Study of scintillation light collection, production and propagation in a 4 tonne dual-phase LArTPC

The $3 \times 1 \times 1$ m$^3$ demonstrator is a dual phase liquid argon time projection chamber that has recorded cosmic rays events in 2017 at CERN. The light signal in these detectors is crucial to provide precise timing capabilities. The performances of the photon detection system, composed of five PMTs, are discussed. The collected scintillation and electroluminescence light created by passing particles has been studied in various detector conditions. In particular, the scintillation light production and propagation processes have been analyzed and compared to simulations, improving the understanding of some liquid argon properties.

The TT-PET Data Acquisition and Trigger System

This paper describes the data acquisition and trigger system of the Thin Time-of-flight PET (TT-PET) scanner. The system is designed to read out in the order of 1000 pixel sensors used in the scanner and to provide a reference timing signal to each sensor in order to measure time differences of better than 30 ps. This clock distribution is measured to have a jitter of less than 4 ps at the sensors. Collected data is locally processed before being forwarded to storage. Data flow as well as control, configuration and monitoring aspects are are also addressed.

A 4 tonne demonstrator for large-scale dual-phase liquid argon time projection chambers

A 10 kilo-tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC is one of the detector options considered for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). The detector technology relies on amplification of the ionisation charge in ultra-pure argon vapour and oers several advantages compared to the traditional single-phase liquid argon TPCs. A 4.2 tonne dual-phase liquid argon TPC prototype, the largest of its kind, with an active volume of 3x1x1 $m^3$ has been constructed and operated at CERN. In this paper we describe in detail the experimental setup and detector components as well as report on the operation experience. We also present the first results on the achieved charge amplification, prompt scintillation and electroluminescence detection, and purity of the liquid argon from analyses of a collected sample of cosmic ray muons.

Chemical and valence reconstruction at the surface of SmB6 revealed with resonant soft x-ray reflectometry

Samarium hexaboride (SmB$_6$), a Kondo insulator with mixed valence, has recently attracted much attention as a possible host for correlated topological surface states. Here, we use a combination of x-ray absorption and reflectometry techniques, backed up with a theoretical model for the resonant $M_{4,5}$ absorption edge of Sm and photoemission data, to establish laterally averaged chemical and valence depth profiles at the surface of SmB$_6$. We show that upon cleaving, the highly polar (001) surface of SmB$_6$ undergoes substantial chemical and valence reconstruction, resulting in boron termination and a Sm$^{3+}$ dominated sub-surface region. Whereas at room temperature, the reconstruction occurs on a time scale of less than two hours, it takes about 24 hours below 50 K. The boron termination is eventually established, irrespective of the initial termination. Our findings reconcile earlier depth resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling spectroscopy studies performed at different temperatures and are important for better control of polarity and, as a consequence, surface states in this system.

Valence Characterization of Surface and Subsurface Region in SmB6

Samarium hexaboride (SmB6), which lies in the mixed valence regime in the Anderson model, has been predicted to possess topologically protected surface states. The intensive investigations on SmB6 have brought up the long standing questions about the discrepancy between the surface and bulk electronic properties in rare-earth compounds in general. Here, we investigate and eventually clarify this discrepancy in the particular case of SmB6 by the photoemission core-level spectra. We focus on the change in both Sm and B states depending on time, temperature, probing depth, and surface termination on the cleaved (100) surface. Our spectra show that the unusual time-dependent change in the Sm valence occurs within a period of hours, which is not related to the adsorption of residual gases. Moreover, we observe a reduction of the surface feature in the B and Sm states on the same timescale accompanied by the formation of a subsurface region. Thus, it indicates the relatively slow charge redistribution between the surface and subsurface regions. Our findings demonstrate that the f states is strongly involved in the surface relaxation.

Universal properties of the near-gap spectra of SmB6: dynamical mean-field calculations and photoemission experiments

Samarium hexaboride (SmB6) has been presumed to show a topological Kondo insulating state consisting of fully occupied quasiparticle bands in the concept of a Fermi liquid. This gap emerging below a small coherence temperature is the ultimate sign of coherence for a many-body system, which in addition induces a non-trivial topology. Here, we demonstrate that just one energy scale governs the gap formation in SmB6, which supports the Fermi liquid description. The temperature dependence of the gap formation in the mixed valence regime is captured within the dynamical mean field (DMFT) approximation to the periodic Anderson model (PAM). The scaling property of the model with the topological coherence temperature provides a strong connection to the photoemission spectra of SmB6. Our results suggest a simple way to compare a model study and an experiment result for heavy fermion insulators.

A light readout system for gas TPCs

A novel light detection scheme has been tested for use in medium-pressure gas TPCs, in view of rare events searches in low energy particle physics. It has the advantage of minimal interference with the ionization collection system, used for track imaging. It provides an absolute time reference, which allows an absolute determination of the Z coordinate of events, along the direction of the drift field. This makes possible a fiducial cut along the Z-axis, allowing to reduce the background from the ends of the drift volume.

The importance of Charge Fluctuations for the Topological Phase in SmB$_6$

The discovery of topologically non-trivial states in band insulators has induced an extensive search for topological phase in strongly correlated electron systems. In particular, samarium hexaboride (SmB$_6$) has drawn much attention as it might represent a new class of condensed matter called topological Kondo insulator. Kondo insulators (KI) can have non-trivial Z$_2$ topology because the energy gap opens at the Fermi energy ($E_F$) by hybridization between an odd- parity renormalized $f$ band and an even- parity conduction $d$ band. However, the characteristics of SmB$_6$ deviate from the conventional KI because its gap is insensitive to doping and pressure. Thus, it is unclear what makes the gap of SmB$_6$ different from that of KI, and how the band inversion features occur. In this manuscript, we demonstrate the importance of charge fluctuations in SmB$_6$. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) results reveal that with decreasing temperature the bottom of the $d$-$f$ hybridized band at the $\bar{\text{X}}$ point gradually shifts from below to above $E_F$. This shift accompanies a redistribution of spectral weight from the upper to the lower quasiparticle band, and reflects the change in both carrier density and the number of localized $f$ electron. Moreover, because this hybridized band is predicted to have odd parity and to induce a non-trivial $Z_{2}$ topology, we compare our ARPES spectra with theoretical surface band structures and find signatures of topological surface states. Therefore, our results indicate that SmB$_6$ is a charge fluctuating topological insulator having the odd-parity hybridized band above $E_F$ at the $X$ point. This demonstrates that the charge fluctuations do not only drive the insulating bulk phase but also the non-trivial topological phase.

Spin-polarized electric currents in diluted magnetic semiconductor heterostructures induced by terahertz and microwave radiation

We report on the study of spin-polarized electric currents in diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) quantum wells subjected to an in-plane external magnetic field and illuminated by microwave or terahertz radiation. The effect is studied in (Cd,Mn)Te/(Cd,Mg)Te quantum wells (QWs) and (In,Ga)As/InAlAs:Mn QWs belonging to the well known II-VI and III-V DMS material systems, as well as, in heterovalent AlSb/InAs/(Zn,Mn)Te QWs which represent a promising combination of II-VI and III-V semiconductors. Experimental data and developed theory demonstrate that the photocurrent originates from a spin-dependent scattering of free carriers by static defects or phonons in the Drude absorption of radiation and subsequent relaxation of carriers. We show that in DMS structures the efficiency of the current generation is drastically enhanced compared to non-magnetic semiconductors. The enhancement is caused by the exchange interaction of carrier spins with localized spins of magnetic ions resulting, on the one hand, in the giant Zeeman spin-splitting, and, on the other hand, in the spin-dependent carrier scattering by localized Mn2+ ions polarized by an external magnetic field.

Interplay of spin and orbital magnetogyrotropic photogalvanic effects in InSb/AlInSb quantum well structures

We report on the observation of linear and circular magnetogyrotropic photogalvanic effects in InSb/AlInSb quantum well structures. We show that intraband (Drude-like) absorption of terahertz radiation in the heterostructures causes a dc electric current in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. The photocurrent behavior upon variation of the magnetic field strength, temperature and wavelength is studied. We show that at moderate magnetic fields the photocurrent exhibits a typical linear field dependence. At high magnetic fields, however, it becomes nonlinear and inverses its sign. The experimental results are analyzed in terms of the microscopic models based on asymmetric relaxation of carriers in the momentum space. We demonstrate that the observed nonlinearity of the photocurrent is caused by the large Zeeman spin splitting in InSb/AlInSb structures and an interplay of the spin-related and spin-independent roots of the magnetogyrotropic photogalvanic effect.

Diluted magnetic semiconductor heterostructure AlSb/InAs/ZnMnTe with giant Zeeman effect for two dimensional electrons in InAs

A new approach to the growth of diluted magnetic semiconductors with two dimensional electron gas in InAs quantum well has been developed. The method is based on molecular-beam epitaxy of coherent "hybrid" AlSb/InAs/(Zn,Mn)Te heterostructures with a III-V/II-VI interface inside. The giant Zeeman splitting of the InAs conduction band caused by exchange interaction with Mn2+ ions has been proved by measuring the microwave radiation induced spin polarized electric currents.

A prototype liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber for the study of UV laser multi-photonic ionization

This paper describes the design, realization and operation of a prototype liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LAr TPC) detector dedicated to the development of a novel online monitoring and calibration system exploiting UV laser beams. In particular, the system is intended to measure the lifetime of the primary ionization in LAr, in turn related to the LAr purity level. This technique could be exploited by present and next generation large mass LAr TPCs for which monitoring of the performance and calibration plays an important role. Results from the first measurements are presented together with some considerations and outlook.

Radiation Induced Effects in a Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor : The Mimosa8 Chip

We have studied the effects of ionizing irradiation from a 60Co source and the effects of neutron irradiation on a Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor Chip(MIMOSA8). A previous report was devoted solely to the neutron-induced effects. We show that extended defects due to the neutron damage changes the distribution of the pixels pedestals. This is mainly due to the increase of the dark generation current due to the presence of deep traps in the depleted zones of the sensors. Alternatively, the exposure to ionizing irradiation increases the pedestals in a more homogeneous way, this coming from the generation of interface states at the Si/SiO2 interface supplemented by the presence of positively charged traps in the oxides. the sensors' leakage current is then increased. We discuss the results in view of increasing the radiation-hardness of the MAPS, bearing in mind that these chips were not designed with any rad-tol layout technique.

Higgs Physics at LEP2

In this report we review the prospects for Higgs physics at LEP2. The theoretical aspects and the phenomenology of Higgs particles are discussed within the Standard Model (SM) and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM). The experimental search techniques are described and the discovery limits for Higgs bosons in the LEP2 energy range are summarized. In addition, opportunities of detecting Higgs particles in non-minimal extensions of the SM and the MSSM are investigated.
