Quark transverse momentum in hard scattering processes

The role of transverse momentum of quarks in semi-inclusive leptoproduction will be discussed. It involves generalized distribution and fragmentation functions which depend on both the longitudinal lightcone momentum fraction of the quarks and on the transverse momentum. Constraints on these functions and relations between them arise as a consequence of the QCD equation of motion for the quark fields, Lorentz invariance and of C, P, and T invariance of the strong interactions. Experimentally one has access to the functions for instance in measurements of azimuthal asymmetries in hard processes.

Longitudinal quark polarization in transversely polarized nucleons

Accounting for transverse momenta of the quarks, a longitudinal quark spin asymmetry exists in a transversely polarized nucleon target. The relevant leading quark distribution $g_{1T}(x,k_T^2)$ can be measured in the semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. The average $k_T^2$ weighted distribution function $g^{(1)}_{1T}$ can be obtained directly from the inclusive measurement of $g_2$.

Twist-three distributions and their appearance in the doubly-polarized Drell-Yan process

The twist-three distributions $g_2(x)$ and $h_2(x)$ are defined as quark-field matrix elements between polarized hadron states. They can be written in terms of quark-mass and gluonic operators, after which the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule for $g_2$ can be derived and a similar sum rule for $h_2$. Their role in the Drell-Yan double-spin asymmetry $A_{LT}$ is explained.

Transverse spin and transverse momenta in hard scattering processes

Inclusive and semi-inclusive deep inelastic leptoproduction offers possibilities to study details of the quark and gluon structure of hadrons. In many of these experiments polarization is an essential ingredient. We also emphasize the dependence on transverse momenta of the quarks, which leads to azimuthal asymmetries in the produced hadrons.

Opportunities in (semi-)inclusive deep inelastic scattering

Modelling distribution functions and fragmentation functions

We present examples for the calculation of the distribution and fragmentation functions using the representation in terms of non-local matrix elements of quark field operators. As specific examples, we use a simple spectator model to estimate the leading twist quark distribution functions and the fragmentation functions for a quark into a nucleon or a pion.

Exchange Current Corrections to Neutrino--Nucleus Scattering

Relativistic exchange current corrections to neutrino--nucleus cross sections are presented assuming non--vanishing strange quark form factors for the constituent nucleons. For charged current processes the exchange current corrections can lower the impulse approximation results by 10\% while these corrections are found to be sensitive to both the nuclear density and the strange quark axial form factor of the nucleon for neutral current processes. Implications on the LSND experiment to determine this form factor are discussed.

On the Dirac quantization condition

We revisit the Dirac quantization condition for string-like and string-less (but multi-valued) magnetic monopole potentials. In doing so we allow for an {\it a priori} different coupling ${\tilde e}$ associated with the longitudinal components of the gauge potential. By imposing physical criteria in the choice of the longitudinal--transverse decomposition we show that -in contrast to some recent claims- the `unphysical' coupling $\tilde e$ does not appear in the quantization condition.

Probing transverse quark polarization in deep-inelastic leptoproduction

The azimuthal dependence of hadrons produced in lepton scattering off a polarized hadron probes the quark transverse-spin distributions. In the calculation of the asymmetries, transverse momenta of quarks in the distribution and fragmentation functions must be incorporated. In addition to the $\sin (ϕ+ ϕ_S)$ asymmetry for transversely polarized hadrons, known as the Collins effect, we find $\sin 2ϕ$ asymmetries for both transversely and longitudinally polarized hadrons.

Evolution of the spin of the nucleon

We compare momentum sum rules from unpolarized electroproduction and the spin sum rule for $g_1$ in polarized electroproduction, and their $Q^2$ evolution in the framework of the operator product expansion. Second order effects in $α_s$ are included. We show that in comparing the evolution of the spin sum rule with the momentum sum rule one is not overly sensitive to using first or second order, even when going to the extreme low $Q^2$ limit in which gluons carry no momentum. Our results show that in that limit there is no need to include any contribution of strange quarks.

Polarized twist-three distributions $g_T$ and $h_L$ and the role of intrinsic transverse momentum

In a nonstandard way we split up the polarized quark distributions $g_T$ and $h_L$ into their twist-two, quark-mass, and interaction-dependent parts, emphasizing the sensitivity to quark intrinsic transverse momentum. We show how to derive the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule in this approach and derive a similar sum rule for the chiral-odd distribution $h_2$. The effect of intrinsic transverse momentum in experimental observables is illustrated in the calculation of the ${\cal O}(1/Q)$ double-spin asymmetry $A_{LT}$ in Drell-Yan scattering.

Intrinsic transverse momentum and the polarized Drell-Yan process

In this paper we study the cross section at leading order in $1/Q$ for polarized Drell-Yan scattering at measured lepton-pair transverse momentum $Q_T$. We find that for a hadron with spin $1/2$ the quark content at leading order is described by six distribution functions for each flavor, which depend on both the lightcone momentum fraction $x$, and the quark transverse momentum $\bbox{k}_T^2$. These functions are illustrated for a free-quark ensemble. The cross sections for both longitudinal and transverse polarizations are expressed in terms of convolution integrals over the distribution functions.

Time Reversal Odd Fragmentation Functions in Semi-Inclusive Scattering of Polarized Leptons from Unpolarized Hadrons

Semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of polarized leptons off hadrons enables one to measure the antisymmetric part of the hadron tensor. For unpolarized hadrons this piece is odd under time reversal. In deep inelastic scattering it shows up as a $\langle \sin ϕ\rangle$ asymmetry for the produced hadrons. This asymmetry can be expressed as the product of a twist-three "hadron $\rightarrow$ quark" distribution function and a time reversal odd twist-two "quark $\rightarrow$ hadron" fragmentation function. This fragmentation function can only be measured for nonzero transverse momenta of the produced hadron.

Quark correlation functions in deep inelastic semi-inclusive processes

We investigate one-particle semi-inclusive processes in lepton-hadron scattering. In unpolarized scattering order $Q^{-1}$ corrections appear only when transverse momenta are detected. We consider the twist two and three matrix elements and calculate the semi-inclusive structure functions in terms of quark correlation functions. We find that at twist three level not only the standard quark distribution and fragmentation function contribute, but also two new transverse "profile functions". We demonstrate explicit gauge invariance of the hadronic tensor at the twist three level. The results of our approach are used to calculate expressions for some cross sections for semi-inclusive processes.
