Investigation of cold Rb Rydberg atoms in a magneto-optical trap

We present our results on the experiments with cold Rb Rydberg atoms in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). Characteristic features of our experiment were the excitation of Rydberg atoms in a small volume within the cold atom cloud and sorting of the measured signals and spectra over the number of registered Rydberg atoms. We have measured the effective lifetime of the Rydberg state 37P, as well as its polarizability in a weak electric field. The results are in good agreement with the theoretical calculations. We have shown that localization of the small excitation volume around the zero-magnetic-field point makes possible to increase the spectral resolution and to obtain narrow microwave resonances in Rydberg atoms without switching off the MOT quadrupole magnetic field. We have measured the dependence of the amplitude of the dipole-dipole interaction resonances on the number of Rydberg atoms, which has a linear character and agrees with the theory for weak dipole-dipole interaction.

Rubidium lifetime in a dark magneto-optical trap

Measurements of rubidium lifetime in a dark magneto-optical trap (DMOT) was performed at various populations of the bright and dark hyperfine states of the trapped atoms. The rubidium lifetime in the trap appeared to be shorter if the atom spent more time in the bright state. A simple explanation of this effect is based on the increase of the cross-section of rubidium collisions with the surrounding warm atoms upon rubidium electronic excitation.

Simple external cavity diode laser

A semiconductor diode laser having a modified Littrow external resonator is described. An additional output coupling mirror in a V-shape configuration of the resonator makes the system more efficient and convenient to operate.

Enrichment of CH3F nuclear spin isomers by resonant microwave radiation

Theoretical model of the coherent control of nuclear spin isomers by microwave radiation has been developed. Model accounts the M-degeneracy of molecular states and molecular center-of-mass motion. The model has been applied to the 13CH3F molecules. Microwave radiation excites the para state (J=11,K=1) which is mixed by the nuclear spin-spin interaction with the ortho state (9,3). Dependencies of the isomer enrichment and conversion rates on the radiation frequency have been calculated. Both spectra consist of two resonances situated at the centers of allowed and forbidden (by nuclear spin) transitions in the molecule. Larger enrichment, up to 7%, can be produced by strong radiation resonant to the forbidden transition. The spin conversion rate can be increased by 2 orders of magnitude at this resonance.

Nuclear spin conversion in polyatomic molecules

Except for ortho- and para-H2, very little is known about nuclear spin isomers (or spin modifications) of molecules. The main reason is the lack of practical enrichment techniques. Recently a few enrichment methods were developed, which opened up new possibilities in the field. These methods are briefly reviewed. Substantial progress in the field has been made by the introduction of Light-Induced Drift as a gas-phase separation tool. This is illustrated by extensive data on CH3F, which reveal that the gas-phase ortho-para conversion is governed by intramolecular mixing of the nuclear spin states. The role of ``direct'' ortho-para transitions is shown to be small. Various aspects of the conversion were investigated in detail: pressure and collision partner dependence, isotope effect, temperature dependence. The most decisive information on the spin conversion mechanism is derived from the observation of level-crossing resonances in an electric field and the Quantum Zeno effect induced by collisions.

New access to very weak interactions in molecules

It is predicted that nuclear spin conversion in molecules can be efficiently controlled by strong laser radiation resonant to rovibrational molecular transition. The phenomenon can be used for substantial enrichment of spin isomers, or for detection of very weak (10-100 Hz) interactions in molecules.

Coherent control of enrichment and conversion of molecular spin isomers

A theoretical model of nuclear spin conversion in molecules controlled by an external electromagnetic radiation resonant to rotational transition has been developed. It has been shown that one can produce an enrichment of spin isomers and influence their conversion rates in two ways, through coherences and through level population change induced by radiation. Influence of conversion is ranged from significant speed up to almost complete inhibition of the process by proper choice of frequency and intensity of the external field.

Theory of nuclear spin conversion in ethylene

First theoretical analysis of the nuclear spin conversion in ethylene molecules (13^CCH4) has been performed. The conversion rate was found equal approx. 3x10^{-4} 1/s*Torr, which is in qualitative agreement with the recently obtained experimental value. It was shown that the ortho-para mixing in 13^CCH4 is dominated by the spin-rotation coupling. Mixing of only two pairs of ortho-para levels were found to contribute significantly to the spin conversion.
