Loop-current orderings in SU($N$) two-leg fermionic ladder through duality symmetries

We investigate the formation of loop-current ordered phases in half-filled SU($N$) two-leg fermionic ladders. Using a low-energy approach, we uncover the existence of non-perturbative duality symmetries relating four competing orders. Two of these orders correspond to loop-current ordered phases that spontaneously break the time-reversal symmetry and describe charge currents circulating in a staggered pattern either around the plaquettes or along the diagonals of the ladder. These unconventional phases are shown to be dual to conventional (charge and bond) density-wave phases through an exact density-current duality symmetry existing on the lattice. From a perturbative renormalization group approach, we find that these phases for $N>2$ are stabilized in a half-filled SU($N$) two-leg Hubbard ladder with an additional SU($N$) Hund's interaction. The effect of a small doping on these phases is also discussed.

"Haldane" phases with ultracold fermionic atoms in double-well optical lattices

We propose to realize one-dimensional topological phases protected by SU($N$) symmetry using alkali or alkaline-earth atoms loaded into a bichromatic optical lattice. We derive a realistic model for this system and investigate it theoretically. Depending on the parity of $N$, two different classes of symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases are stabilized at half-filling for physical parameters of the model. For even $N$, the celebrated spin-1 Haldane phase and its generalization to SU($N$) are obtained with no local symmetry breaking. In stark contrast, at least for $N=3$, a new class of SPT phases, dubbed chiral Haldane phases, that spontaneously break inversion symmetry, emerge with a two-fold ground-state degeneracy. The latter ground states with open-boundary conditions are characterized by different left and right boundary spins which are related by conjugation. Our results show that topological phases are within close reach of the latest experiments on cold fermions in optical lattices.

Lattice spin models for non-Abelian Chiral Spin Liquids

We suggest a class of two-dimensional lattice spin Hamiltonians describing non-Abelian SU(2) chiral spin liquids - spin-analogues of fractional non-Abelian quantum Hall states- with gapped bulk and gapless chiral edge excitations described by the SU(2)$_n$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten conformal field theory. The models are constructed from an array of a generalized spin-$n/2$ ladders with multi-spin exchange interaction which are coupled by isolated spins. Such models allow a controllable analytic treatment starting from the one-dimensional limit and are characterized by a bulk gap and non-Abelian SU(2)$_n$ gapless edge excitations.

Non-Abelian SU(N-1)-singlet fractional quantum Hall states from coupled wires

The construction of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states from the two-dimensional array of quantum wires provides a useful way to control strong interactions in microscopic models and has been successfully applied to the Laughlin, Moore-Read, and Read-Rezayi states. We extend this construction to the Abelian and non-Abelian $SU(N-1)$-singlet FQH states at filling fraction $ν=k(N-1)/[N+k(N-1)m]$ labeled by integers $k$ and $m$, which are potentially realized in multi-component quantum Hall systems or $SU(N)$ spin systems. Utilizing the bosonization approach and conformal field theory (CFT), we show that their bulk quasiparticles and gapless edge excitations are both described by an $(N-1)$-component free-boson CFT and the $SU(N)_k/[U(1)]^{N-1}$ CFT known as the Gepner parafermion. Their generalization to different filling fractions is also proposed. In addition, we argue possible applications of these results to two kinds of lattice systems: bosons interacting via occupation-dependent correlated hoppings and an $SU(N)$ Heisenberg model.

Phases of one-dimensional SU(N) cold atomic Fermi gases --from molecular Luttinger liquids to topological phases

Alkaline-earth and ytterbium cold atomic gases make it possible to simulate SU(N)-symmetric fermionic systems in a very controlled fashion. Such a high symmetry is expected to give rise to a variety of novel phenomena ranging from molecular Luttinger liquids to (symmetry- protected) topological phases. We review some of the phases that can be stabilized in a one dimensional lattice. The physics of this multicomponent Fermi gas turns out to be much richer and more exotic than in the standard SU(2) case. For N > 2, the phase diagram is quite rich already in the case of the single-band model, including a molecular Luttinger liquid (with dominant superfluid instability in the N-particle channel) for incommensurate fillings, as well as various Mott-insulating phases occurring at commensurate fillings. Particular attention will be paid to the cases with additional orbital degree of freedom (which is accessible experimentally either by taking into account two atomic states or by putting atoms in the p-band levels). We introduce two microscopic models which are relevant for these cases and discuss their symmetries and strong coupling limits. More intriguing phase diagrams are then presented including, for instance, symmetry protected topological phases characterized by non-trivial edge states.

One-dimensional two-orbital SU(N) ultracold fermionic quantum gases at incommensurate filling: a low-energy approach

We investigate the zero-temperature phase diagram of two-orbital SU(N) fermionic models at incommensurate filling which are directly relevant to strontium and ytterbium ultracold atoms loading into a one-dimensional optical lattice. Using a low-energy approach that takes into account explicitly the SU(N) symmetry, we find that a spectral gap for the nuclear-spin degrees of freedom is formed for generic interactions. Several phases with one or two gapless modes are then stabilized which describe the competition between different density instabilities. In stark contrast to the N=2 case, no dominant pairing instabilities emerge and the leading superfluid one is rather formed from bound states of 2N fermions.

Massless renormalization group flow in SU(N)$_k$ perturbed conformal field theory

We investigate the infrared properties of SU(N)$_k$ conformal field theory perturbed by its adjoint primary field in 1+1 dimensions. The latter field theory is shown to govern the low-energy properties of various SU(N) spin chain problems. In particular, using a mapping onto k-leg SU(N) spin ladder, a massless renormalization group flow to SU(N)$_1$ criticality is predicted when N and k have no common divisor. The latter result extends the well-known massless flow between SU(2)$_k$ and SU(2)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten theories when k is odd in connection to the Haldane's conjecture on SU(2) Heisenberg spin chains. A direct approach is presented in the simplest N=3 and k=2 case to investigate the existence of this massless flow.

Competing superconducting instabilities in the one-dimensional p-band degenerate cold fermionic system

The zero-temperature phase diagram of $p$-orbital two-component fermionic system loaded into a one-dimensional optical lattice is mapped out by means of analytical and numerical techniques. It is shown that the $p$-band model away from half-filling hosts various competing superconducting phases for attractive and repulsive interactions. At quarter filling, we analyze the possible formation of incompressible Mott phases and in particular for repulsive interactions, we find the occurrence of a Mott transition with the formation of fully gapped bond-ordering waves.

Phase diagrams of one-dimensional half-filled two-orbital SU(N) cold fermions systems

We investigate possible realizations of exotic SU(N) symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phases with alkaline-earth cold fermionic atoms loaded into one-dimensional optical lattices. A thorough study of two-orbital generalizations of the standard SU(N) Fermi-Hubbard model, directly relevant to recent experiments, is performed. Using state-of-the-art analytical and numerical techniques, we map out the zero-temperature phase diagrams at half-filling and identify several Mott-insulating phases. While some of them are rather conventional (non-degenerate, charge-density-wave or spin-Peierls like), we also identify, for even-N, two distinct types of SPT phases: an orbital-Haldane phase, analogous to a spin-N/2 Haldane phase, and a topological SU(N) phase, which we fully characterize by its entanglement properties. We also propose sets of non-local order parameters that characterize the SU(N) topological phases found here.

Two-leg SU(2n) spin ladder: A low-energy effective field theory approach

We present a field theory analysis of a model of two SU(2n)-invariant magnetic chains coupled by a generic interaction preserving time reversal and inversion symmetry. Contrary to the SU(2)-invariant case the zero-temperature phase diagram of such two-leg spin ladder does not contain topological phases. Only generalized Valence Bond Solid phases are stabilized when n>1 with different wave vectors and ground-state degeneracies. In particular, we find a phase which is made of a cluster of 2n spins put in an SU(2n) singlet state. For n=3, this cluster phase is relevant to ytterbium ultracold atoms, with an emergent SU(6) symmetry, loaded in double well optical lattice.

Quantum phase transitions in multileg spin ladders with ring exchange

Four-spin exchange interaction has been raising intriguing questions regarding the exotic phase transitions it induces in two-dimensional quantum spin systems. In this context, we investigate the effects of a cyclic four-spin exchange in the quasi-1D limit by considering a general N-leg spin ladder. We show by means of a low-energy approach that, depending on its sign, this ring exchange interaction can engender either a staggered or a uniform dimerization from the conventional phases of spin ladders. The resulting quantum phase transition is found to be described by the SU(2)_N conformal field theory. This result, as well as the fractional value of the central charge at the transition, is further confirmed by a large-scale numerical study performed by means of Exact Diagonalization and Density Matrix Renormalization Group approaches for N \le 4.

Thermodynamics in the vicinity of a relativistic quantum critical point in 2+1 dimensions

We study the thermodynamics of the relativistic quantum O($N$) model in two space dimensions. In the vicinity of the zero-temperature quantum critical point (QCP), the pressure can be written in the scaling form $P(T)=P(0)+N(T^3/c^2)\calF_N(Δ/T)$ where $c$ is the velocity of the excitations at the QCP and $Δ$ is a characteristic zero-temperature energy scale. Using both a large-$N$ approach to leading order and the nonperturbative renormalization group, we compute the universal scaling function $\calF_N$. For small values of $N$ ($N\lesssim 10$) we find that $\calF_N(x)$ is nonmonotonous in the quantum critical regime ($|x|\lesssim 1$) with a maximum near $x=0$. The large-$N$ approach -- if properly interpreted -- is a good approximation both in the renormalized classical ($x\lesssim -1$) and quantum disordered ($x\gtrsim 1$) regimes, but fails to describe the nonmonotonous behavior of $\calF_N$ in the quantum critical regime. We discuss the renormalization-group flows in the various regimes near the QCP and make the connection with the quantum nonlinear sigma model in the renormalized classical regime. We compute the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature in the quantum O(2) model and find that in the vicinity of the QCP the universal ratio $\Tkt/ρ_s(0)$ is very close to $π/2$, implying that the stiffness $ρ_s(\Tkt^-)$ at the transition is only slightly reduced with respect to the zero-temperature stiffness $ρ_s(0)$. Finally, we briefly discuss the experimental determination of the universal function $\calF_2$ from the pressure of a Bose gas in an optical lattice near the superfluid--Mott-insulator transition.

Symmetry-protected topological phases of alkaline-earth cold fermionic atoms in one dimension

We investigate the existence of symmetry-protected topological phases in one-dimensional alkaline-earth cold fermionic atoms with general half-integer nuclear spin I at half filling. In this respect, some orbital degrees of freedom are required. They can be introduced by considering either the metastable excited state of alkaline-earth atoms or the p-band of the optical lattice. Using complementary techniques, we show that SU(2) Haldane topological phases are stabilised from these orbital degrees of freedom. On top of these phases, we find the emergence of topological phases with enlarged SU(2I+1) symmetry which depend only on the nuclear spin degrees of freedom. The main physical properties of the latter phases are further studied using a matrix-product state approach. On the one hand, we find that these phases are symmetry-protected topological phases, with respect to inversion symmetry, when I=1/2,5/2,9/2,..., which is directly relevant to ytterbium and strontium cold fermions. On the other hand, for the other values of I(=half-odd integer), these topological phases are stabilised only in the presence of exact SU(2I+1)-symmetry.

Exotic Quantum Criticality in One-Dimensional Coupled Dipolar Bosons Tubes

The competition between intertube hopping processes and density-density interactions is investigated in one-dimensional quantum dipolar bosons systems of N coupled tubes at zero temperature. Using a phenomenological bosonization approach, we show that the resulting competition leads to an exotic quantum phase transition described by a U(1) x Z_N conformal field theory with a fractional central charge. The emerging Z_N parafermionic critical degrees of freedom are highly nontrivial in terms of the original atoms or polar molecules of the model. We further determine the main physical properties of the quantum critical point in a double-tube system which has central charge c=3/2. In triple-tube systems, we show that the competition between the two antagonistic processes is related to the physics of the two-dimensional Z_3 chiral Potts model. This work opens the possibility to study the exotic properties of the Z_N parafermions in the context of ultracold quantum Bose gases.

Semiclassical Approach to Competing Orders in Two-leg Spin Ladder with Ring-Exchange

We investigate the competition between different orders in the two-leg spin ladder with a ring-exchange interaction by means of a bosonic approach. The latter is defined in terms of spin-1 hardcore bosons which treat the Néel and vector chirality order parameters on an equal footing. A semiclassical approach of the resulting model describes the phases of the two-leg spin ladder with a ring-exchange. In particular, we derive the low-energy effective actions which govern the physical properties of the rung-singlet and dominant vector chirality phases. As a by-product of our approach, we reveal the mutual induction phenomenon between spin and chirality with, for instance, the emergence of a vector-chirality phase from the application of a magnetic field in bilayer systems coupled by four-spin exchange interactions.

Competing orders in one-dimensional half-filled multicomponent fermionic cold atoms: The Haldane-charge conjecture

We investigate the nature of the Mott-insulating phases of half-filled 2N-component fermionic cold atoms loaded into a one-dimensional optical lattice. By means of conformal field theory techniques and large-scale DMRG calculations, we show that the phase diagram strongly depends on the parity of $N$. First, we single out charged, spin-singlet, degrees of freedom, that carry a pseudo-spin ${\cal S}=N/2$ allowing to formulate a Haldane conjecture: for attractive interactions, we establish the emergence of Haldane insulating phases when $N$ is even, whereas a metallic behavior is found when $N$ is odd. We point out that the $N=1,2$ cases do \emph{not} have the generic properties of each family. The metallic phase for $N$ odd and larger than 1 has a quasi-long range singlet pairing ordering with an interesting edge-state structure. Moreover, the properties of the Haldane insulating phases with even $N$ further depend on the parity of N/2. In this respect, within the low-energy approach, we argue that the Haldane phases with N/2 even are not topologically protected but equivalent to a topologically trivial insulating phase and thus confirm the recent conjecture put forward by Pollmann {\it et al.} [Pollmann {\it et al.}, arXiv:0909.4059 (2009)].

Quantum criticality in the SO(5) bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg chain

The zero-temperature properties of the SO(5) bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg spin chain are investigated by means of a low-energy approach and large scale numerical calculations. In sharp contrast to the spin-1 SO(3) Heisenberg chain, we show that the SO(5) Heisenberg spin chain is dimerized with a two-fold degenerate ground state. On top of this gapful phase, we find the emergence of a non-degenerate gapped phase with hidden (Z$_2$ $\times$ Z$_2$)$^2$ symmetry and spin-3/2 edge states that can be understood from a SO(5) AKLT wave function. We derive a low-energy theory describing the quantum critical point which separates these two gapped phases. It is shown and confirmed numerically that this quantum critical point belongs to the SO(5)$_1$ universality class.

Competing orders in the generalized Hund chain model at half-filling

By using a combination of several non-perturbative techniques -- a one-dimensional field theoretical approach together with numerical simulations using density matrix renormalization group -- we present an extensive study of the phase diagram of the generalized Hund model at half-filling. This model encloses the physics of various strongly correlated one-dimensional systems, such as two-leg electronic ladders, ultracold degenerate fermionic gases carrying a large hyperfine spin 3/2, other cold gases like Ytterbium 171 or alkaline-earth condensates. A particular emphasis is laid on the possibility to enumerate and exhaust the eight possible Mott insulating phases by means of a duality approach. We exhibit a one-to-one correspondence between these phases and those of the two-leg Hubbard ladder with interchain hopping. Our results obtained from a weak coupling analysis are in remarkable quantitative agreement with our numerical results carried out at moderate coupling.
