Selection Rules for Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering from Tetragonal Copper-Oxides

We demonstrate the utility of point group representation theory for symmetry analysis in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. From its polarization-dependence, we show that a 5 eV inelastic feature in Sr2CuO2Cl2 has pure B1g symmetry and assign it to a transition in the cell-perturbation calculations of Simon, et. al. [Phys. Rev. B., 54, R3780 (1996)]. We discuss how Raman selection rules are broken at nonzero momentum transfer and how this can also act as a probe of wave function symmetry.

Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering from Valence Excitations in Insulating Copper-Oxides

We report resonant inelastic x-ray measurements of insulating La$_2$CuO$_4$ and Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$ taken with the incident energy tuned near the Cu K absorption edge. We show that the spectra are well described in a shakeup picture in 3rd order perturbation theory which exhibits both incoming and outgoing resonances, and demonstrate how to extract a spectral function from the raw data. We conclude by showing {\bf q}-dependent measurements of the charge transfer gap.

Fundamental Limit on ``Interaction Free'' Measurements

In ``interaction free'' measurements, one typically wants to detect the presence of an object without touching it with even a single photon. One often imagines a bomb whose trigger is an extremely sensitive measuring device whose presence we would like to detect without triggering it. We point out that all such measuring devices have a maximum sensitivity set by the uncertainty principle, and thus can only determine whether a measurement is ``interaction free'' to within a finite minimum resolution. We further discuss exactly what can be achieved with the proposed ``interaction free'' measurement schemes.

Laughlin liquid - Wigner solid transition at high density in wide quantum wells

Assuming that the phase transition between the Wigner solid and the Laughlin liquid is first-order, we compare ground-state energies to find features of the phase diagram at fixed $ν$. Rather than use the Coulomb interaction, we calculate the effective interaction in a square quantum well, and fit the results to a model interaction with length parameter $λ$ roughly proportional to the width of the well. We find a transition to the Wigner solid phase at high density in very wide wells, driven by the softening of the interaction at short distances, as well as the more well-known transition to the Wigner solid at low density, driven by Landau-level mixing.

Freezing of the quantum Hall liquid at $ν= $ 1/7 and 1/9

We compare the free energy computed from the ground state energy and low-lying excitations of the 2-D Wigner solid and the fractional quantum Hall liquid, at magnetic filling factors $ν= 1/7$ and 1/9. We find that the Wigner solid melts into the fractional quantum Hall liquid at roughly the same temperature as that of some recent luminescence experiments, while it remains a solid at the lower temperatures characteristic of the transport experiments. We propose this melting as a consistent interpretation of both sets of experiments.

Tunneling into a two-dimensional electron system in a strong magnetic field

We investigate the properties of the one-electron Green's function in an interacting two-dimensional electron system in a strong magnetic field, which describes an electron tunneling into such a system. From finite-size diagonalization, we find that its spectral weight is suppressed near zero energy, reaches a maximum at an energy of about $0.2e^{2}/εl_{c}$, and decays exponentially at higher energies. We propose a theoretical model to account for the low-energy behavior. For the case of Coulomb interactions between the electrons, at even-denominator filling factors such as $ν=1/2$, we predict that the spectral weight varies as $e^{-ω_0/|ω|}$, for $ω\rightarrow 0$.
