Wide-angle pion-Delta(1232) photoproduction

High-energy wide-angle photoproduction of pion-Delta final states is investigated within the handbag mechanism to twist-3 accuracy. In this approach the process amplitudes factorize in a hard partonic subprocess and and in form factors which represent 1/x-moments of p-Delta transition generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness. The subproces, calculated to twist-3 accuracy, is the same as in pion photoproduction. The p-Delta GPDs are related to the proton-proton GPDs exploiting large-N_C results. The proton-proton GPDs as well as the twist-2 and twist-3 pion distribution amplitudes appearing in the subprocess are taken from other work. Reasonable agreement with experiment is found in this almost parameter-free analysis.

A study of photometric errors on two different photographic plate scans

A considerable number of photographic plate archives exist world wide and digitization is in progress or already has been finished. Not only different type of scanners were used but also spatial resolution and dynamic range often were limited due to process duration and storage space. The open question is the effect of these limitations on the results. 61 high resolution photographic plates of the Gamma Cyg field from the Bruce astrograph at Landessternwarte Heidelberg--K\"onigstuhl (aperture 40~cm, focal length 200~cm) had been digitized both in Heidelberg and Sonneberg. Both scanners were set to 16 bit dynamic range. The Heidelberg scanner was operated at 2540 dpi resolution, resulting in a scale of 1 arcsec/pixel, while the Sonneberg scanner was operated at 1200 dpi, yielding a scale of 2.1 arsec/pixel. In the presented study the standard deviation of non--variable star light curves were examined in dependence of brightness and plate coordinates in both series. No evident differences could be found. A comparison of the analysis of both scan series will be presented.

Lepton-pair production in hard exclusive hadron-hadron collisions

We investigate lepton-pair production in hard exclusive hadron-hadron collisions. We consider a double handbag (DH) mechanism in which the process amplitude factorizes in hard subprocesses, qq -> qq gamma* and qg -> qg gamma*, and in soft hadron matrix elements parameterized as generalized parton distributions (GPDs). Employing GPDs extracted from exclusive meson electroproduction, we present predictions for the lepton-pair cross section at kinematics typical for the LHC, NICA and FAIR. It turns out from our numerical studies that the quark-gluon subprocess dominates by far, the quark-quark (antiquark) subprocesses are almost negligible.

Extraction of beam-spin asymmetries from the hard exclusive $\pi^{+}$ channel off protons in a wide range of kinematics

We have measured beam-spin asymmetries to extract the $\sin\phi$ moment $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ from the hard exclusive $\vec{e} p \to e^\prime n \pi^+$ reaction above the resonance region, for the first time with nearly full coverage from forward to backward angles in the center-of-mass. The $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ moment has been measured up to 6.6 GeV$^{2}$ in $-t$, covering the kinematic regimes of Generalized Parton Distributions (GPD) and baryon-to-meson Transition Distribution Amplitudes (TDA) at the same time. The experimental results in very forward kinematics demonstrate the sensitivity to chiral-odd and chiral-even GPDs. In very backward kinematics where the TDA framework is applicable, we found $A_{LU}^{\sin\phi}$ to be negative, while a sign change was observed near 90$^\circ$ in the center-of-mass. The unique results presented in this paper will provide critical constraints to establish reaction mechanisms that can help to further develop the GPD and TDA frameworks.

The path to Z And-type outbursts: The case of V426 Sagittae (HBHA 1704-05)

The star V426 Sge (HBHA~1704-05), originally classified as an emission-line object and a semi-regular variable, brightened at the beginning of August 2018, showing signatures of a symbiotic star outburst. We aim to confirm the nature of V426 Sge as a classical symbiotic star, determine the photometric ephemeris of the light minima, and suggest the path from its 1968 symbiotic nova outburst to the following 2018 Z And-type outburst. We re-constructed an historical light curve (LC) of V426 Sge from approximately the year 1900, and used original low- and high-resolution spectroscopy complemented with Swift-XRT and UVOT, optical UBVRcIc and near-infrared JHKL photometry obtained during the 2018 outburst and the following quiescence. The historical LC reveals no symbiotic-like activity from 1900 to 1967. In 1968, V426 Sge experienced a symbiotic nova outburst that ceased around 1990. From approximately 1972, a wave-like orbitally related variation with a period of $493.4\pm 0.7$ days developed in the LC. This was interrupted by a Z And-type outburst from the beginning of August 2018 to the middle of February 2019. At the maximum of the 2018 outburst, the burning white dwarf (WD) increased its temperature to $>2\times 10^5$ K, generated a luminosity of $\sim 7\times 10^{37}(d/3.3kpc)^2$ erg/s, and blew a wind at the rate of $\sim 3\times 10^{-6}$ M$_{\odot}$/yr. The donor is a normal M4-5 III giant and the accretor is a low-mass $\sim$0.5 M$_{\odot}$ WD. During the transition from the symbiotic nova outburst to the quiescent phase, a pronounced sinusoidal variation along the orbit develops in the LC of most symbiotic novae. The following eventual outburst is of Z And-type, when the accretion by the WD temporarily exceeds the upper limit of the stable burning. At this point the system becomes a classical symbiotic star.

Hard exclusive processes involving kaons

Hard exclusive electroproduction of kaons as well as the kaon-induced exclusive Drell-Yan process are investigated within the handbag approach which is based on factorization in hard subprocesses and soft generalized parton distributions (GPDs). The kaon-hyperon transition GPDs occurring here, are related to the proton GPDs by flavor symmetry. The latter ones are taken from analyses of pion electroproduction. Like in hard processes involving pions the transversity GPDs play an important role in the processes of interest - the transverse cross sections are larger than (or, for the Drell-Yan process, about equal to) the longitudinal ones. The evolution of the transversity GPDs is taken into account for the first time but, as the analysis reveals, it is a minor effect in the range of photon virtualities of interest. The predictions for the cross sections agree fairly well with the sparse available electroproduction data.

Twist-3 contributions to wide-angle photoproduction of pions

We investigate wide-angle pi^0 photoproduction within the handbag approach to twist-3 accuracy. In contrast to earlier work both the 2-particle as well as the 3-particle twist-3 contributions are taken into account. It is shown that both are needed for consistent results that respect gauge invariance and crossing properties. The numerical studies reveal the dominance of the twist-3 contribution. With it fair agreement with the recent CLAS measurement of the pi^0 cross section is obtained. We briefly comment also on wide-angle photoproduction of other pseudoscalar mesons.

Nucleon and nuclear structure through dilepton production

Transverse momentum distributions and generalized parton distributions provide a comprehensive framework for the three-dimensional imaging of the nucleon and the nucleus experimentally using deeply virtual semi-exclusive and exclusive processes. The advent of combined high luminosity facilities and large acceptance detector capabilities enables experimental investigation of the partonic structure of hadrons with time-like virtual probes, in complement to the rich on-going space-like virtual probe program. The merits and benefits of the dilepton production channel for nuclear structure studies are discussed within the context of the International Workshop on Nucleon and Nuclear Structure through Dilepton Production taking place at the European Center for Theoretical Studies in Nuclear Physics and Related Areas (ECT$^{\star}$) of Trento. Particularly, the double deeply virtual Compton scattering, the time-like Compton scattering, the deeply virtual meson production, and the Drell-Yan processes are reviewed and a strategy for high impact experimental measurements is proposed.

Workshop on High-Intensity Photon Sources (HIPS2017) Mini-Proceedings

This workshop aimed at producing an optimized photon source concept with potential increase of scientific output at Jefferson Lab, and at refining the science for hadron physics experiments benefitting from such a high-intensity photon source. The workshop brought together the communities directly using such sources for photo-production experiments, or for conversion into $K_L$ beams. The combination of high precision calorimetry and high intensity photon sources greatly enhances scientific benefit to (deep) exclusive processes like wide-angle and time-like Compton scattering. Potential prospects of such a high-intensity source with modern polarized targets were also discussed. The availability of $K_L$ beams would open new avenues for hadron spectroscopy, for example for the investigation of "missing" hyperon resonances, with potential impact on QCD thermodynamics and on freeze-out both in heavy ion collisions and in the early universe.

The GPD H-tilde and spin correlations in wide-angle Compton scattering

Wide-angle Compton scattering (WACS) is discussed within the handbag approach in which the amplitudes are given by products of hard subprocess amplitudes and form factors, specific to Compton scattering, which represent 1/x-moments of generalized parton distributions (GPDs). The quality of our present knowledge of these form factors and of the underlying GPDs is examined. As will be discussed in some detail the form factor R_A and the underlying GPD H-tilde are poorly known. It is argued that future data on the spin correlations A_{LL} and/or K_{LL} will allow for an extraction of R_A which can be used to constrain the large -t behavior of H-tilde.

Ratios of helicity amplitudes for exclusive $\rho^0$ electroproduction on transversely polarized protons

Exclusive $\rho^0$-meson electroproduction is studied by the HERMES experiment, using the 27.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron/positron beam of HERA and a transversely polarized hydrogen target, in the kinematic region 1.0 GeV$^2$<Q$^2$<7.0 GeV$^2$, 3.0 GeV<W<6.3 GeV, and -t'<0.4 GeV$^2$. Using an unbinned maximum-likelihood method, 25 parameters are extracted. These determine the real and imaginary parts of the ratios of several helicity amplitudes describing $\rho^0$-meson production by a virtual photon. The denominator of those ratios is the dominant amplitude, the nucleon-helicity-non-flip amplitude $F_{0\frac{1}{2}0\frac{1}{2}}$, which describes the production of a longitudinal $\rho^{0}$-meson by a longitudinal virtual photon. The ratios of nucleon-helicity-non-flip amplitudes are found to be in good agreement with those from the previous HERMES analysis. The transverse target polarization allows for the first time the extraction of ratios of a number of nucleon-helicity-flip amplitudes to $F_{0\frac{1}{2}0\frac{1}{2}}$. Results obtained in a handbag approach based on generalized parton distributions taking into account the contribution from pion exchange are found to be in good agreement with these ratios. Within the model, the data favor a positive sign for the $\pi-\rho$ transition form factor. By also exploiting the longitudinal beam polarization, a total of 71 $\rho^0$ spin-density matrix elements is determined from the extracted 25 parameters, in contrast to only 53 elements as directly determined in earlier analyses.

A study of the gamma* - f0(980) transition form factors

The spin wave function of the f0(980)-meson is constructed under the assumption that the meson is dominantly a quark-antiquark state. This wave function is used in a calculation of the gamma* - f0 transition form factors. In the real-photon limit the results for the transverse form factor are compared to the large momentum transfer data measured by the BELLE collaboration recently. It turns out that, for the momentum-transfer range explored by BELLE, the collinear approximation does not suffer, power corrections to it, modeled as quark transverse moment effects, seem to be needed. Mixing of the f0 with the sigma(500) is also briefly discussed.

Summary of workshop on Future Physics with HERA Data

Recent highlights from the HERA experiments, Hermes, H1 and ZEUS, are reviewed and ideas for future analyses to fully exploit this unique data set are proposed. This document is a summary of a workshop on future physics with HERA data held at DESY, Hamburg at the end of 2014. All areas of HERA physics are covered and contributions from both experimentalists and theorists are included. The document outlines areas where HERA physics can still make a significant contribution, principally in a deeper understanding of QCD, and its relevance to other facilities. Within the framework of the Data Preservation in High Energy Physics, the HERA data have been preserved for analyses to take place over a timescale of 10 years and more. Therefore, although an extensive list of possibilities is presented here, safe storage of the data ensures that it can also be used in the far future should new ideas and analyses be proposed.

The exclusive limit of the pion-induced Drell-Yan process

Based on previous studies of hard exclusive leptoproduction of pions in which the essential role of the pion pole and the transversity generalized parton distributions has been pointed out, we present predictions for the four partial cross sections of the exclusive Drell-Yan process, pi^-p -> l^-l^+n.

Status of DVMP, DVCS and GPDs

The analysis of exclusive meson leptoproduction (DVMP) within the handbag approach is reviewed and the parametrization of the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) is discussed in some detail with the main interest focused of the GPDs H and E. Applications of the GPDs extracted from DVMP to other hard exclusive processes as for instance deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) and an evaluation of Ji's sum rule are also presented.

Historical light curve of the black hole binary V4641 Sgr based on the Moscow and Sonneberg plate archives

We performed digital processing of a large set of photographic plates for X-ray binary system V4641 Sgr containing a black hole. A total of 277 plates were found in archives dated between 1960 and 1992. Photographic observations revealed lower level of outburst activity if to compare with CCD data after the large 1999 outburst. Only single outburst which happened in 1978 was confirmed. If archive photographic data are used along with contemporary CCD observations, the orbital period may be improved, and its value is 2.81728 +/-0.00004 day.

The pion pole in hard exclusive vector-meson leptoproduction

Exploiting a set of generalized parton distributions (GPDs) derived from analyses of hard exclusive leptoproduction of rho0, phi and pi+ mesons, we investigate the omega spin density matrix elements (SDMEs) recently measured by the HERMES collaboration. It turns out from our study that the pion pole is an important contribution to omega production. It will be treated as a one-particle exchange since its evaluation from the GPD E-tilde considerably underestimates its contribution. As an intermediate step of our analysis we extract the pi-omega transition form factor for photon virtualities less than 4 GeV^2. From our approach we achieve results for the omega SDMEs in good agreement with the HERMES data. The role of the pion pole in exclusive rho0 and phi leptoproduction is discussed too.
