Open clusters in 2MASS photometry II. Mass Function and Mass Segregation

This is a continuation of our study of open clusters based on the 2--Micron All Sky Survey photometry. Here we present the results of the mass function analysis for 599 known open clusters in the Milky Way. The main goal of this project is a study of the dynamical state of open clusters, the mass segregation effect and an estimate of the total mass and the number of cluster members. We noticed that the cluster size (core and overall radii) decreases along dynamical evolution of clusters. The cluster cores evolve faster than the halo regions and contain proportionally less low-mass stars from the beginning of the cluster dynamical evolution. We also noticed, that the star density decreases for the larger clusters. Finally, we found an empirical relation describing the exponential decrease of the mass function slope with the dynamical evolution of clusters.

RR-Lyrae-type pulsations from a 0.26-solar-mass star in a binary system

RR Lyrae pulsating stars have been extensively used as tracers of old stellar populations for the purpose of determining the ages of galaxies, and as tools to measure distances to nearby galaxies. There was accordingly considerable interest when the RR Lyr star OGLE-BLG-RRLYR-02792 was found to be a member in an eclipsing binary system4, as the mass of the pulsator (hitherto constrained only by models) could be unambiguously determined. Here we report that RRLYR-02792 has a mass of 0.26 M_sun and therefore cannot be a classical RR Lyrae star. Through models we find that its properties are best explained by the evolution of a close binary system that started with 1.4 M_sun and 0.8 M_sun stars orbiting each other with an initial period of 2.9 days. Mass exchange over 5.4 Gyr produced the observed system, which is now in a very short-lived phase where the physical properties of the pulsator happen to place it in the same instability strip of the H-R diagram occupied by RR Lyrae stars. We estimate that samples of RR Lyr stars may contain a 0.2 percent contamination with systems similar to this one, implying that distances measured with RR Lyrae stars should not be significantly affected by these binary interlopers.

The Araucaria Project. Accurate determination of the dynamical mass of the classical Cepheid in the eclipsing system OGLE-LMC-CEP-1812

We have analyzed the double-lined eclipsing binary system OGLE-LMC-CEP-1812 in the LMC and demonstrate that it contains a classical fundamental mode Cepheid pulsating with a period of 1.31 days. The secondary star is a stable giant. We derive the dynamical masses for both stars with an accuracy of 1.5%, making the Cepheid in this system the second classical Cepheid with a very accurate dynamical mass determination, following the OGLE-LMC-CEP-0227 system studied by Pietrzynski et al. (2010). The measured dynamical mass agrees very well with that predicted by pulsation models. We also derive the radii of both components and accurate orbital parameters for the binary system. This new, very accurate dynamical mass for a classical Cepheid will greatly contribute to the solution of the Cepheid mass discrepancy problem, and to our understanding of the structure and evolution of classical Cepheids.

Open clusters in 2MASS photometry - I. Structural and basic astrophysical parameters

The main goal of our project is to obtain a complete picture of individual open clusters from homogeneous data and then search for correlations between their astrophysical parameters. The near-infrared JHKS photometric data from the 2-Micron All Sky Survey were used to determine new coordinates of the centres, angular sizes and radial density profiles for 849 open clusters in the Milky Way. Additionally, age, reddening, distance, and linear sizes were also derived for 754 of them. For these open clusters our results are in satisfactory agreement with the literature data. The analysed sample contains open clusters with ages in the range from 7 Myr to 10 Gyr. The majority of these clusters are located up to 3 kpc from the Sun, less than 0.4 kpc from the Galactic Plane and 6 - 12 kpc from the Galactic Centre. The majority of clusters have core radii of about 1.5 pc and the limiting radii of the order of 10 pc. We notice that in the near-infrared, open clusters seem to be greater than in optical bands. We notice that a paucity of clusters is observed at Galactic longitudes range from 140° to 200° which probably reflects the real spatial distribution of open clusters in the Galaxy. The lack of clusters was also found in earlier studies.

Iron lines in model disk spectra of galactic black hole binaries

We present angle-dependent, broad-band intensity spectra from accretion disks around black holes of 10 M$_\odot$. In our computations disks are assumed to be slim, which means that the radial advection is taken into account while computing effective temperature of the disk. We attempt to reconstruct continuum and line spectra of X-ray binaries in soft state, i.e. dominated by the disk component of multitemperature shape. We follow how the iron line complex depends on the external irradiation, an accretion rate and a black hole spin. Full radiative transfer is solved including effects of Compton scattering, free-free and all important bound-free transitions of 10 main elements. Moreover, we include here the fundamental series of iron lines from helium-like and hydrogen-like ions, and fluorescent K$_α$ and K$_β$ lines from low ionized iron. We consider two cases: non-rotating black hole, and black hole rotating with almost maximum spin a=0.98, and obtain spectra for five accretion disks from hard X-rays to the infrared. In non irradiated disks, resonance lines from He-like and H-like iron appear mostly in absorption. Such disk spectra exhibit limb-darkening in the whole energy range. External irradiation causes that iron resonance lines appear in emission. Furthermore, depending on disk effective temperature, fluorescent iron K$_α$ and K$_β$ lines are present in disk emitting spectra. All models with irradiation exhibit limb-brightening in their X-ray reflected continua. We show, that the disk around stellar black hole itself is hot enought to produce strong absorption resonance lines of iron. Emission lines can be observed only if heating by external X-rays dominates over thermal processess in hot disk atmosphere. Irradiated disks are usually brighter in X-ray continuum when seen edge on, and fainter when seen face on.
