Observation of angle-dependent mode conversion and mode hopping in 2D annular antidot lattice

We report spin-wave excitations in annular antidot lattice fabricated from 15 nm-thin Ni80Fe20 flm. The nanodots of 170 nm diameters are embedded in the 350 nm (diameter) antidot lattice to form the annular antidot lattice, which is arranged in a square lattice with edge-to-edge separation of 120 nm. A strong anisotropy in the spin-wave modes are observed with the change in orientation angle (ϕ) of the in-plane bias magnetic field by using Time-resolved Magneto-optic Kerr microscope. A fattened fourfold rotational symmetry, mode hopping and mode conversion leading to mode quenching for three prominent spin-wave modes are observed in this lattice with the variation of the bias field orientation. Micromagnetic simulations enable us to successfully reproduce the measured evolution of frequencies with the orientation of bias magnetic field, as well as to identify the spatial profles of the modes. The magnetostatic field analysis, suggest the existence of magnetostatic coupling between the dot and antidot in annular antidot sample. Further local excitations of some selective spin-wave modes using numerical simulations showed the anisotropic spin-wave propagation through the lattice.

Observation of band narrowing and mode conversion in two-dimensional binary magnonic crystal

We introduce a new type of binary magnonic crystal, where Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ nanodots of two different sizes are diagonally connected forming a unit and those units are arranged in a square lattice. The magnetization dynamics of the sample is measured by using time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect microscope with varying magnitude and in-plane orientation ($ϕ$) of the bias magnetic field. Interestingly, at $ϕ=0^{\circ}$, the spin-wave mode profiles show frequency selective spatial localization of spin-wave power within the array. With the variation of $ϕ$ in the range $0^{\circ}<ϕ\leq 45^{\circ}$, we observe band narrowing due to localized to extended spin-wave mode conversion. Upon further increase of $ϕ$, the spin-wave modes slowly lose the extended nature and become fully localized again at 90$^{\circ}$. We have extensively demonstrated the role of magnetostatic stray field distribution on the rotational symmetries obtained for the spin-wave modes. From micromagnetic simulations, we find that the dipole-exchange coupling between the nano-dots leads to remarkable modifications of the spin-wave mode profiles when compared with arrays of individual small and large dots. Numerically, we also show that the physical connection between the nano-dots provides more control points over the spin-wave propagation in the lattice at different orientations of bias magnetic field. This new type of binary magnonic crystal may find potential applications in magnonic devices such as spin-wave waveguide, filter, coupler, and other on-chip microwave communication devices.

Broadband pump-probe study of biexcitons in chemically exfoliated layered WS$_{2}$

Strong light-matter interactions in layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) open up vivid possibilities for novel exciton-based devices. The optical properties of TMDs are dominated mostly by the tightly bound excitons and more complex quasiparticles, the biexcitons. Instead of physically exfoliated monolayers, the solvent-mediated chemical exfoliation of these 2D crystals is a cost-effective, large-scale production method suitable for real device applications. We explore the ultrafast excitonic processes in WS$_{2}$ dispersion using broadband femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy at room temperature. We detect the biexcitons experimentally and calculate their binding energies, in excellent agreement with earlier theoretical predictions. Using many-body physics, we show that the excitons act like Weiner-Mott excitons and explain the origin of excitons via first-principles calculations. Our detailed time-resolved investigation provides ultrafast radiative and non-radiative lifetimes of excitons and biexcitons in WS$_{2}$. Indeed, our results demonstrate the potential for excitonic quasiparticle-controlled TMDs-based devices operating at room temperature.

Transmission and reflection in a perfectly amplifying and absorbing medium

We study transmission and reflection properties of a perfectly amplifying as well as absorbing medium analytically by using the tight binding equation. Different expressions for transmittance and reflectance are obtained for even and odd values of the sample length which is the origin of their oscillatory behavior. In a weak amplifying medium, a cross-over length scale exists below which transmittance and reflectance increase exponentially and above which transmittance decays exponentially while the reflectance gets saturated. Depending on amplification transmittance and reflectance show singular behavior at the cross-over length. In a weak absorbing medium we do not find any cross-over length scale. The transmission coefficient behaves similar to that in an amplifying medium in the asymptotic limit. In a strong amplifying/absorbing medium, the transmission coefficient decays exponentially in the large length limit. In both weak as well as strong absorbing media the logarithm of the reflection coefficient shows the same behavior as obtained in an amplifying medium but with opposite sign.

Effect of nonlinearity on the dynamics of a particle in dc field-induced systems

Dynamics of a particle in a perfect chain with one nonlinear impurity and in a perfect nonlinear chain under the action of dc field is studied numerically. The nonlinearity appears due to the coupling of the electronic motion to optical oscillators which are treated in adiabatic approximation. We study for both the low and high values of field strength. Three different range of nonlinearity is obtained where the dynamics is different. In low and intermediate range of nonlinearity, it reduces the localization. In fact in the intermediate range subdiffusive behavior in the perfect nonlinear chain is obtained for a long time. In all the cases a critical value of nonlinear strength exists where self-trapping transition takes place. This critical value depends on the system and the field strength. Beyond the self-trapping transition nonlinearity enhances the localization.

Time evolution of models described by one-dimensional discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation

The dynamics of models described by a one-dimensional discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation is studied. The nonlinearity in these models appears due to the coupling of the electronic motion to optical oscillators which are treated in adiabatic approximation. First, various sizes of nonlinear cluster embedded in an infinite linear chain are considered. The initial excitation is applied either at the end-site or at the middle-site of the cluster. In both the cases we obtain two kinds of transition: (i) a cluster-trapping transition and (ii) a self-trapping transition. The dynamics of the quasiparticle with the end-site initial excitation are found to exhibit, (i) a sharp self-trapping transition, (ii) an amplitude-transition in the site-probabilities and (iii) propagating soliton-like waves in large clusters. Ballistic propagation is observed in random nonlinear systems. The effect of nonlinear impurities on the superdiffusive behavior of random-dimer model is also studied.
