Muon spin rotation measurements on RbEuFe$_{4}$As$_{4}$ under pressure

We report muon spin rotation and magnetization measurements on the magnetic superconductor RbEuFe$_{4}$As$_{4}$ under hydrostatic pressures up to 3.8 GPa. At ambient pressure, RbEuFe$_{4}$As$_{4}$ exhibits a superconducting transition at $T_{c} \approx$ 36.5 K and a magnetic transition at $T_{m} \approx$ 15 K below which the magnetic and the superconducting order coexist. With increasing pressure, $T_{c}$ decreases while $T_{m}$ and the ordered Eu magnetic moment increase. In contrast to iron-based superconductors with ordering Fe moments, the size of the ordered Eu moment is not proportional to $T_{m}$. The muon spin rotation signal is dominated by the magnetic response impeding the determination of the superconducting properties.

Investigations of the superconducting ground state of Zr$_{3} $Ir: Introducing a new noncentrosymmetric superconductor

Superconductivity in materials whose crystal structure lacks inversion symmetry is a prime candidate for unconventional superconductivity. A new noncentrosymmetric compound Zr$_{3}$Ir crystallizes in a tetragonal $ α$-V$_{3} $S structure. The magnetization, specific heat and muon spin rotation confirm s-wave superconductivity, having a transition temperature T$_{c}$ = 2.3 K. Muon spin relaxation confirms the preservation of time reversal symmetry in the superconducting ground state.

Muon spin rotation and relaxation in Pr$_{1-x}$Nd$_x$Os$_4$Sb$_{12}$: superconductivity and magnetism in Pr-rich alloys

The Pr-rich end of the alloy series Pr$_{1-x}$Nd$_x$Os$_4$Sb$_{12}$ has been studied using muon spin rotation and relaxation. The end compound PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ is an unconventional heavy-fermion superconductor, which exhibits a spontaneous magnetic field in the superconducting phase associated with broken time-reversal symmetry. No spontaneous field is observed in the Nd-doped alloys for x $>$ 0.05. The superfluid density is insensitive to Nd concentration, and no Nd$^{3+}$ static magnetism is found down to the lowest temperatures of measurement. Together with the slow suppression of the superconducting transition temperature with Nd doping, these results suggest anomalously weak coupling between Nd spins and conduction-band states.

Nodeless s-wave superconductivity in the α-Mn structure type noncentrosymmetric superconductor TaOs: A μSR study

Noncentrosymmetric superconductors can lead to a variety of exotic properties in the superconducting state such as line nodes, multigap behavior, and time-reversal symmetry breaking. In this paper, we report the properties of the new noncentrosymmetric superconductor TaOs, using muon spin relaxation and rotation measurements. It is shown using the zero-field muon experiment that TaOs preserve the time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. From the transverse field muon measurements, we extract the temperature dependence of $λ(T)$ which is proportional to the superfluid density. This data can be fit with a fully gapped s-wave model for $α$ = $Δ(0)/k_{B}T_{c}$ = 2.01 $\pm$ 0.02. Furthermore, the value of magnetic penetration depth is found to be 5919 $\pm$ 45 \textÅ, which is consistent with the value obtained from the bulk measurements.

Investigation of Superconducting Gap Structure in HfIrSi using muon spin relaxation/rotation

Appearance of strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is apparent in ternary equiatomic compounds with 5$d$-electrons due to the large atomic radii of transition metals. SOC plays a significant role in the emergence of unconventional superconductivity. Here we examined the superconducting state of HfIrSi using magnetization, specific heat, zero and transverse-field (ZF/TF) muon spin relaxation/rotation ($μ$SR) measurements. Superconductivity is observed at $T_\mathrm{C}$ = 3.6 K as revealed by specific heat and magnetization measurements. From the TF$-μ$SR analysis it is clear that superfluid density well described by an isotropic BCS type $s$-wave gap structure. Furthermore, from TF$-μ$SR data we have also estimated the superconducting carrier density $n_\mathrm{s}$ = 6.6 $\times$10$^{26}$m$^{-3}$, London penetration depth $λ_{L}(0)$ = 259.59 nm and effective mass $m^{*}$ = 1.57 $m_{e}$. Our zero-field muon spin relaxation data indicate no clear sign of spontaneous internal field below $T_\mathrm{C}$, which implies that the time-reversal symmetry is preserved in HfIrSi. Theoretical investigation suggests Hf and Ir atoms hybridize strongly along the $c$-axis of the lattice, which is responsible for the strong three-dimensionality of this system which screens the Coulomb interaction. As a result despite the presence of correlated $d$-electrons in this system, the correlation effect is weakened, promoting electron-phonon coupling to gain importance.

Probing the superconducting ground state of ZrIrSi: A $μ$SR study

The superconducting ground state of newly reported ZrIrSi is probed by means of $μ$SR technique along with resistivity measurement. The occurrence of superconductivity at $T_\mathrm{C}$ = 1.7 K is confirmed by resistivity measurement. ZF-$μ$SR study revealed that below $T_\mathrm{C}$, there is no spontaneous magnetic field in the superconducting state, indicates TRS is preserved in case of ZrIrSi. From TF-$μ$SR measurement, we have estimated the superfluid density as a function of temperature, which is described by an isotropic $s-$wave model with a superconducting gap $2Δ(0)/k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{C}$ = 5.1, indicates the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. {\it Ab-initio} electronic structure calculation indicates that there are four bands passing through the Fermi level, forming four Fermi surface pockets. We find that the low-energy bands are dominated by the $4d$-orbitals of transition metal Zr, with substantially lesser weight from the $5d$-orbitals of the Ir-atoms.

Ir 5$d$-band Derived Superconductivity in LaIr$_3$

We have studied the superconducting properties of LaIr$_3$ with a rhombohedral structure using magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. The zero-field cooled and field cooled susceptibility measurements exhibit a superconducting transition below $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 2.5 K. Magnetization measurements indicate bulk type-II superconductivity with upper critical field $μ_0H_{\mathrm{c2}}(0)$ = 3.84 T. Two successive transitions are observed in heat capacity data, one at $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 2.5 K and a second at 1.2 K below $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ whose origin remain unclear. The heat capacity jump reveals $ΔC$/$γT_{\mathrm{C}} \sim$ 1.0 which is lower than 1.43 expected for BCS weak coupling limit. Transverse field-$μ$SR measurements reveal a fully gapped $s-$wave superconductivity with 2$Δ(0)/k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 3.31, which is small compared to BCS value 3.56, suggesting weak coupling superconductivity. Moreover the study of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth estimated using the transverse field-$μ$SR measurements gives a zero temperature value of the magnetic penetration depth $λ_{\mathrm{L}}(0)$ = 386(3) nm, superconducting carrier density $n_{\mathrm{s}}$ = 2.9(1) $\times$10$^{27}$ carriers $m^{-3}$ and the carriers' effective-mass enhancement $m^{*}$ = 1.53(1) $m_{\mathrm{e}}$. Our zero-field-$μ$SR measurements do not reveal the spontaneous appearance of an internal magnetic field below the transition temperature, which indicates that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state of LaIr$_3$.

Superconductivity in Ru0.55Rh0.45P and Ru0.75Rh0.25As probed by muon spin relaxation and rotation measurements

Superconductivity in the pseudo-binary pnictides Ru0.55Rh0.45P and Ru0.75Rh0.25As is probed by muon spin relaxation and rotation (muSR) measurements in conjuction with magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistivity measurements. Powder x-ray diffraction confirmed the MnP-type orthorhombic structure (space group Pnma) and showed a nearly single phase nature with small impurity phase(s) of about 5% for both the samples. The occurence of bulk superconductivity is confirmed with Tc = 3.7 K for Ru0.55Rh0.45P and T = 1.6 K for Ru0.75Rh0.25As. The superconducting state electronic heat capacity data reveal weak-coupling single-band isotropic s-wave gap BCS superconductivity. Various normal and superconducting state parameters are determined which reveal a weak-coupling electron-phonon driven type-II dirty-limit superconductivity for both the compounds. The upper critical field shows a linear temperature dependence down to the lowest measured temperatures which is quite unusual for a single-band superconductor. The muSR data confirm the conventional type-II behavior, and show evidence for a single-band s-wave singlet pairing superconductivity with a preserved time reversal symmetry for both the compounds.

The magnetization, resistivity and specific heat measurements confirm that LaPtGe is a type-II bulk superconductor with a transition temperature T$ _{c} $ = 3.05 $ \pm $ 0.05 K. Muon-spin relaxation/rotation measurements confirms that time reversal preserved in the superconducting ground state.

Origin of magnetic moments and presence of a resonating valence bond state in Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$

While it was speculated that 5$d^4$ systems would possess non-magnetic $J$~=~0 ground state due to strong Spin-Orbit Coupling (SOC), all such systems have invariably shown presence of magnetic moments so far. A puzzling case is that of Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$, which in spite of having a perfectly cubic structure with largely separated Ir$^{5+}$ ($d^4$) ions, has consistently shown presence of weak magnetic moments. Moreover, we clearly show from Muon Spin Relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements that a change in the magnetic environment of the implanted muons in Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$ occurs as temperature is lowered below 10~K. This observation becomes counterintuitive, as the estimated value of SOC obtained by fitting the RIXS spectrum of Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$ with an atomic $j-j$ model is found to be as high as 0.39~eV, meaning that the system within this model is neither expected to possess moments nor exhibit temperature dependent magnetic response. Therefore we argue that the atomic $j-j$ coupling description is not sufficient to explain the ground state of such systems, where despite having strong SOC, presence of hopping triggers delocalisation of holes, resulting in spontaneous generation of magnetic moments. Our theoretical calculations further indicate that these moments favour formation of spin-orbital singlets in the case of Ba$_2$YIrO$_6$, which is manifested in $μ$SR experiments measured down to 60~mK.

Magnetism and the phase diagram of MnSb$_2$O$_6$

Static and dynamic magnetic properties of P\={3}1$m$-phase MnSb$_2$O$_6$ have been studied by means of muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR), high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR), specific heat, and magnetisation studies in magnetic fields up to 25\,T. The data imply onset of long-range antiferromagnetic order at $T_N$ =~8~K and a spin-flop-like transition at $B_{SF}\approx 0.7 - 1$~T. Below $T_N$, muon asymmetry exhibits well-defined oscillations indicating a narrow distribution of the local fields. A competing antiferromagnetic phase appearing below $T_2$ =~5.3~K is evidenced by a step in the magnetisation and a slight kink of the relaxation rate. Above $T_N$ , both $μ$SR and HF-ESR data suggest short-range spin order. HF-ESR data show that local magnetic fields persist up to at least $12\cdot T_{\rm N}\approx 100$\,K. Analysis of the antiferromagnetic resonance modes and the thermodynamic spin-flop field suggest zero-field splitting of $Δ\approx 18$\,GHz which implies small but finite magnetic anisotropy.

Breakdown of magnetic order in the pressurized Kitaev iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

Temperature-pressure phase diagram of the Kitaev hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ is explored using magnetization, thermal expansion, magnetostriction, and muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements, as well as single-crystal x-ray diffraction under pressure and ab initio calculations. The Neel temperature of $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ increases with the slope of 0.9 K/GPa upon initial compression, but the reduction in the polarization field $H_c$ reflects a growing instability of the incommensurate order. At 1.4 GPa, the ordered state breaks down upon a first-order transition giving way to a new ground state marked by the coexistence of dynamically correlated and frozen spins. This partial freezing in the absence of any conspicuous structural defects may indicate classical nature of the resulting pressure-induced spin liquid, an observation paralleled to the increase in the nearest-neighbor off-diagonal exchange $Γ$ under pressure.

Direct Evidence for Time-Reversal Symmetry Breaking in Topological Superconductor Sr0.1Bi2Se3

The single helical Fermi surface on the surface state of three-dimensional topological insulator Bi2Se3 is constrained by the time-reversal invariant bulk topology to possess a spin-singlet superconducting pairing symmetry. In fact, the Cu-doped, and pressure-tuned superconducting Bi2Se3 show no evidence of the time reversal symmetry breaking. We report on the detection of the time reversal symmetry (TRS) breaking in the topological superconductor Sr0.1Bi2Se3 , probed by zero-field (ZF) μSR measurements. The TRS breaking provides strong evidence for the existence of spin-triplet pairing state. The temperature dependent super-fluid density deduced from transverse-field (TF) μSR measurement yields nodeless superconductivity with low superconducting carrier density and penetration depth λ = 1622(134) nm. From the microscopic theory of unconventional pairing, we find that such a fully gapped spin triplet pairing channel is promoted by the complex interplay between the structural hexagonal warping and higher order Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling terms. Based on Ginzburg-Landau analysis, we delineate the mixing of singlet to triplet pairing symmetry as the chemical potential is tuned far above from the Dirac cone. Our observation of such spontaneous TRS breaking chiral superconductivity on a helical surface state, protected by the TRS invariant bulk topology, can open new avenues for interesting research and applications.

Multigap Superconductivity in a charge density wave superconductor LaPt2Si2

The superconducting gap structure of a charge density wave (CDW) superconductor LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ ($T_c$ = 1.6~K) having a quasi two dimensional crystal structure has been investigated using muon spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements carried out in transverse field (TF), zero field (ZF) and longitudinal field (LF) geometries. Rigorous analysis of TF-$μ$SR spectra in the superconducting state corroborates that the temperature dependence of the effective penetration depth, $λ_L$, derived from muon spin depolarization, fits to an isotropic $s+s-$wave model suggesting that the Fermi surface contains two gaps of different magnitude rather than an isotropic gap expected for a conventional $s-$wave superconductor. On the other hand, ZF $μ$SR data do not show any significant change in muon spin relaxation rate above and below the superconducting transition indicating the fact that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the system.

Evidence for a dynamical ground state in a frustrated pyrohafnate Tb2Hf2O7

We report the physical properties of Tb2Hf2O7 based on ac magnetic susceptibility χ_ac(T), dc magnetic susceptibility χ(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), and heat capacity C_p(T) measurements combined with muon spin relaxation (\muSR) and neutron powder diffraction measurements. No evidence for long-range magnetic order is found down to 0.1 K. However, χ_ac(T) data present a frequency-dependent broad peak (near 0.9 K at 16 Hz) indicating slow spin dynamics. The slow spin dynamics is further evidenced from the \muSR data (characterized by a stretched exponential behavior) which show persistent spin fluctuations down to 0.3 K. The neutron powder diffraction data collected at 0.1 K show a broad peak of magnetic origin (diffuse scattering) but no magnetic Bragg peaks. The analysis of the diffuse scattering data reveals a dominant antiferromagnetic interaction in agreement with the negative Weiss temperature. The absence of long-range magnetic order and the presence of slow spin dynamics and persistent spin fluctuations together reflect a dynamical ground state in Tb2Hf2O7.

Direct evidence of superconductivity and determination of the superfluid density in buried ultrathin FeSe grown on SrTiO$_3$

Bulk FeSe is superconducting with a critical temperature $T_c$ $\cong$ 8 K and SrTiO$_3$ is insulating in nature, yet high-temperature superconductivity has been reported at the interface between a single-layer FeSe and SrTiO$_3$. Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements observe a gap opening at the Fermi surface below $\approx$ 60 K. Elucidating the microscopic properties and understanding the pairing mechanism of single-layer FeSe is of utmost importance as it is a basic building block of iron-based superconductors. Here, we use the low-energy muon spin rotation/relaxation technique (LE-$μ$SR) to detect and quantify the supercarrier density and determine the gap symmetry in FeSe grown on SrTiO$_3$ (100). Measurements in applied field show a temperature dependent broadening of the field distribution below $\sim$ 60 K, reflecting the superconducting transition and formation of a vortex state. Zero field measurements rule out the presence of magnetism of static or fluctuating origin. From the inhomogeneous field distribution, we determine an effective sheet supercarrier density $n_s^{2D} \simeq 6 \times 10^{14}$ cm$^{-2}$ at $T \rightarrow 0$ K, which is a factor of 4 larger than expected from ARPES measurements of the excess electron count per Fe of 1 monolayer (ML) FeSe. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density $n_s(T)$ can be well described down to $\sim$ 10 K by simple s-wave BCS, indicating a rather clean superconducting phase with a gap of 10.2(1.1) meV. The result is a clear indication of the gradual formation of a two dimensional vortex lattice existing over the entire large FeSe/STO interface and provides unambiguous evidence for robust superconductivity below 60 K in ultrathin FeSe.

Microscopic investigation of the weakly correlated noncentrosymmetric superconductor SrAuSi$_3$

SrAuSi$_3$ is a noncentrosymmetric superconductor (NCS) with $T_c$ = 1.54 K, which to date has been studied only via macroscopic techniques. By combining nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and muon-spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements we investigate both the normal and the superconducting phase of SrAuSi$_3$ at a local level. In the normal phase, our data indicate a standard metallic behavior with weak electron correlations and a Korringa constant $S_\mathrm{exp} = 1.31 \times 10^{-5}$ sK. The latter, twice the theoretical value, can be justified by the Moriya theory of exchange enhancement. In the superconducting phase, the material exhibits conventional BCS-type superconductivity with a weak-coupling s-wave pairing, a gap value $Δ(0)$ = 0.213(2) meV, and a magnetic penetration depth $λ(0)$ = 398(2) nm. The experimental proof of weak correlations in SrAuSi$_{3}$ implies that correlation effects can be decoupled from those of antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling (ASOC), thus enabling accurate band-structure calculations in the weakly-correlated NCSs.

Muon spin relaxation and inelastic neutron scattering investigations of all-in/all-out antiferromagnet Nd2Hf2O7

Nd2Hf2O7, belonging to the family of geometrically frustrated cubic rare earth pyrochlore oxides, was recently identified to order antiferromagnetically below T_N = 0.55 K with an all-in/all-out arrangement of Nd3+ moments, however with a much reduced ordered state moment. Herein we investigate the spin dynamics and crystal field states of Nd2Hf2O7 using muon spin relaxation (muSR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. Our muSR study confirms the long range magnetic ordering and shows evidence for coexisting persistent dynamic spin fluctuations deep inside the ordered state down to 42 mK. The INS data show the crytal electric field (CEF) excitations due to the transitions both within the ground state multiplet and to the first excited state multiplet. The INS data are analyzed by a model based on CEF and crystal field states are determined. Strong Ising-type anisotropy is inferred from the ground state wavefunction. The CEF parameters indicate the CEF-split Kramers doublet ground state of Nd3+ to be consistent with the dipolar-octupolar character.
