Observation of Radially Inward Turbulent Particle Flux in ETG dominated Plasma of LVPD

Radially inward turbulent particle flux is observed in the core region of target plasma of Large Volume Plasma Device(LVPD). The region satisfy conditions for ETG turbulence, i.e. threshold condition, $ η_e = L_{n_e} / L_{T_e} > 2/3 $ , where density scale length, $ L_{n_e} \sim 300 cm $ and temerature scale length, $ L_{T_e} \sim 50cm $[S.K. Mattoo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 108, 255007(2012)\cite{Mattoo_PRL}]. The measured flux is dominantly electrostatic ($Γ_{es} \approx 10^{5} Γ_{em}$) although the nature of the measured turbulence is electromagnetic($β\approx 0.6 $). The turbulence has been established as a consequence of electron temperature gradient (ETG) driven modes. Experimental observations of phase angle between density ($ n_e $) and potential ($ϕ$) fluctuations, $ θ_{\tilde{n}_e, \tildeϕ} $ and electrostatic particle flux, $ Γ_{es} $ shows good agreement with the corresponding theoretical estimates for ETG turbulence.

Shear Viscosity of Turbulent Chiral Plasma

It is well known that the difference between the chemical potentials of left-handed and right-handed particles in a parity violating (chiral) plasma can lead to an instability. We show that the chiral instability may drive turbulent transport. Further we estimate the anomalous viscosity of chiral plasma arising from the enhanced collisionality due to turbulence.

Experimental observation of strong coupling effects on the dispersion of dust acoustic waves in a plasma

The dispersion properties of low frequency dust acoustic waves in the strong coupling regime are investigated experimentally in an argon plasma embedded with a mixture of kaolin and $MnO_2$ dust particles. The neutral pressure is varied over a wide range to change the collisional properties of the dusty plasma. In the low collisional regime the turnover of the dispersion curve at higher wave numbers and the resultant region of $\partialω/\partial k < 0$ are identified as signatures of dust-dust correlations. In the high collisional regime dust neutral collisions produce a similar effect and prevent an unambiguous identification of strong coupling effects.

Visco-elastic effects in strongly coupled dusty plasmas

We report on experimental evidence of visco-elastic effects in a strongly coupled dusty plasma through investigations of the propagation characteristics of low frequency dust acoustic waves and by excitations of transverse shear waves in a DC discharge Argon plasma.

Radiation Reaction Effect on Laser Driven Auto-Resonant Particle Acceleration

The effects of radiation reaction force on laser driven auto-resonant particle acceleration scheme are studied using Landau-Lifshitz equation of motion. These studies are carried out for both linear as well as circularly polarized laser fields in the presence of static axial magnetic field. From the parametric study, a radiation reaction dominated region has been identified in which the particle dynamics is greatly effected by this force. In the radiation reaction dominated region the two significant effects on particle dynamics are seen viz., (1) saturation in energy gain by the initially resonant particle, (2) net energy gain by a initially non-resonant particle which is caused due to resonance broadening. It has been further shown that with the optimum choice of parameters this scheme can be efficiently used to produce electrons with energies in the range of hundreds of TeV. The quantum corrections to the Landu-Lifshitz equation of motion have also been taken into account. The difference in the energy gain estimates of the particle by the quantum corrected and classical Landu-Lifshitz equation are found to be insignificant for the present day as well as upcoming laser facilities.

Instabilities in Anisotropic Chiral Plasmas

Using the Berry-curvature modified kinetic equation we study instabilities in anisotropic chiral plasmas. It is demonstrated that even for a very small value of anisotropic parameter the chiral-imbalance instability is strongly modified. The instability is enhanced when the modes propagates in the direction parallel to the anisotropy vector and it is strongly suppressed when the modes propagate in the perpendicular direction. Further the instabilities in the jet-plasma system is also investigated. For the case when the modes are propagating in direction parallel to the stream velocity we find that there exist a new branch of the dispersion relation arising due to the parity odd effects. We also show that the parity-odd interaction can enhance the streaming instability.

Driven transverse shear waves in a strongly coupled dusty plasma

The linear dispersion properties of transverse shear waves in a strongly coupled dusty plasma are experimentally studied by exciting them in a controlled manner with a variable frequency external source. The dusty plasma is maintained in the strongly coupled fluid regime with (1 < Gamma << Gamma_c) where Gamma is the Coulomb coupling parameter and Gamma_c is the crystallization limit. A dispersion relation for the transverse waves is experimentally obtained over a frequency range of 0.1 Hz to 2 Hz and found to show good agreement with viscoelastic theoretical results.

Experimental study of nonlinear dust acoustic solitary waves in a dusty plasma

The excitation and propagation of finite amplitude low frequency solitary waves are investigated in an Argon plasma impregnated with kaolin dust particles. A nonlinear longitudinal dust acoustic solitary wave is excited by pulse modulating the discharge voltage with a negative potential. It is found that the velocity of the solitary wave increases and the width decreases with the increase of the modulating voltage, but the product of the solitary wave amplitude and the square of the width remains nearly constant. The experimental findings are compared with analytic soliton solutions of a model Kortweg-de Vries equation.

Laser Generated Magnetic Pulses: Hot Electron Propagation in Conducting and Dielectric Material

We report experimental evidence of electrostatic inhibition of fast electrons, generated in a highly resistive material upon irradiation with an intense ultra-short ($10^{16} W/cm^{2}$, $100 fmsec$) laser pulse. The experiment involves measurement of temporal evolution of self-generated magnetic pulses using pump-probe polarimetry. A comparison is made between the temporal behaviour of magnetic pulses generated with Aluminum and Glass targets. It is found that in contrast to Aluminium, self-generated magnetic pulse decays much faster in glass. This is attributed to the absence of return shielding currents in glass, which results in build up of electrostatic field, which in turn inhibits the movement of fast electrons. Fitting of experimental measurements using a one dimensional model, yields estimate of conductivity of Aluminium and glass, and penetration depth of hot electrons in these materials.

Study of Coherent and Incoherent Plasma Emissions: Role of Plasma Wave Excitation and Breaking

Here we experimentally map the dynamics of electron plasma waves in laser solid interaction. We do time resolved measurements of second harmonic and hard X-ray generation from interaction of intense ($10^{16} W cm^{-2}$, 100 fs, 800nm) laser with a pre-plasma generated on a solid surface. The parameter space explored in this time resolved study includes variation of scale length, laser polarization and laser intensity in conjunction. These measurements done together brings novel features of strongly driven electron plasma wave behavior, which have not been explored experimentally so far. We model the results in terms of Resonance Absorption and Wave-Breaking mechanisms. The Harmonic and X-ray emission show contrasting behaviour, which indicates pitfalls in trying to increase harmonic efficiencies by brute force. However by simple adjustments, we observe that hard X-rays can be enhanced or controlled upto two orders of magnitude and second harmonic upto one order of magnitude under optimum conditions. These results should help us understand the governing mechanisms for short wavelength generation and fast particle generation to develop more efficient sources for application purposes.

Laser-Generated Ultrashort Multi-Megagauss Magnetic Pulses in Plasmas

We demonstrate ultrashort (6 ps), multi-Megagauss (27 MG) magnetic pulses generated upon interaction of an intense laser pulse (10^{16} Wcm^-2, 100 fs) with a solid target. The temporal evolution of these giant fields generated near the high density critical layer is obtained with the highest resolution reported so far. Particle-in-cell simulations and phenomenological modeling is used to explain the results. The first direct observations of anomalously rapid damping of plasma shielding currents produced in response to the hot electron currents penetrating the bulk plasma are presented.

Evidence of Levy stable process in tokamak edge turbulence

In an effort to understand the fundamental physics of turbulent transport of particles and heat in a tokamak, the floating potential fluctuations in the the scrape-off layer plasma of ohmically heated ADITYA tokamak are analysed for self-similarity using distribution function approach. It is observed that the distribution function of a sum of n data points converges to a Levy distribution of scale index, alpha=1.111 for n < 40 and alpha=2.0 for larger n. In both scaling ranges, the edge fluctuation is self-similar. This observation is backed by several supporting evidences. The results indicate that the small scale fluctuations transport matter and heat dominantly by convection whereas the transport due to large scale flucuations is by a diffusive process.

Instability of Shear Waves in an Inhomogeneous Strongly Coupled Dusty Plasma

It is demonstrated that low frequency shear modes in a strongly coupled, inhomogeneous, dusty plasma can grow on account of an instability involving the dynamical charge fluctuations of the dust grains. The instability is driven by the gradient of the equilibrium dust charge density and is associated with the finite charging time of the dust grains. The present calculations, carried out in the generalized hydrodynamic viscoelastic formalism, also bring out important modifications in the threshold and growth rate of the instability due to collective effects associated with coupling to the compressional mode.
