Zero temperature string breaking in lattice quantum chromodynamics

The separation of a heavy quark and antiquark pair leads to the formation of a tube of flux, or "string", which should break in the presence of light quark-antiquark pairs. This expected zero-temperature phenomenon has proven elusive in simulations of lattice QCD. We study mixing between the string state and the two-meson decay channel in QCD with two flavors of dynamical sea quarks. We confirm that mixing is weak and find that it decreases at level crossing. While our study does not show direct effects of internal quark loops, our results, combined with unitarity, give clear confirmation of string breaking.

Zero Temperature String Breaking with Staggered Quarks

The separation of a heavy quark and antiquark pair leads to the formation of a tube of flux, or "string", which should break in the presence of light quark-antiquark pairs. This expected zero-temperature phenomenon has proven elusive in simulations of lattice QCD. In an extension of work reported last year we present clear evidence for string breaking in QCD with two flavors of dynamical staggered sea quarks and apply our results to a simple three-state mixing model for string breaking. We find that mixing is weak and falls to zero at level crossing.

The Pion-Nucleon sigma-Term with Dynamical Wilson Fermions

We calculate connected and disconnected contributions to the flavour singlet scalar density amplitude of the nucleon in a full QCD lattice simulation with $n_f=2$ dynamical Wilson fermions at $β=5.6$ on a $16^3 \times 32$ lattice. We find that both contributions are of similar size at the light quark mass. We arrive at the estimate $σ_{πN} = 18(5)$MeV. Its smallness is directly related to the apparent decrease of $u$, $d$ quark masses when unquenching QCD lattice simulations. The $y$ parameter can be estimated from a semi-quenched analysis, in which there are no strange quarks in the sea, the result being $y=0.59(13)$.}

Light and Strange Hadron Spectroscopy with Dynamical Wilson Fermions

We present the final analysis of the light and strange hadron spectra from a full QCD lattice simulation with two degenerate dynamical sea quark flavours at $β= 5.6$ on a $16^3 \times 32$ lattice. Four sets of sea quark masses corresponding to the range $.69 \leq m_π/m_ρ\leq .83$ are investigated. For reference we also ran a quenched simulation at $β_{\sf eff} = 6.0$, which is the point of equal lattice spacing, $a_ρ^{-1}$. In the light sector, we find the chiral extrapolation to physical u- and d- masses to present a major source of uncertainty, comparable to the expected size of unquenching effects. From linear and quadratic fits we can estimate the errors on the hadron masses made from light quarks to be on a 15 % level prior to the continuum extrapolation. For the hadrons with strange valence quark content, the $N_F = 2$ approximation to QCD appears not to cure the well-known failure of quenched QCD to reproduce the physical $K-K^*$ splitting.

An Estimate of alpha_S from Bottomonium in Unquenched QCD

We estimate the strong coupling constant from the perturbative expansion of the plaquette. The scale is set by the 2S-1S and 1P-1S splittings in bottomonium which are computed in NRQCD on dynamical gauge configurations with nf=2 degenerate Wilson quarks at intermediate masses. We have increased the statistics of our spectrum calculation in order to reliably extrapolate in the sea-quark mass. We find a value of alpha_MS(m_Z) = 0.1118(26) which is somewhat lower than previous estimates within NRQCD.

Hybrid and Orbitally Excited Mesons in Full QCD

We present results for the hybrid meson spectrum produced by gluonic excitations in full QCD using Wilson fermions. For the spin-exotic mesons with J^{PC}=1^{-+}, 0^{+-}, and 2^{+-} we find the lightest state to be 1^{-+} with a mass of 1.9(2) GeV. Results obtained for orbitally excited mesons are also presented.

Improving Stochastic Estimator Techniques for Disconnected Diagrams

Disconnected diagrams are expected to be sensitive to the inclusion of dynamical fermions. We present a feasibility study for the observation of such effects on the nucleonic matrix elements of the axial vector current, using SESAM full QCD vacuum configurations with Wilson fermions on $16^3\times 32$ lattices, at $β=5.6$. Starting from the standard methods developed by the Kentucky and Tsukuba groups, we investigate the improvement from various refinements thereof.

Glueballs and string breaking from full QCD

We present results on the static potential, and torelon and glueball masses from simulations of QCD with two flavours of dynamical Wilson fermions on $16^3\times 32$ and $24^3\times 40$ lattices at $β=5.6$.

Hybrid and Orbitally Excited Mesons in Quenched QCD

We use lattice methods to evaluate from first principles the spectrum of hybrid mesons produced by gluonic excitations in quenched QCD with quark masses near the strange quark mass. For the spin-exotic mesons with $J^{PC}=1^{-+},\ 0^{+-}$, and $2^{+-}$ which are not present in the quark model, we determine the lightest state to be $1^{-+}$ with mass of 2.0(2) GeV. Results obtained for orbitally excited mesons are also presented.

SESAM and TXL Results for Wilson Action--A Status Report

Results from two studies of full QCD with two flavours of dynamical Wilson fermions are presented. At beta=5.6, the region 0.83 > m_pi/m_rho > 0.56 at m_pia > 0.23 L^{-1} is explored. The SESAM collaboration has generated ensembles of about 200 statistically independent configurations on a 16^3 x 32-lattice at three different kappa-values and is entering the final phase of data analysis. The TXL simulation on a 24^3 x 40-lattice at two kappa-values has reached half statistics and data analysis has started recently, hence most results presented here are preliminary. The focus of this report is fourfold: we demonstrate that algorithmic improvements like fast Krylov solvers and parallel preconditioning recently introduced can be put into practise in full QCD simulations, we present encouraging observations as to the critical dynamics of the Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm in the approach to the chiral limit, we mention signal improvements of noisy estimator techniques for disconnected diagrams to the pi-N sigma term, and we report on SESAM's results for light hadron spectrum, light quark masses, and heavy quarkonia.

Light Quark Masses with Dynamical Wilson Fermions

We determine the masses of the light and the strange quarks in the $\bar{MS}$-scheme using our high-statistics lattice simulation of QCD with dynamical Wilson fermions. For the light quark mass we find $m^{light}_{\bar{MS}}(2 GeV) = 2.7(2) MeV$, which is lower than in quenched simulations. For the strange quark, in a sea of two dynamical light quarks, we obtain $m^{strange}_{\bar{MS}}(2 GeV) = 140(20) MeV$.

The effect of tree-level and mean-field improvement on the light-hadron spectrum in quenched QCD

We compute the light hadron mass spectrum at beta=5.7 using the O(a) improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert (SW) fermion action with two choices of the clover coefficient: the classical value, c=1, and a mean-field or tadpole-improved estimate c=1.57. We compare our results with those of the GF11 Collaboration who use the Wilson fermion action (c=0). We find that changing c from zero to 1 and 1.57 leads to significant differences in the masses of the chirally extrapolated and strange pseudoscalar and vector mesons, the nucleon, the Delta, and also in the Edinburgh plot. A number of other quantities, for example m_V^2-m_PS^2, J, am_K/am_ρand am_{K^*}/am_ρdo not appear to change significantly. We also investigate the effect of changing the lattice volume from approximately (2 fm)^3 to (2.6 fm)^3. We find that the meson masses are consistent to within one standard deviation and baryon masses are consistent to within two standard deviations.

Hybrid mesons from quenched QCD

We use lattice methods to evaluate from first principles the spectrum of hybrid mesons produced by gluonic excitations in quenched QCD with quark masses near the strange quark mass. For the spin-exotic mesons with $J^{PC}=1^{-+},\ 0^{+-}$, and $2^{+-}$ which are not present in the quark model, we determine the lightest state to be $1^{-+}$ with mass of 2.0(2) GeV.

Orbitally excited and hybrid mesons from the lattice

We discuss in general the construction of gauge-invariant non-local meson operators on the lattice. We use such operators to study the $P$- and $D$-wave mesons as well as hybrid mesons in quenched QCD, with quark masses near the strange quark mass. The resulting spectra are compared with experiment for the orbital excitations. For the states produced by gluonic excitations (hybrid mesons) we find evidence of mixing for non-exotic quantum numbers. We give predictions for masses of the spin-exotic hybrid mesons with $J^{PC}=1^{-+},\ 0^{+-}$, and $2^{+-}$.

Is the Quenched Spectrum in agreement with Experiment?

We analyse the meson spectrum in quenched QCD using lattice gauge theory. By studying hadron propagation with a variety of operators (both smeared and local), we are able to extract the ground state and first excited state masses with confidence. We pay attention to the correlations among the data used in the fits to extract these masses and couplings. We compare the resulting hadron spectrum with experiment and find evidence for a significant departure in the pseudoscalar and vector meson masses.

Efficient Hadronic Operators in Lattice Gauge Theory

We study operators to create hadronic states made of light quarks in quenched lattice gauge theory. We construct non-local gauge-invariant operators which provide information about the spatial extent of the ground state and excited states. The efficiency of the operators is shown by looking at the wave function of the first excited state, which has a node as a function of the spatial extent of the operator. This allows one to obtain an uncontaminated ground state for hadrons.

Efficient Hadronic Operators in Lattice Gauge Theory

We propose the study of non-local gauge invariant operators to obtain an uncontaminated ground state for hadrons. The efficiency of the operators is shown by looking at the wave function of the first excited state, which has a node as a function of spatial extent of the operator.
