Short branch cut approximation in $2$D Hydrodynamics with Free Surface

A potential motion of ideal incompressible fluid with a free surface and infinite depth is considered in two-dimensional geometry. A time-dependent conformal mapping of the lower complex half-plane of the auxiliary complex variable $w$ into the area filled with fluid is performed with the real line of $w$ mapped into the free fluid's surface. The fluid dynamics can be fully characterized by the motion of the complex singularities in the analytical continuation of both the conformal mapping and the complex velocity. We consider the short branch cut approximation of the dynamics with the small parameter being the ratio of the length of the branch cut to the distance between its center and the real line of $w$. We found that the fluid dynamics in that approximation is reduced to the complex Hopf equation for the complex velocity coupled with the complex transport equation for the conformal mapping. These equations are fully integrable by characteristics producing the infinite family of solutions, including the pairs of moving square root branch points. The solutions are compared with the simulations of the fully nonlinear Eulerian dynamics giving excellent agreement even when the small parameter approaches about one.

Explosive Development of the Quantum Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability on the He-II Free Surface

We analyze nonlinear dynamics of the Kelvin-Helmholtz quantum instability of the He-II free surface, which evolves during counterpropagation of the normal and superfluid components of liquid helium. It is shown that in the vicinity of the linear stability threshold, the evolution of the boundary is described by the $|ϕ|^4$ Klein-Gordon equation for the complex amplitude of the excited wave with cubic nonlinearity. It is important that for any ratio of the densities of the helium component, the nonlinearity plays a destabilizing role, accelerating the linear instability evolution of the boundary. The conditions for explosive growth of perturbations of the free surface are formulated using the integral inequality approach. Analogy between the Kelvin-Helmholtz quantum instability and electrohydrodynamic instability of the free surface of liquid helium charged by electrons is considered.

Poles and branch cuts in free surface hydrodynamics

We consider the motion of ideal incompressible fluid with free surface. We analyzed the exact fluid dynamics though the time-dependent conformal mapping $z=x+iy=z(w,t)$ of the lower complex half plane of the conformal variable $w$ into the area occupied by fluid. We established the exact results on the existence vs. nonexistence of the pole and power law branch point solutions for $1/z_w$ and the complex velocity. We also proved the nonexistence of the time-dependent rational solution of that problem for the second and the first order moving pole.

Dynamics of Poles in 2D Hydrodynamics with Free Surface: New Constants of Motion

We address a problem of potential motion of ideal incompressible fluid with a free surface and infinite depth in two dimensional geometry with gravity forces and surface tension. A time-dependent conformal mapping z(w,t) of the lower complex half-plane of the variable w into the area filled with fluid is performed. We study the dynamics of singularities of both z(w,t) and the complex fluid potential Pi(w,t) in the upper complex half-plane of w. We show the existence of solutions with an arbitrary finite number N of complex poles in z_w(w,t) and Pi_w(w,t) which are the derivatives of z(w,t) and Pi(w,t) over w. The orders of poles can be arbitrary for zero surface tension while all orders are even for nonzero surface tension. We find that the residues of z_w(w,t) at these N points are new, previously unknown constants of motion, see also Ref. V.E. Zakharov and A. I. Dyachenko, arXiv:1206.2046 (2012) for the preliminary results. All these constants of motion commute with each other in the sense of underlying Hamiltonian dynamics. In absence of both gravity and surface tension, the residues of Pi_w(w,t) are also the constants of motion while nonzero gravity g ensures a trivial linear dependence of these residues on time. A Laurent series expansion of both z_w(w,t) and Pi_w(w,t) at each poles position reveals an existence of additional integrals of motion for poles of the second order. If all poles are simple then the number of independent real integrals of motion is 4N for zero gravity and 4N-1 for nonzero gravity. For the second order poles we found 6N motion integral for zero gravity and 6N-1 for nonzero gravity. We suggest that the existence of these nontrivial constants of motion provides an argument in support of the conjecture of complete integrability of free surface hydrodynamics in deep water.

Non-Canonical Hamiltonian Structure and Poisson Bracket for 2D Hydrodynamics with Free Surface

We consider Euler equations for potential flow of ideal incompressible fluid with a free surface and infinite depth in two dimensional geometry. Both gravity forces and surface tension are taken int account. A time-dependent conformal mapping is used which maps a lower complex half plane of the auxiliary complex variable $w$ into a fluid's area with the real line of $w$ mapped into the free fluid's surface. We reformulate the exact Eulerian dynamics through a non-canonical nonlocal Hamiltonian structure for a pair of the Hamiltonian variables. These two variables are the imaginary part of the conformal map and the fluid's velocity potential both evaluated of fluid's free surface. The corresponding Poisson bracket is non-degenerate, i.e. it does not have any Casimir invariant. Any two functionals of the conformal mapping commute with respect to the Poisson bracket. New Hamiltonian structure is a generalization of the canonical Hamiltonian structure of Ref. V.E. Zakharov, J. Appl. Mech. Tech. Phys. 9, 190 (1968) which is valid only for solutions for which the natural surface parametrization is single valued, i.e. each value of the horizontal coordinate corresponds only to a single point on the free surface. In contrast, new non-canonical Hamiltonian equations are valid for arbitrary nonlinear solutions (including multiple-valued natural surface parametrization) and are equivalent to Euler equations. We also consider a generalized hydrodynamics with the additional physical terms in the Hamiltonian beyond the Euler equations. In that case we identified powerful reductions which allowed to find general classes of particular solutions.

Branch cuts of Stokes wave on deep water. Part I: Numerical solution and Padé approximation

Complex analytical structure of Stokes wave for two-dimensional potential flow of the ideal incompressible fluid with free surface and infinite depth is analyzed. Stokes wave is the fully nonlinear periodic gravity wave propagating with the constant velocity. Simulations with the quadruple and variable precisions are performed to find Stokes wave with high accuracy and study the Stokes wave approaching its limiting form with $2π/3$ radians angle on the crest. A conformal map is used which maps a free fluid surface of Stokes wave into the real line with fluid domain mapped into the lower complex half-plane. The Stokes wave is fully characterized by the complex singularities in the upper complex half-plane. These singularities are addressed by rational (Padé) interpolation of Stokes wave in the complex plane. Convergence of Padé approximation to the density of complex poles with the increase of the numerical precision and subsequent increase of the number of approximating poles reveals that the only singularities of Stokes wave are branch points connected by branch cuts. The converging densities are the jumps across the branch cuts. There is one branch cut per horizontal spatial period $λ$ of Stokes wave. Each branch cut extends strictly vertically above the corresponding crest of Stokes wave up to complex infinity. The lower end of branch cut is the square-root branch point located at the distance $v_c$ from the real line corresponding to the fluid surface in conformal variables. The limiting Stokes wave emerges as the singularity reaches the fluid surface. Tables of Padé approximation for Stokes waves of different heights are provided. These tables allow to recover the Stokes wave with the relative accuracy of at least $10^{-26}$. The tables use from several poles to about hundred poles for highly nonlinear Stokes wave with $v_c/λ\sim 10^{-6}.$

The complex singularity of a Stokes wave

Two-dimensional potential flow of the ideal incompressible fluid with free surface and infinite depth can be described by a conformal map of the fluid domain into the complex lower half-plane. Stokes wave is the fully nonlinear gravity wave propagating with the constant velocity. The increase of the scaled wave height $H/λ$ from the linear limit $H/λ=0$ to the critical value $H_{max}/λ$ marks the transition from the limit of almost linear wave to a strongly nonlinear limiting Stokes wave. Here $H$ is the wave height and $λ$ is the wavelength. We simulated fully nonlinear Euler equations, reformulated in terms of conformal variables, to find Stokes waves for different wave heights. Analyzing spectra of these solutions we found in conformal variables, at each Stokes wave height, the distance $v_c$ from the lowest singularity in the upper half-plane to the real line which corresponds to the fluid free surface. We also identified that this singularity is the square-root branch point. The limiting Stokes wave emerges as the singularity reaches the fluid surface. From the analysis of data for $v_c\to 0$ we suggest a new power law scaling $v_c\propto (H_{max}-H)^{3/2}$ as well as new estimate $H_{max}/λ\simeq 0.1410633$.

On blowup dynamics in the Keller-Segel model of chemotaxis

We investigate the (reduced) Keller-Segel equations modeling chemotaxis of bio-organisms. We present a formal derivation and partial rigorous results of the blowup dynamics of solution of these equations describing the chemotactic aggregation of the organisms. Our results are confirmed by numerical simulations and the formula we derive coincides with the formula of Herrero and Velázquez for specially constructed solutions.

On Spectra of Linearized Operators for Keller-Segel Models of Chemotaxis

We consider the phenomenon of collapse in the critical Keller-Segel equation (KS) which models chemotactic aggregation of micro-organisms underlying many social activities, e.g. fruiting body development and biofilm formation. Also KS describes the collapse of a gas of self-gravitating Brownian particles. We find the fluctuation spectrum around the collapsing family of steady states for these equations, which is instrumental in derivation of the critical collapse law. To this end we develop a rigorous version of the method of matched asymptotics for the spectral analysis of a class of second order differential operators containing the linearized Keller-Segel operators (and as we argue linearized operators appearing in nonlinear evolution problems). We explain how the results we obtain are used to derive the critical collapse law, as well as for proving its stability.

Fully parallel algorithm for simulating dispersion-managed wavelength-division-multiplexed optical fiber systems

An efficient numerical algorithm is presented for massively parallel simulations of dispersion-managed wavelength-division-multiplexed optical fiber systems. The algorithm is based on a weak nonlinearity approximation and independent parallel calculations of fast Fourier transforms on multiple CPUs. The algorithm allows one to implement numerical simulations M/2 times faster than a direct numerical simulation by a split-step method, where M is a number of CPUs in parallel network.

Nonlinearity Management in Dispersion Managed System

We propose using a nonlinear phase shift interferometric converter (NPSIC) (a new device) for lumped compensation of the nonlinearity in optical fibers. The NPSIC is a nonlinear analog of the Mach-Zehnder interferometer and provides a way to control the sign of the nonlinear phase shift. We investigate a potential use of NPSIC for compensation of the nonlinearity to make a dispersion-managed system closer to an ideal linear system. More importantly NPSIC can be used to essentially improve single channel capacity in the nonlinear regime.

Dispersion-managed soliton in a strong dispersion map limit

A dispersion-managed optical system with step-wise periodical variation of dispersion is studied in a strong dispersion map limit in the framework of path-averaged Gabitov-Turitsyn equation. The soliton solution is obtained by iterating the path-averaged equation analytically and numerically. An efficient numerical algorithm for obtaining of DM soliton shape is developed. The envelope of soliton oscillating tails is found to decay exponentially in time while the oscillations are described by a quadratic law.

On the boundary of the dispersion-managed soliton existence

A breathing soliton-like structure in dispersion-managed (DM) optical fiber system is studied. It is proven that for negative average dispersion the breathing soliton is forbidden provided that a modulus of average dispersion exceed a threshold which depends on the soliton amplitude.

Dispersion-managed soliton in optical fibers with zero average dispersion

The dispersion-managed (DM) optical system with step-wise periodical variation of dispersion is studied in the framework of path-averaged Gabitov-Turitsyn equation. The soliton solution is obtained by iterating the path-averaged equation. The dependence of soliton parameters on dispersion map strength is investigated together with the oscillating tails of soliton.
