Cosmic ray ensembles as signatures of ultra-high energy photons interacting with the solar magnetic field

Propagation of ultra-high energy photons in the solar magnetosphere gives rise to cascades comprising thousands of photons. We study the cascade development using Monte Carlo simulations and find that the photons in the cascades are spatially extended over millions of kilometers on the plane distant from the Sun by 1 AU. We compare results from simulations which use two models of the solar magnetic field, and show that although signatures of such cascades are different for the models used, for practical detection purpose in the ground-based detectors, they are similar.

Implication of Kinetic Alfven Waves to Magnetic Field Turbulence Spectra: Earth's Magnetosheath

In the present paper, we investigate the power-law behaviour of the magnetic field spectra in the Earths magnetosheath region using Cluster spacecraft data under solar minimum condition. The power spectral density of the magnetic field data and spectral slopes at various frequencies are analysed. Propagation angle and compressibility are used to test the nature of turbulent fluctuations. The magnetic field spectra have the spectral slopes between -1.5 to 0 down to spatial scales of 20 ion gyroradius and show clear evidence of a transition to steeper spectra for small scales with a second power-law, having slopes between -2.6 to -1.8. At low frequencies, f_sc<0.3f_ci(where f_ci is ion gyro-frequency), propagation angle approximately 90 degrees to the mean magnetic field, B_0, and compressibility shows a broad distribution, 0.1 < R > 0.9. On the other hand at f_sc>10f_ci, the propagation angle exhibits a broad range between 30-90 degree while 'R' has a small variation: 0.2 < R > 0.5. We conjecture that at high frequencies, the perpendicularly propagating Alfven waves could partly explain the statistical analysis of spectra. To support our prediction of kinetic Alfven wave-dominated spectral slope behaviour at high frequency, we also present a theoretical model and simulate the magnetic field turbulence spectra due to the nonlinear evolution of kinetic Alfven waves. The present study also shows the analogy between the observational and simulated spectra.

Charmonium Excitation functions in $\bar p$A Collisions

We study the excitation function of the low-lying charmonium state: $Ψ$(3686) in $\bar p$ Au collisions taking into account their in-medium propagation. The time evolution of the spectral functions of the charmonium state is studied with a BUU type transport model. We calculated the excitation function of $Ψ$(3686) production and show that it is strongly effected by the medium. The energy regime will be available for the PANDA experiment.

Cosmic-Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory: status and perspectives

The Cosmic-Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) is a project dedicated to global studies of extremely extended cosmic-ray phenomena, the cosmic-ray ensembles (CRE), beyond the capabilities of existing detectors and observatories. Up to date cosmic-ray research has been focused on detecting single air showers, while the search for ensembles of cosmic-rays, which may overspread a significant fraction of the Earth, is a scientific terra incognita. Instead of developing and commissioning a completely new global detector infrastructure, CREDO proposes approaching the global cosmic-ray analysis objectives with all types of available detectors, from professional to pocket size, merged into a worldwide network. With such a network it is possible to search for evidences of correlated cosmic-ray ensembles. One of the observables that can be investigated in CREDO is a number of spatially isolated events collected in a small time window which could shed light on fundamental physics issues. The CREDO mission and strategy requires active engagement of a large number of participants, also non-experts, who will contribute to the project by using common electronic devices (e.g. smartphones). In this note the status and perspectives of the project is presented.

Cosmic Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory: a global network of detectors to probe contemporary physics mysteries

In the past few years, cosmic-rays beyond the GZK cut-off ($E > 5 \times 10^{19}$ eV) have been detected by leading collaborations such as Pierre Auger Observatory. Such observations raise many questions as to how such energies can be reached and what source can possibly produce them. Although at lower energies, mechanisms such as Fermi acceleration in supernovae front shocks seem to be favored, top-down scenarios have been proposed to explain the existence of ultra-high energy cosmic-rays: the decay of super-massive long-lived particles produced in the early Universe may yield to a flux of ultra-high energy photons. Such photons might be presently generating so called super-preshowers, an extended cosmic-ray shower with a spatial distribution that can be as wide as the Earth diameter. The Cosmic Ray Extremely Distributed Observatory (CREDO) mission is to find such events by means of a network of detectors spread around the globe. CREDO's strategy is to connect existing detectors and create a worldwide network of cosmic-ray observatories. Moreover, citizen-science constitutes an important pillar of our approach. By helping our algorithms to recognize detection patterns and by using smartphones as individual cosmic-ray detectors, non-scientists can participate in scientific discoveries and help unravel some of the deepest mysteries in physics.

Phenomenology of light mesons within a chiral approach

The so-called extended linear sigma model is a chiral model with (pseudo)scalar and (axial-)vector mesons. It is based on the requirements of (global) chiral symmetry and dilatation invariance. The purpose of this model is the description of the hadron phenomenology up to 1.7 GeV. We present the latest theoretical results, which show a good agreement with the experiment.

Scalar mesons in a linear sigma model with (axial-)vector mesons

The structure of the scalar mesons has been a subject of debate for many decades. In this work we look for $\bar{q}q$ states among the physical resonances using an extended Linear Sigma Model that contains scalar, pseudoscalar, vector, and axial-vector mesons both in the non-strange and strange sectors. We perform global fits of meson masses, decay widths and amplitudes in order to ascertain whether the scalar $\bar{q}q$ states are below or above 1 GeV. We find the scalar states above 1 GeV to be preferred as $\bar{q}q$ states.

Influence of the isospin and hypercharge chemical potentials on the location of the CEP in the mu_B-T phase diagram of the SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R chiral quark model

We investigate the influence of the asymmetric quark matter (rho_u\ne rho_d\ne rho_s) on the mass of the quasiparticles and the phase diagram of the chiral quark model parametrized at one-loop level of the renormalized theory, using the optimized perturbation theory for the resummation of the perturbative series. The effect of various chemical potentials introduced in the grand canonical ensemble is investigated with the method of relativistic many-body theory. The temperature dependence of the topological susceptibility is estimated with the help of the Witten-Veneziano mass formula.

The critical surface of the SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R chiral quark model at non-zero baryon density

The boundary of the first order chiral phase transition region is studied in the m_pi-m_K-mu_B space using the one-loop optimized perturbation theory for the resummation of the perturbative series. Chiral perturbation theory for mesons and baryons is used for the T=0 parametrization of the model. The surface of second order transition points bends with increasing mu_B towards the physical point of the m_pi-m_K mass plane allowing for the existence of the critical end point in the mu_B-T plane at the physical point. The location and scaling region of the CEP is explored.
