Electron-acoustic solitary pulses and double layers in multi-component plasmas

We consider the nonlinear propagation of finite amplitude electron-acoustic waves (EAWs) in multi-component plasmas composed of two distinct groups of electrons (cold and hot components), and non-isothermal ions. We use the continuity and momentum equations for cold inertial electrons, Boltzmann law for inertialess hot electrons, non-isothermal density distribution for hot ions, and Poisson's equation to derive an energy integral with a modified Sagdeev potential (MSP) for nonlinear EAWs. The MSP is analyzed to demonstrate the existence of arbitrary amplitude EA solitary pulses (EASPs) and EA double layers (EA-DLs). Small amplitude limits have also been considered and analytical results for EASPs and EA-DLs are presented. The implication of our results to space and laboratory plasmas is briely discussed.

Comment on "On Novel attractive forces between ions in quantum plasmas -- failure of linearized quantum hydrodynamics"

In a recent paper Bonitz, Pehlke and Schoof [1], hereafter referred to as BPS, have raised some points against the newly found Shukla-Eliasson attractive potential [2,3], hereafter refererred to as SEAP, around a stationary test charge in a quantum plasma [2,3]. Our objective here is to discuss the inappropriateness of BPS reasoning concerning the applicability of the linearized quantum hydrodynamic theory, as well as to point out the shortcomings in BSP's arguments and to suggest for rescuing the BSP's density functional theory and simulations which have failed to produce results that correctly match with that of Shukla and Eliasson [2,3].

Clustering of Ions at Atomic Dimensions in Quantum Plasmas

By means of particle simulations of the equations of motion for ions interacting among themselves under the influence of newly discovered Shukla-Eliasson attractive force (SEAF) in a dense quantum plasma, we demonstrate that the SEAF can bring ions closer at atomic dimensions. We present simulation results of the dynamics of an ensemble of ions in the presence of the SEAF without and with confining external potentials and collisions between the ions and degenerate electrons. Our particle simulations reveal that under the SEAF, ions attract each other, come closer and form ionic clusters in the bath of degenerate electrons that shield the ions. Furthermore, an external confining potential produces robust ion clusters that can have cigar-like and ball-like shapes, which remain stable when the confining potential is removed. The stability of ion clusters is discussed. Our results may have applications to solid density plasmas (density exceeding $10^{23}$ per cubic centimeters), where the electrons will be degenerate and quantum forces due to the electron recoil effect caused by the overlapping of electron wave functions and electron tunneling through the Bohm potential, electron-exchange and electron-exchange and electron correlations associated with electron-1/2 spin effect, and the quantum statistical pressure of the degenerate electrons play a decisive role.

Ion-acoustic solitary waves and shocks in a collisional dusty negative ion plasma

We study the effects of ion-dust collisions and ion kinematic viscosities on the linear ion-acoustic instability as well as the nonlinear propagation of small amplitude solitary waves and shocks (SWS) in a negative ion plasma with immobile charged dusts. {The existence of two linear ion modes, namely the `fast' and `slow' waves is shown, and their properties are analyzed in the collisional negative ion plasma.} {Using the standard reductive perturbation technique, we derive a modified Korteweg-de Vries-Burger (KdVB) equation which describes the evolution of small amplitude SWS.} {The profiles of the latter are numerically examined with parameters relevant for laboratory and space plasmas where charged dusts may be positively or negatively charged.} It is found that negative ion plasmas containing positively charged dusts support the propagation of SWS with negative potential. However, the perturbations with both positive and negative potentials may exist when dusts are negatively charged. The results may be useful for the excitation of SWS in laboratory negative ion plasmas as well as for observation in space plasmas where charged dusts may be positively or negatively charged.

Rossby rogons in atmosphere and in the solar photosphere

The generation of Rossby rogue waves (Rossby rogons), as well as the excitation of bright and dark Rossby envelpe solitons are demonstrated on the basis of the modulational instability (MI) of a coherent Rossby wave packet. The evolution of an amplitude modulated Rossby wave packet is governed by one-dimensional (1D) nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). The latter is used to study the amplitude modulation of Rossby wave packets for fluids in Earth's atmosphere and in the solar photosphere. It is found that an ampitude modulated Rossby wave packet becomes stable (unstable) against quasi-stationary, long wavelength (in comparision with the Rossby wave length) perturbations, when the carrier Rossby wave number satisfies $k^2 < 1/2$ or $\sqrt{2}+1 3$ or $1/2<k^2<\sqrt{2}+1$). It is also shown that a Rossby rogon or a bright Rossby envelope soliton may be excited in the shallow water approximation for the Rossby waves in solar photosphere. However, the excitation of small or large scale perturbations may be possible for magnetized plasmas in the ionosphereic $E-$layer.

Breather mode in the many-electron dynamics of semiconductor quantum wells

We demonstrate the existence of a novel breather mode in the self-consistent electron dynamics of a semiconductor quantum well. A non-perturbative variational method based on quantum hydrodynamics is used to determine the salient features of the electron breather mode. Numerical simulations of the time-dependent Wigner-Poisson or Hartree equations are shown to be in excellent agreement with our analytical results. For asymmetric quantum wells, a signature of the breather mode is observed in the dipole response, which can be detected by standard optical means.

Nonlinear dynamics of large amplitude dust acoustic shocks and solitary pulses in dusty plasmas

We present a fully nonlinear theory for dust acoustic (DA) shocks and DA solitary pulses in a strongly coupled dusty plasma, which have been recently observed experimentally by Heinrich et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 115002 (2009)], Teng et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 245005 (2009)], and Bandyopadhyay et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 065006 (2008)]. For this purpose, we use a generalized hydrodynamic model for the strongly coupled dust grains, accounting for arbitrary large amplitude dust number density compressions and potential distributions associated with fully nonlinear nonstationary DA waves. Time-dependent numerical solutions of our nonlinear model compare favorably well with the recent experimental works (mentioned above) that have reported the formation of large amplitude non-stationary DA shocks and DA solitary pulses in low-temperature dusty plasma discharges.

Theory for large amplitude electrostatic ion shocks in quantum plasmas

We present a generalized nonlinear theory for large amplitude electrostatic (ES) ion shocks in collisional quantum plasmas composed of mildly coupled degenerate electron fluids of arbitrary degeneracy and non-degenerate strongly correlated ion fluids with arbitrary atomic number. For our purposes, we use the inertialess electron momentum equation including the electrostatic, pressure gradient and relevant quantum forces, as well as a generalized viscoelastic momentum (GVEM) equation for strongly correlated non-degenerate ions. The ion continuity equation, in the quasi-neutral approximation, then closes our nonlinear system of equations. When the electric field is eliminated from the GVEM equation by using the inertialess electron momentum equation, we then obtain a generalized GVEM and the ion continuity equations exhibiting nonlinear couplings between the ion number density and the ion fluid velocity. The pair of nonlinear equations is numerically solved to study the dynamics of arbitrary large amplitudes planar and non-planar ES shocks arising from the balance between harmonic generation nonlinearities and the ion fluid viscosity for a wide range of the plasma mass-density and the ion atomic-number that are relevant for the cores of giant planets (viz. the Jupiter) and compact stars (viz. white dwarfs). Our numerical results reveal that the ES shock density profiles strongly depend on the plasma number density and composition (the atomic-number) parameters. Furthermore, density perturbations propagate with Mach numbers which significantly dependent on the studied plasma fractional parameters. It is concluded that the dynamics of the ES shocks in the super-dense degenerate plasma is quite different in the core of a white dwarf star from that in the lower density crust region.

Alfvenic tornadoes

It is shown that a three-dimensional (3D) modified-kinetic Alfvén waves (m-KAWs) can propagate in the form of Alfvénic tornadoes characterized by plasma density whirls or magnetic flux ropes carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM). By using the two fluid model, together with Ampère's law, we derive the wave equation for a 3D m-KAWs in a magnetoplasma with $m_e/m_i \ll β\ll 1$, where $m_e$ $(m_i)$ is the electron (ion) mass, $β=4 πn_0 k_B (T_e + T_i)/B_0^2$, $n_0$ the unperturbed plasma number density, $k_B$ the Boltzmann constant, $T_e (T_e)$ the electron (ion) temperature, and $B_0$ the strength of the ambient magnetic field. The 3D m-KAW equation admits solutions in the form of a Laguerre-Gauss (LG) Alfvénic vortex beam or Alfvénic tornadoes with plasma density whirls that support the dynamics of Alfvén magnetic flux ropes.

Twisted Dust Acoustic Waves in Dusty Plasmas

We examine linear dust acoustic waves (DAWs) in a dusty plasma with strongly correlated dust grains, and discuss possibility of a twisted DA vortex beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM). For our purposes, we use the Boltzmann distributed electron and ion density perturbations, the dust continuity and generalized viscoelastic dust momentum equations, and Poisson's equation to obtain a dispersion relation for the modified DAWs. The effects of the polarization force, strong dust couplings, and dust charge fluctuations on the DAW spectrum are examined. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the DAW can propagate as a twisted vortex beam carrying OAM. A twisted DA vortex structure can trap and transport dust particles in dusty plasmas.

Negative energy waves and quantum relativistic Buneman instabilities

The quantum relativistic Buneman instability is investigated theoretically using a collective Klein-Gordon model for the electrons and a cold fluid model for the ions. The growth rate and unstable wave spectrum is investigated in different parameter regimes corresponding to various degrees of relativistic and quantum effects. The results may be important for streaming instabilities involving ion dynamics in very dense plasmas.

Amplitude modulated drift wave packets in a nonuniform magnetoplasma

We consider the amplitude modulation of low-frequency, long wavelength electrostatic drift wave packets in a nonuniform magnetoplasma with the effects of equilibrium density, electron temperature and magnetic field inhomogeneities. The dynamics of the modulated drift wave packet is governed by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The latter is used to study the modulational instability of a Stoke's wave train to a small longitudinal perturbation. It is shown that the drift wave packet is stable (unstable) against the modulation when the drift wave number lies in $0< k < 1/\sqrt{2}$ $(1/\sqrt{2}<k<1)$. Thus, the modulated drift wave packet can propagate in the form of bright and dark envelope solitons or as a drift wave rogon.

Relativistic Klein-Gordon-Maxwell multistream model for quantum plasmas

A multistream model for spinless electrons in a relativistic quantum plasma is introduced by means of a suitable fluid-like version of the Klein-Gordon-Maxwell system. The one and two-stream cases are treated in detail. A new linear instability condition for two-stream quantum plasmas is obtained, generalizing the previously known non-relativistic results. In both the one and two-stream cases, steady-state solutions reduce the model to a set of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations, which can be numerically solved, yielding a manifold of nonlinear periodic and soliton structures. The validity conditions for the applicability of the model are addressed.

Stability and evolution of wave packets in strongly coupled degenerate plasmas

We study the nonlinear propagation of electrostatic wave packets in a collisional plasma composed of strongly coupled ions and relativistically degenerate electrons. The equilibrium of ions is maintained by an effective temperature associated with their strong coupling, whereas that of electrons is provided by the relativistic degeneracy pressure. Using a multiple scale technique, a (3+1)-dimensional coupled set of nonlinear Schrödinger-like equations with nonlocal nonlinearity is derived from a generalized viscoelastic hydrodynamic model. These coupled equations, which govern the dynamics of wave packets, are used to study the oblique modulational instability of a Stoke's wave train to a small plane wave perturbation. We show that the wave packets, though stable to the parallel modulation, becomes unstable against oblique modulations. In contrast to the long-wavelength carrier modes, the wave packets with short-wavelengths are shown to be stable in the weakly relativistic case, whereas they can be stable or unstable in the ultra-relativistic limit. Numerical simulation of the coupled equations reveals that a steady state solution of the wave amplitude exists together with the formation of a localized structure in (2+1) dimensions. However, in the (3+1)-dimensional evolution, a Gaussian wave beam self-focuses after interaction and blows up in a finite time. The latter is, however, arrested when the dispersion predominates over the nonlinearities. This occurs when the Coulomb coupling strength is higher or a choice of obliqueness of modulation, or a wavelength of excitation is different. Possible application of our results to the interior as well as in an outer mantle of white dwarfs are discussed.

Drift wave turbulence in the presence of a dust density gradient

We present turbulent properties of electrostatic drift waves in a nonuniform collisional plasma composed of magnetised electrons and ions in the presence of immobile dust particles. For this purpose, we derive a pair of nonlinear quasi-two-dimensional equations exhibiting the coupling between the generalized ion vorticity and density fluctuations associated with collisional drift waves. The effect of a dust density gradient on the initial drift instability and fully developed turbulence is examined numerically.

Growing electrostatic modes in the isothermal pair plasma of the pulsar magnetosphere

It is shown that a strongly magnetized isothermal pair plasma near the surface of a pulsar supports low-frequency (in comparison to electron cyclotron frequency) toroidal electrostatic plasma modes in the equatorial region. Physically, the thermal pressure coupled with the magnetic pressure creates the low frequency oscillations which may grow for particular case of inhomogeneities of the equilibrium magnetic field and the pair plasma density.
