known twist two and twist three operators. We give the evolution in the large $N_c$ limit, restricted to the non-singlet case for the chiral-even functions.

Positivity bounds on spin-one distribution and fragmentation functions

We establish a connection between the distribution functions of quarks in spin-one hadrons and the helicity matrix for forward scattering of antiquarks off spin-one hadrons. From positivity of this matrix we obtain inequality relations among the distribution functions. Analogous relations hold also for fragmentation functions. The bounds we obtained can be used to constrain estimates of unknown functions, occurring in particular in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering or e+ e- annihilation with vector mesons in the final state.
