Measurement of the $B^0$ lifetime using fully reconstructed hadronic decays in the 2019 Belle II dataset

This document presents the measurement of $B^0$ meson lifetimes using the 2019 Belle II dataset that corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $8.7 \pm 0.2$ fb$^{-1}$. Each candidate is fully reconstructed with hadronic decay final states on the signal side, while the rest-of-event technique allows to infer the decay vertex position on the other (tag) side. $B^0$ lifetime is extracted from an unbinned maximum likelihood fit to the distribution of the difference between the signal side $B^0$ candidate and the tag side decay times. The measured lifetime is $τ_{B^0} = 1.48 \pm 0.28 \pm 0.06 $ ps, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Search for an invisibly decaying $Z^{\prime}$ boson at Belle II in $e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- (e^{\pm} μ^{\mp})$ plus missing energy final states

Theories beyond the standard model often predict the existence of an additional neutral boson, the $Z^{\prime}$. Using data collected by the Belle II experiment during 2018 at the SuperKEKB collider, we perform the first searches for the invisible decay of a $Z^{\prime}$ in the process $e^+ e^- \to μ^+ μ^- Z^{\prime}$ and of a lepton-flavor-violating $Z^{\prime}$ in $e^+ e^- \to e^{\pm} μ^{\mp} Z^{\prime}$. We do not find any excess of events and set 90\% credibility level upper limits on the cross sections of these processes. We translate the former, in the framework of an $L_μ-L_τ$ theory, into upper limits on the $Z^{\prime}$ coupling constant at the level of $5 \times 10^{-2}$ -- $1$ $M_{Z^\prime}\leq 6$ GeV/$c^2$.

Effect of variations in the gas mixture compositions on the timing and charge of glass RPC

The India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) is a project aimed at building a large underground laboratory to explore the Earth's mater effects on the atmospheric neutrinos in multi-GeV range. INO will host a 50 kton magnetized iron calorimeter detector (ICAL) in which Resistive Plate Chambers(RPCs) will be the active detector elements. In ICAL, 28,800 glass RPCs of 2 m $\times$ 2 m size will be operated in the avalanche mode. A small variation in the compositions of ionizing gaseous medium in the RPC affects its performance. Study of the charge distribution of the RPC at different gas compositions is necessary to optimize the gas mixture. An RPC made with glass plates of dimension 30 cm $\times$ 30 cm was operated in avalanche mode with a gas mixture of $C_2H_2F_4$/$iC_4H_{10}$/$SF_6$. We have studied the performance of these RPCs at the same ambient conditions. The percentages of the $iC_4H_{10}$ or $SF_6$ were varied and its effect on the performance of RPC were studied. The study of the charge distribution and time resolution of the RPC signals at different gas compositions is presented in this paper.

Measurement of the integrated luminosity of the Phase 2 data of the Belle II experiment

From April to July 2018, a data sample at the peak energy of the $Υ(4S)$ resonance was collected with the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider. This is the first data sample of the Belle~II experiment. Using Bhabha and digamma events, we measure the integrated luminosity of the data sample to be ($496.3 \pm 0.3 \pm 3.0$)~pb$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This work provides a basis for future luminosity measurements at Belle~II.

Effect of glass thickness variations on the performance of RPC detectors

The India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) is planning to build a magnetized iron calorimeter detector (ICAL) in which Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) will be the active detector elements. A study of the performance of RPCs, made using electrodes of various thicknesses, is pivotal in optimizing the design parameters of the ICAL RPCs. We fabricated RPCs with glasses of various thicknesses and studied their performance in the same environmental conditions. A study of detector efficiency, noise rate, time resolution and charge distribution is presented in this paper.

Effect of electrical properties of glass electrodes on the performance of RPC detectors for the INO-ICAL experiment

The India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) collaboration has chosen glass Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) as the active detector elements for the Iron Calorimeter (ICAL) experiment. In the present work, we study the electrical properties such as bulk resistivity and relative permittivity of the glasses from two different manufacturers and compared the performances of RPCs built using these glasses. We conclude that the glass electrodes with larger bulk resistivy and permittivity are better suited for manufacturing RPCs for the ICAL experiment, as these detectors could be operated at lower bias currents and voltages, and produce better time resolutions compared to those built with glass electrodes of smaller bulk resistivity and permittivity.

Effect of water vapor on the performance of glass RPCs in avalanche mode operation

We studied the effect of water vapor on the performance of glass Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) in the avalanche mode operation. Controlled and calibrated amount of water vapor was added to the RPC gas mixture that has C$_2$H$_2$F$_4$ as the major component. The deterioration in the performance of RPC was observed while operating with wet gas and recovered after switching to standard gas.

Study of glass properties as electrode for RPC

Operation and performance of the Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) mostly depend on the quality and characteristics of the electrode materials. The India-based Neutrino Observatory collaboration has chosen glass RPCs as the active detector elements for its Iron Calorimeter detector and is going to deploy RPCs in an unprecedented scale. Therefore, it is imperative that we study the electrode material aspects in detail. We report here, systematic characterization studies on the glasses from two manufacturers. RPC detectors were built using these glasses and performances of the same were compared with their material properties.

Experimental Results on Flavour Oscillations and CP-Violation

30 years ago M. Kobayashi and T. Masakawa (won the Nobel Prize in physics 2008 for their famous t heory), gave a theory to explaining CP violation. This theory predicted that large CP violation wou ld be observed in B mesons . In the last 10 years, Both the B-factories (babar at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, USA and Belle at KEK, Japan) have observed large CP violation as predicted by th e KM mechanism. The ground breaking experimental results of Flavor Oscillation and CP violation in B and D mesons are summarized and compared with the Standard Model expectations.
