A sewage management proposal for Luruaco lake, Colombia

This study presents numerical simulations of faecal coliforms dynamics in Luruaco lake, located in Atlántico Department, Colombia. The velocity field is obtained through a two-dimensional horizontal (2DH) model of Navier-Stokes equations system. The transport equation of faecal coliforms concentration is provided from a convective-diffusive-reactive equation. The lake's geometry is built through cubic spline and multi-block methods. The discretization method by Finite Differences and the First Order Upwind (FOU) are applied to the 2DH model. The Mark and Cell (MAC) method is used to determine numerically the velocity field of water flow. Numerical simulations are carried out for a 72-hour period in order to understand the influence of faecal coliforms injections from each tributary. From the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the factors that influence faecal coliforms dynamics, proposals are presented, which aim to reduce contamination in some regions of Lake Luruaco. The numerical simulations show that the best option to improve water quality in the lake is the implementation of two actions, the diversion of the Limón stream to the Negro stream and the installation of a sewage treatment plant at the mouth of the Negro stream. Other less expensive proposals are also presented.

Numerical Simulation of Fecal Coliform Dynamics in Luruaco Lake, Colombia

The Luruaco Lake located in the Department of Atlántico, Colombia, is damaged by the discharge of untreated sewage, bringing risks to the health of all who use its waters. The present study aims to perform the numerical simulation of the concentration dynamics of fecal coliforms in the lake. The simulation of the hydrodynamic flow is carried out by means of a two-dimensional horizontal (2DH) model, given by a Navier-Stokes system. The simulation of fecal coliform transport is described by a convective-dispersive-reactive equation. These equations are solved numerically by the Finite Difference Method (FDM) and the Mark and Cell (MAC) method, in generalized coordinates. Regarding the construction of the computational mesh of the Luruaco Lake, the cubic spline and multiblock methods were used. The results obtained in the simulations allow a better understanding of the dynamics of fecal coliforms in the Luruaco Lake, showing the more polluted regions. They can also advise public agencies on identifying the emitters of pollutants in the lake and on developing an optimal treatment for the recovery of the polluted environment.

Elementary excitations of a Higgs-Yukawa system

This work investigates the physics of elementary excitations for the so-called relativistic quantum scalar plasma system, also known as the Higgs-Yukawa system. Following the Nemes-Piza-Kerman-Lin many-body procedure, the Random-Phase Approximation (RPA) equations were obtained for this model by linearizing the Time-Dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations of motion around equilibrium. The resulting equations have a closed solution, from which the spectrum of excitation modes are studied. We show that the RPA oscillatory modes give the one-boson and two-fermion states of the theory. The results indicate the existence of bound states in certain regions in the phase diagram. Applying these results to recent LHC observations concerning the mass of the Higgs boson, we determine limits for the intensity of the coupling constant g of the Higgs-Yukawa model, in the RPA mean-field approximation, for three decay channels of the Higgs boson. Finally, we verify that, within our approximations, only Higgs bosons with masses larger than 190 GeV/c^2 can decay into top quarks.

Fermion Pairing Dynamics in the Relativistic Scalar Plasma

Using many-body techniques we obtain the time-dependent Gaussian approximation for interacting fermion-scalar field models. This method is applied to an uniform system of relativistic spin-1/2 fermion field coupled, through a Yukawa term, to a scalar field in 3+1 dimensions, the so-called quantum scalar plasma model. The renormalization for the resulting Gaussian mean-field equations, both static and dynamical, are examined and initial conditions discussed. We also investigate solutions for the gap equation and show that the energy density has a single minimum.

Elementary Excitations of a Relativistic Scalar Plasma System

We investigate the physics of elementary excitations for the so called relativistic scalar plasma system. Following the standard many-body procedure we have obtained the RPA equations for this model by linearizing the TDHFB equations of motion around equilibrium and shown that these oscillation modes give one-meson and two-fermion state of the theory. The resulting equations have a closed solution, from which one can examinate the spectrum of excitation modes. In partticular, our results indicate existence of bound state for certain region of phase diagram.

Exact Solution Versus Gaussian Approximation for a Non-Ideal Bose Gas in One-Dimension

We investigate ground-state and excitation spectrum of a system of non-relativistic bosons in one-dimension interacting through repulsive, two-body contact interactions in a self-consistent Gaussian mean-field approximation. The method consists in writing the variationally determined density operator as the most general Gaussian functional of the quantized field operators. There are mainly two advantages in working with one-dimension. First, the existence of an exact solution for the ground-state and excitation energies. Second, neither in the perturbative results nor in the Gaussian approximation itself we do not have to deal with the three-dimensional patologies of the contact interaction . So that this scheme provides a clear comparison between these three different results.

Small oscillations of a chiral Gross-Neveu system

We study the small oscillations regime (RPA approximation) of the time-dependent mean-field equations, obtained in a previous work, which describe the time evolution of one-body dynamical variables of a uniform Chiral Gross-Neveu system. In this approximation we obtain an analytical solution for the time evolution of the one-body dynamical variables. The two-fermion physics can be explored through this solution. The condition for the existence of bound states is examined.

Initial-conditions problem for a Chiral Gross-Neveu system

A time-dependent projection technique is used to treat the initial-value problem for self-interacting fermionic fields. On the basis of the general dynamics of the fields, we derive formal equations of kinetic type for the set of one-body dynamical variables. A nonperturbative mean-field expansion can be written for these equations. We treat this expansion in lowest order, which corresponds to the Gaussian mean-field approximation, for a uniform system described by the Chiral Gross-Neveu Hamiltonian. Standard stationary features of the model, such as dynamical mass generation due to chiral symmetry breaking and a phenomenon analogous to dimensional transmutation, are reobtained in this context. The mean-field time evolution of non-equilibrium initial states is discussed.
