Statistical description of short pulses in long optical fibers: Effects of nonlocality

We present a statistical description of the propagation of short pulses in long optical fibers, taking into account the Kerr and nonlocal nonlinearities on an equal footing. We use the Wigner approach on the modified nonlinear Schroedinger equation to obtain a wave kinetic equation and a nonlinear dispersion relation. The latter exhibit that the optical pulse decoherence reduces the growth rate of the modulational instability, and thereby contribute to the nonlinear stability of the pulses in long optical fibers. It is also found that the interaction between spectral broadening and nonlocality tends to extend the instability region.

Modulational instability criteria for two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

The stability of colliding Bose-Einstein condensates is investigated. A set of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations is thus considered, and analyzed via a perturbative approach. No assumption is made on the signs (or magnitudes) of the relevant parameters like the scattering lengths and the coupling coefficients. The formalism is therefore valid for asymmetric as well as symmetric coupled condensate wave states. A new set of explicit criteria is derived and analyzed. An extended instability region, in addition to an enhanced instability growth rate is predicted for unstable two component bosons, as compared to the individual (uncoupled) state.

New low-frequency nonlinear electromagnetic wave in a magnetized plasma

A new nonlinear electromagnetic wave mode in a magnetized plasma is predicted. Its existence depends on the interaction of an intense circularly polarized electromagnetic wave with a plasma, where quantum electrodynamical photon--photon scattering is taken into account. This scattering gives rise to a new coupling between the matter and the radiation. Specifically, we consider an electron--positron plasma, and show that the propagation of the new mode is admitted. It could be of significance in pulsar magnetospheres, and result in energy transport between the pulsar poles.

Solitons and decoherence in left-handed metamaterials

We present exact electromagnetic solitary pulses that can be experimentally obtained within nonlinear left-handed metamaterials. The effect of pulse decoherence on the modulation instability of partially incoherent electromagnetic waves is also investigated. The results may contribute to a better understanding of nonlinear electromagnetic pulse propagation in media with negative index of refraction.

The Intense Radiation Gas

We present a new dispersion relation for photons that are nonlinearly interacting with a radiation gas of arbitrary intensity due to photon-photon scattering. It is found that the photon phase velocity decreases with increasing radiation intensity, it and attains a minimum value in the limit of super-intense fields. By using Hamilton's ray equations, a self-consistent kinetic theory for interacting photons is formulated. The interaction between an electromagnetic pulse and the radiation gas is shown to produce pulse self-compression and nonlinear saturation. Implications of our new results are discussed.

Dust acoustic wave in a strongly magnetized pair-dust plasma

The existence of the dust acoustic wave (DAW) in a strongly magnetized electron-positron (pair)-dust plasma is demonstrated. In the DAW, the restoring force comes from the pressure of inertialess electrons and positrons, and the dust mass provides the inertia. The waves could be of interest in astrophysical settings such as the supernovae and pulsars, as well as in cluster explosions by intense laser beams in laboratory plasmas.

A kinetic approach to Bose-Einstein condensates: self-phase modulation and Bogoliubov oscillations

A kinetic approach to the Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) is proposed, based on the Wigner-Moyal equation (WME). In the quasi-classical limit, the WME reduces to the particle number conservation equation. Two examples of application are: i) a self-phase modulation of a BE condensate beam where we show that part of the beam is decelerated and eventually stops as a result of the gradient of the effective self-potential; ii) the derivation of a kinetic dispersion relation for sound waves in the BECs, including a collisionless Landau damping.

Cherenkov radiation in a photon gas

It is well-known that a charged particle moving with constant velocity in vacuum does not radiate. In a medium the situation can be different. If the so called Cherenkov condition is satisfied, i.e. the particle velocity exceeds the phase speed in the medium, the particle will radiate. We show that a charge moving with a constant velocity in a gas of photons emits Cherenkov radiation, even in the gamma-ray regime, due to nonlinear quantum electrodynamic effects. Our result is evaluated with respect to the radiation background in the early universe, and it is argued that the effect can be significant.

Generation of Gravitational Radiation in Dusty Plasmas and Supernovae

We present a novel nonlinear mechanism for exciting a gravitational radiation pulse (or a gravitational wave) by dust magnetohydrodynamic (DMHD) waves in dusty astrophysical plasmas. We derive the relevant equations governing the dynamics of nonlinearly coupled DMHD waves and a gravitational wave (GW). The system of equations is used to investigate the generation of a GW by compressional Alfvén waves in a type II supernova. The growth rate of our nonlinear process is estimated, and the results are discussed in the context of the gravitational radiation accompanying supernova explosions.

Modulated dust-acoustic wave packets in a plasma with non-isothermal electrons and ions

Nonlinear self-modulation of the dust acoustic waves is studied, in the presence of non-thermal (non-Maxwellian) ion and electron populations. By employing a multiple scale technique, a nonlinear Schrodinger-type equation (NLSE) is derived for the wave amplitude. The influence of non-thermality, in addition to obliqueness (between the propagation and modulation directions), on the conditions for modulational instability to occur is discussed. Different types of localized solutions (envelope excitations) which may possibly occur are discussed, and the dependence of their characteristics on physical parameters is traced. The ion deviation from a Maxwellian distribution comes out to be more important than the electron analogous deviation alone. Both yield a de-stabilizing effect on (the amplitude of) DAWs propagating in a dusty plasma with negative dust grains. The opposite effect, namely a tendency towards amplitude stabilization, is found for the case of positively charged dust presence in the plasma.

Wave-kinetic description of nonlinear photons

The nonlinear interaction, due to quantum electrodynamical (QED) effects, between photons is investigated using a wave-kinetic description. Starting from a coherent wave description, we use the Wigner transform technique to obtain a set of wave-kinetic equations, the so called Wigner-Moyal equations. These equations are coupled to a background radiation fluid, whose dynamics is determined by an acoustic wave equation. In the slowly varying acoustic limit, we analyse the resulting system of kinetic equations, and show that they describe instabilities, as well as Landau-like damping. The instabilities may lead to break-up and focusing of ultra-high intensity multi-beam systems, which in conjunction with the damping may result in stationary strong field structures. The results could be of relevance for the next generation of laser-plasma systems.

Lagrangean description of nonlinear dust--ion acoustic waves in dusty plasmas

An analytical model is presented for the description of nonlinear dust-ion-acoustic waves propagating in an unmagnetized, collisionless, three component plasma composed of electrons, ions and inertial dust grains. The formulation relies on a Lagrangean approach of the plasma fluid model. The modulational stability of the wave amplitude is investigated. Different types of localized envelope electrostatic excitations are shown to exist.

Electron-acoustic plasma waves: oblique modulation and envelope solitons

Theoretical and numerical studies are presented of the amplitude modulation of electron-acoustic waves (EAWs) propagating in space plasmas whose constituents are inertial cold electrons, Boltzmann distributed hot electrons and stationary ions. Perturbations oblique to the carrier EAW propagation direction have been considered. The stability analysis, based on a nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLSE), reveals that the EAW may become unstable; the stability criteria depend on the angle $θ$ between the modulation and propagation directions. Different types of localized EA excitations are shown to exist.

Linear and nonlinear properties of Rao-dust-Alfvén waves in magnetized plasmas

The linear and nonlinear properties of the Rao-dust-magnetohydrodynamic (R-D-MHD) waves in a dusty magnetoplasma are studied. By employing the inertialess electron equation of motion, inertial ion equation of motion, Ampère's law, Faraday's law, and the continuity equation in a plasma with immobile charged dust grains, the linear and nonlinear propagation of two-dimensional R-D-MHD waves are investigated. In the linear regime, the existence of immobile dust grains produces the Rao cutoff frequency, which is proportional to the dust charge density and the ion gyrofrequency. On the other hand, the dynamics of an amplitude modulated R-D-MHD waves is governed by the cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation. The latter has been derived by using the reductive perturbation technique and the two-timescale analysis which accounts for the harmonic generation nonlinearity in plasmas. The stability of the modulated wave envelope against non-resonant perturbations is studied. Finally, the possibility of localized envelope excitations is discussed.

Modulated wavepackets associated with longitudinal dust grain oscillations in a dusty plasma crystal

The nonlinear amplitude modulation of longitudinal dust lattice waves (LDLWs) propagating in a dusty plasma crystal is investigated in a continuum approximation. It is shown that long wavelength LDLWs are modulationally stable, while shorter wavelengths may be unstable. The possibility for the formation and propagation of different envelope localized excitations is discussed. It is shown that the total grain displacement bears a (weak) constant displacement (zeroth harmonic mode), due to the asymmetric form of the nonlinear interaction potential. The existence of asymmetric envelope localized modes is predicted. The types and characteristics of these coherent nonlinear structures are discussed.

Nonlinear theory of solitary waves associated with longitudinal particle motion in lattices - Application to longitudinal grain oscillations in a dust crystal

The nonlinear aspects of longitudinal motion of interacting point masses in a lattice are revisited, with emphasis on the paradigm of charged dust grains in a dusty plasma (DP) crystal. Different types of localized excitations, predicted by nonlinear wave theories, are reviewed and conditions for their occurrence (and characteristics) in DP crystals are discussed. Making use of a general formulation, allowing for an arbitrary (e.g. the Debye electrostatic or else) analytic potential form $ϕ(r)$ and arbitrarily long site-to-site range of interactions, it is shown that dust-crystals support nonlinear kink-shaped localized excitations propagating at velocities above the characteristic DP lattice sound speed $v_0$. Both compressive and rarefactive kink-type excitations are predicted, depending on the physical parameter values, which represent pulse- (shock-)like coherent structures for the dust grain relative displacement. Furthermore, the existence of breather-type localized oscillations, envelope-modulated wavepackets and shocks is established. The relation to previous results on atomic chains as well as to experimental results on strongly-coupled dust layers in gas discharge plasmas is discussed.

Oblique amplitude modulation of dust-acoustic plasma waves

Theoretical and numerical studies are presented of the nonlinear amplitude modulation of dust-acoustic (DA) waves propagating in an unmagnetized three component, weakly-coupled, fully ionized plasma consisting of electrons, positive ions and charged dust particles, considering perturbations oblique to the carrier wave propagation direction. The stability analysis, based on a nonlinear Schroedinger-type equation (NLSE), shows that the wave may become unstable; the stability criteria depend on the angle $θ$ between the modulation and propagation directions. Explicit expressions for the instability rate and threshold have been obtained in terms of the dispersion laws of the system. The possibility and conditions for the existence of different types of localized excitations have also been discussed.
