Theoretical considerations about heavy-ion fusion in potential scattering

We carefully compare the one-dimensional WKB barrier tunneling model, and the one-channel Sch\"odinger equation with a complex optical potential calculation of heavy-ion fusion, for a light and a heavy system. It is found that the major difference between the two approaches occurs around the critical energy, above which the effective potential for the grazing angular momentum ceases to exhibit a pocket. The value of this critical energy is shown to be strongly dependent on the nuclear potential at short distances, on the inside region of the Coulomb barrier, and this dependence is much more important for heavy systems. Therefore the nuclear fusion process is expected to provide information on the nuclear potential in this inner region. We compare calculations with available data to show that the results are consistent with this expectation.

Coexistence of pressure-induced structural phases in bulk black phosphorus: a combined x-ray diffraction and Raman study up to 18 GPa

We report a study of the structural phase transitions induced by pressure in bulk black phosphorus by using both synchrotron x-ray diffraction for pressures up to 12.2 GPa and Raman spectroscopy up to 18.2 GPa. Very recently black phosphorus attracted large attention because of the unique properties of fewlayers samples (phosphorene), but some basic questions are still open in the case of the bulk system. As concerning the presence of a Raman spectrum above 10 GPa, which should not be observed in an elemental simple cubic system, we propose a new explanation by attributing a key role to the non-hydrostatic conditions occurring in Raman experiments. Finally, a combined analysis of Raman and XRD data allowed us to obtain quantitative information on presence and extent of coexistences between different structural phases from ~5 up to ~15 GPa. This information can have an important role in theoretical studies on pressure-induced structural and electronic phase transitions in black phosphorus.

Assessing the adequacy of the bare optical potential in near-barrier fusion calculation

We critically examine the differences among the different bare nuclear interactions used in near-barrier heavy ion fusion analysis and Coupled-Channels calculations, and discuss the possibility of extracting the barrier parameters of the bare potential from above-barrier data. We show that the choice of the bare potential may be critical for the analysis of the fusion cross sections. We show also that the barrier parameters taken from above barrier data may be very wrong.

Bound States in the Continuum in Two-Dimensional Serial Structures

We investigate the occurrence of bound states in the continuum (BIC's) in serial structures of quantum dots coupled to an external waveguide, when some characteristic length of the system is changed. By resorting to a multichannel scattering-matrix approach, we show that BIC's do actually occur in two--dimensional serial structures, and that they are a robust effect. When a BIC is produced in a two--dot system, it also occurs for several coupled dots. We also show that the complex dependence of the conductance upon the geometry of the device allows for a simple picture in terms of the resonance pole motion in the multi--sheeted Riemann energy surface. Finally, we show that in correspondence to a zero--width state for the open system one has a multiplet of degenerate eigenenergies for the associated closed serial system, thereby generalizing results previously obtained for single dots and two-dot devices.

Fano Resonances in Stubbed Quantum Waveguides with Impurities

We consider T--shaped, two--dimensional quantum waveguides containing attractive or repulsive impurities with a smooth, realistic shape, and study how the resonance behavior of the total conductance depends upon the strength of the defect potential and the geometry of the device. The resonance parameters are determined locating the relevant S-matrix poles in the Riemann energy surface. The total scattering operator is obtained from the S-matrices of the various constituent segments of the device through the *-product composition rule. This allows for a numerically stable evaluation of the scattering matrix and of the resonance parameters.

S-Matrix Poles Close to Thresholds in Confined Geometries

We have studied the behavior of the S-matrix poles near threshold for quantum waveguides coupled to a cavity with a defect. We emphasize the occurrence of both dominant and shadow poles on the various sheets of the energy Riemann surface, and show that the changes of the total conductivity near threshold as the cavity's width changes can be explained in terms of dominant to shadow pole transitions.

Energy Dependence of Breakup Cross Sections of Halo Nucleus 8B and Effective Interactions

We study the energy dependence of the cross sections for nucleon removal of 8B projectiles. It is shown that the Glauber model calculations with nucleon-nucleon t-matrix reproduce well the energy dependence of the breakup cross sections of 8B. A DWBA model for the breakup cross section is also proposed and results are compared with those of the Glauber model. We show that to obtain an agreement between the DWBA calculations, the Glauber formalism, and the experimental data, it is necessary to modify the energy behavior of the effective interaction. In particular, the breakup potential has a quite different energy dependence than the strong absorption potential.

Fermi and Gamow-Teller Strength in Charge Exchange with Radioactive Beams

At forward angles, and bombarding energies E > 200 MeV, the (p,n) and (n,p) reactions are thought to be directly proportional to the Gamow-Teller transition strengths in the nuclei. Assuming that this relationship also holds for charge exchange induced by high-energy heavy ions, it would be very useful in studies with radioactive beams. Contrary to this expectation, we show that the determination of Gamow-Teller and Fermi matrix elements from heavy-ion charge-exchange at forward angles is very inaccurate.
