Spin Josephson effect with a single superconductor

A thin ferromagnetic layer on a bulk equal-spin-pairing triplet superconductor is shown to mediate a Josephson coupling between the spin $\uparrow$ and $\downarrow$ condensates of the superconductor. By deriving analytic expressions for the bound states at the triplet superconductor-ferromagnet interface, we show that this spin Josephson effect establishes an effective anisotropy axis in the ferromagnetic layer. The associated Josephson spin current is predicted to cause a measurable precession of the magnetization about the vector order parameter of the triplet superconductor.

Topologically protected flat zero-energy surface bands in non-centrosymmetric superconductors

Nodal non-centrosymmetric superconductors (NCS) have recently been shown to be topologically non-trivial. An important consequence is the existence of topologically protected flat zero-energy surface bands, which are related to the topological characteristics of the line nodes of the bulk gap via a bulk-boundary correspondence [Schnyder and Ryu, arXiv:1011.1438]. In this paper we examine these zero-energy surface bands using a quasiclassical theory. We determine their spectrum and derive a general condition for their existence in terms of the sign change of the gap functions. A key experimental signature of the zero-energy surface bands is a zero-bias peak in the tunneling conductance, which depends strongly on the surface orientation. This can be used as a fingerprint of a topologically non-trivial NCS.

Theory for Magnetism and Triplet Superconductivity in LiFeAs

Superconducting pnictides are widely found to feature spin-singlet pairing in the vicinity of an antiferromagnetic phase, for which nesting between electron and hole Fermi surfaces is crucial. LiFeAs differs from the other pnictides by (i) poor nesting properties and (ii) unusually shallow hole pockets. Investigating magnetic and pairing instabilities in an electronic model that incorporates these differences, we find antiferromagnetic order to be absent. Instead we observe almost ferromagnetic fluctuations which drive an instability toward spin-triplet p-wave superconductivity.

Andreev spectroscopy and surface density of states for a three-dimensional time-reversal invariant topological superconductor

A topological superconductor is a fully gapped superconductor that exhibits exotic zero-energy Andreev surface states at interfaces with a normal metal. In this paper we investigate the properties of a three-dimensional time reversal invariant topological superconductor by means of a two-band model with unconventional pairing in both the inter- and intraband channels. Due to the bulk-boundary correspondence the presence of Andreev surface states in this system is directly related to the topological structure of the bulk wavefunctions, which is characterized by a winding number. Using quasiclassical scattering theory we construct the spectrum of the Andreev bound states that appear near the surface and compute the surface density of states for various surface orientations. Furthermore, we consider the effects of band splitting, i.e., the breaking of an inversion-type symmetry, and demonstrate that in the absence of band splitting there is a direct transition between the fully gapped topologically trivial phase and the nontrivial phase, whereas in the presence of band splitting there exists a finite region of a gapless nodal superconducting phase between the fully gapped topologically trivial and nontrivial phases.

Spontaneous spin current due to triplet superconductor--ferromagnet interfaces

We examine the appearance of a spontaneous bulk spin current in a triplet superconductor in contact with a metallic ferromagnet. The spin current results from the spin-flip of Cooper pairs upon reflection from the interface with the ferromagnet, and is shown to display strong similarities to the spontaneous charge current in a Josephson junction. We express the spin current in terms of the Andreev reflection coefficients, which are derived by the construction of the quasiclassical scattering wavefunctions. The dependence of the spin current upon a number of parameters is investigated, in particular the orientation of the magnetic moment of the ferromagnet, the exchange splitting, the temperature, and the orbital pairing state of the triplet superconductor.

Spin excitations in the excitonic spin-density-wave state of the iron pnictides

Motivated by the iron pnictides, we examine the spin excitations in an itinerant antiferromagnet where a spin-density wave (SDW) originates from an excitonic instability of nested electron-like and hole-like Fermi pockets. Using the random phase approximation (RPA), we derive the Dyson equation for the transverse susceptibility in the excitonic SDW state. The Dyson equation is solved for two different two-band models, describing an antiferromagnetic insulator and metal, respectively. We determine the collective spin-wave dispersions and also consider the single-particle continua. The results for the excitonic models are compared with each other and also contrasted with the well-known SDW state of the Hubbard model. Despite the qualitatively different SDW states in the two excitonic models, their magnetic response shows many similarities. We conclude with a discussion of the relevance of the excitonic SDW scenario to the iron pnictides.

0-$π$ transition in magnetic triplet superconductor Josephson junctions

We examine a Josephson junction involving two arbitrary equal-spin-pairing unitary triplet superconductors and a ferromagnetic tunneling barrier. Using perturbation theory, we show how the interaction of the barrier moment with the spin of the tunneling triplet Cooper pairs can reverse the sign of the Josephson charge current. This also results in a Josephson spin current, which contains a phase-independent contribution due to reflection processes at the barrier. We verify our analytic predictions using a non-perturbative Bogoliubov-de Gennes method.

Functional superconductor interfaces from broken time-reversal symmetry

The breaking of time-reversal symmetry in a triplet superconductor Josephson junction is shown to cause a magnetic instability of the tunneling barrier. Using a Ginzburg-Landau analysis of the free energy, we predict that this novel functional behaviour reflects the formation of an exotic Josephson state, distinguished by the existence of fractional flux quanta at the barrier. The crucial role of the orbital pairing state is demonstrated by studying complementary microscopic models of the junction. Signatures of the magnetic instability are found in the critical current of the junction.

Excitonic spin density wave state in iron pnictides

We examine the appearance of a spin density wave in the FeAs parent compounds due to an excitonic instability. Using a realistic four-band model, we show that the magnetic state depends very sensitively upon the details of the band structure. We demonstrate that an orthorhombic distortion of the crystal enhances the stability of the antiferromagnetic order.

Origin and control of spin currents in a magnetic triplet Josephson junction

We study the appearance of a Josephson spin current in a model triplet superconductor junction with a magnetically-active tunnelling barrier. We find three distinct mechanisms for producing a spin current, and we provide a detailed discussion of the symmetry properties and the physical origins of each. By combining these three basic mechanisms, we find that it is possible to exercise fine control over the spin currents. In particular, we show that unlike the charge current, the spin currents on either side of the barrier need not be identical.

Interplay of ferromagnetism and triplet superconductivity in a Josephson junction

In this paper we extend our earlier analysis of the novel Josephson effect in triplet superconductor--ferromagnet--triplet superconductor (TFT) junctions [B. Kastening \emph{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf{96}}, 047009 (2006)]. In our more general formulation of the TFT junction we allow for potential scattering at the barrier and an arbitrary orientation of the ferromagnetic moment. Several new effects are found upon the inclusion of these extra terms: for example, we find that a Josephson current can flow even when there is vanishing phase difference between the superconducting condensates on either side of the barrier. The critical current for a barrier with magnetization parallel to the interface is calculated as a function of the junction parameters, and is found to display strong non-analyticities. Furthermore, the Josephson current switches first identified in our previous work are found to be robust features of the junction, while the unconventional temperature-dependence of the current is very sensitive to the extra terms in the barrier Hamiltonian.

Slave boson theory of the extended Falicov-Kimball model

The extended Falicov-Kimball model, with both an on-site hybridization potential and dispersive narrow band, is examined within the saddle-point approximation to the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave boson theory. We first set the hybridization potential to zero and find that the phase diagram depends strongly upon the orbital structure: for degenerate orbitals, a correlated-insulating state is found at sufficiently strong interaction strengths, whereas a finite orbital energy difference can lead to discontinuous valence transitions. The obtained phase diagram is very sensitive to the presence of a finite hybridization potential. As in Hartree-Fock theory, we find an enhancement of the hybridization by the inter-orbital Coulomb repulsion. The more precise treatment of correlation effects, however, leads to large deviations from the Hartree-Fock results. In the limit of vanishing hybridization an excitonic insulator state is only found when the orbitals are degenerate, which restricts this phase to a much smaller parameter space than in other available mean-field theories.

Charge Order in the Falicov-Kimball Model

We examine the spinless one-dimensional Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) below half-filling, addressing both the binary alloy and valence transition interpretations of the model. Using a non-perturbative technique, we derive an effective Hamiltonian for the occupation of the localized orbitals, providing a comprehensive description of charge order in the FKM. In particular, we uncover the contradictory ordering roles of the forward-scattering and backscattering itinerant electrons: the latter are responsible for the crystalline phases, while the former produces the phase separation. We find an Ising model describes the transition between the phase separated state and the crystalline phases; for weak-coupling we present the critical line equation, finding excellent agreement with numerical results. We consider several extensions of the FKM that preserve the classical nature of the localized states. We also investigate a parallel between the FKM and the Kondo lattice model, suggesting a close relationship based upon the similar orthogonality catastrophe physics of the associated single-impurity models.

Electronic polarons in an extended Falicov-Kimball model

We examine the one-dimensional spinless Falicov-Kimball model extended by a hybridization potential between the localized and itinerant electron states. Below half-filling we find a crossover from a mixed-valence metal to an integer-valence phase separated state with increasing on-site Coulomb repulsion. This crossover regime is characterized by local competition between the strong- and weak-coupling behaviour, manifested by the formation of an electronic polaron liquid. We identify this intermediate-coupling regime as a charge-analogy of the Griffiths phase; a phase diagram is presented and discussed in detail.

Bosonization solution of the Falicov-Kimball model

We use a novel approach to analyze the one dimensional spinless Falicov-Kimball model. We derive a simple effective model for the occupation of the localized orbitals which clearly reveals the origin of the known ordering. Our study is extended to a quantum model with hybridization between the localized and itinerant states; we find a crossover between the well-known weak- and strong-coupling behaviour. The existence of electronic polarons at intermediate coupling is confirmed. A phase diagram is presented and discussed in detail.

Fractionally Charged Polarons and Phase Separation in an Extended Falicov-Kimball Model

We present the first numerical study of the Falicov-Kimball model extended by an on-site hybridization away from the particle-hole symmetry point. Stable polaronic distortions of the charge-density wave (CDW) phase are observed when doping with a single hole. For moderate hole-doping, we find phase separation between a hole-rich homogeneous state and the usual CDW state. Excitonic order is enhanced around the hole-rich region, locally manifesting the global competition between this and the CDW phase. Associated with the hole-doping is a fractionalization of the electron density between the itinerant and localized electrons. The calculated local density of states at the polaron centre reveals this fractionalization to be the result of charge fluctuations induced by the hybridization. We propose a scanning tunneling microscope experiment to test our results.

Competing Orderings in an Extended Falicov-Kimball Model

We present a Hartree-Fock study of the Falicov-Kimball model extended by both on-site and non-local hybridization. We examine the interplay between excitonic effects and the charge-density wave (CDW) instability known to exist at zero hybridization. It is found that the CDW state remains stable in the presence of finite hybridization; for on-site hybridization the Coulomb interaction nevertheless strongly enhances the excitonic average above its value in the noninteracting system. In contrast, for non-local hybridization, we observe no such enhancement of the excitonic average or a spontaneous on-site hybridization potential. Instead, we find only a significant suppression of the excitonic correlations in the CDW state. A phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau analysis is also provided to understand the interplay.
