On the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation in n+1 dimensions: exact solutions, the Cauchy problem for small initial data and wave breaking

We study the (n+1)-dimensional generalization of the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (dKP) equation, a universal equation describing the propagation of weakly nonlinear, quasi one dimensional waves in n+1 dimensions, and arising in several physical contexts, like acoustics, plasma physics and hydrodynamics. For n=2, this equation is integrable, and it has been recently shown to be a prototype model equation in the description of the two dimensional wave breaking of localized initial data. We construct an exact solution of the n+1 dimensional model containing an arbitrary function of one variable, corresponding to its parabolic invariance, describing waves, constant on their paraboloidal wave front, breaking simultaneously in all points of it. Then we use such solution to build a uniform approximation of the solution of the Cauchy problem, for small and localized initial data, showing that such a small and localized initial data evolving according to the (n+1)-dimensional dKP equation break, in the long time regime, if and only if n=1,2,3; i.e., in physical space. Such a wave breaking takes place, generically, in a point of the paraboloidal wave front, and the analytic aspects of it are given explicitly in terms of the small initial data.

Nonperturbative Analysis of a Quantum Mechanical Model for Unstable Particles

We present a detailed non-perturbative analysis of the time-evolution of a well-known quantum-mechanical system - a particle between potential walls - describing the decay of unstable states. For sufficiently high barriers, corresponding to unstable particles with large lifetimes, we find an exponential decay for intermediate times, turning into an asymptotic power decay. We explicitly compute such power terms in time as a function of the coupling in the model. The same behavior is obtained with a repulsive as well as with an attractive potential, the latter case not being related to any tunnelling effect.

Solvable vector nonlinear Riemann problems, exact implicit solutions of dispersionless PDEs and wave breaking

We have recently solved the inverse spectral problem for integrable PDEs in arbitrary dimensions arising as commutation of multidimensional vector fields depending on a spectral parameter $λ$. The associated inverse problem, in particular, can be formulated as a non linear Riemann Hilbert (NRH) problem on a given contour of the complex $λ$ plane. The most distinguished examples of integrable PDEs of this type, like the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashivili (dKP), the heavenly and the 2 dimensional dispersionless Toda equations, are real PDEs associated with Hamiltonian vector fields. The corresponding NRH data satisfy suitable reality and symplectic constraints. In this paper, generalizing the examples of solvable NRH problems illustrated in \cite{MS4,MS5,MS6}, we present a general procedure to construct solvable NRH problems for integrable real PDEs associated with Hamiltonian vector fields, allowing one to construct implicit solutions of such PDEs parametrized by an arbitrary number of real functions of a single variable. Then we illustrate this theory on few distinguished examples for the dKP and heavenly equations. For the dKP case, we characterize a class of similarity solutions, a class of solutions constant on their parabolic wave front and breaking simultaneously on it, and a class of localized solutions breaking in a point of the $(x,y)$ plane. For the heavenly equation, we characterize two classes of symmetry reductions.

On the solutions of the second heavenly and Pavlov equations

We have recently solved the inverse scattering problem for one parameter families of vector fields, and used this result to construct the formal solution of the Cauchy problem for a class of integrable nonlinear partial differential equations connected with the commutation of multidimensional vector fields, like the heavenly equation of Plebanski, the dispersionless Kadomtsev - Petviashvili (dKP) equation and the two-dimensional dispersionless Toda (2ddT) equation, as well as with the commutation of one dimensional vector fields, like the Pavlov equation. We also showed that the associated Riemann-Hilbert inverse problems are powerfull tools to establish if the solutions of the Cauchy problem break at finite time,to construct their longtime behaviour and characterize classes of implicit solutions. In this paper, using the above theory, we concentrate on the heavenly and Pavlov equations, i) establishing that their localized solutions evolve without breaking, unlike the cases of dKP and 2ddT; ii) constructing the longtime behaviour of the solutions of their Cauchy problems; iii) characterizing a distinguished class of implicit solutions of the heavenly equation.

The dispersionless 2D Toda equation: dressing, Cauchy problem, longtime behavior, implicit solutions and wave breaking

We have recently solved the inverse spectral problem for one-parameter families of vector fields, and used this result to construct the formal solution of the Cauchy problem for a class of integrable nonlinear partial differential equations in multidimensions, including the second heavenly equation of Plebanski and the dispersionless Kadomtsev - Petviashvili (dKP) equation, arising as commutation of vector fields. In this paper we make use of the above theory i) to construct the nonlinear Riemann-Hilbert dressing for the so-called two dimensional dispersionless Toda equation $(exp(ϕ))_{tt}=ϕ_{ζ_1ζ_2}$, elucidating the spectral mechanism responsible for wave breaking; ii) we present the formal solution of the Cauchy problem for the wave form of it: $(exp(ϕ))_{tt}=ϕ_{xx}+ϕ_{yy}$; iii) we obtain the longtime behaviour of the solutions of such a Cauchy problem, showing that it is essentially described by the longtime breaking formulae of the dKP solutions, confirming the expected universal character of the dKP equation as prototype model in the description of the gradient catastrophe of two-dimensional waves; iv) we finally characterize a class of spectral data allowing one to linearize the RH problem, corresponding to a class of implicit solutions of the PDE.

On the remarkable relations among PDEs integrable by the inverse spectral transform method, by the method of characteristics and by the Hopf-Cole transformation

We establish deep and remarkable connections among partial differential equations (PDEs) integrable by different methods: the inverse spectral transform method, the method of characteristics and the Hopf-Cole transformation. More concretely, 1) we show that the integrability properties (Lax pair, infinitely-many commuting symmetries, large classes of analytic solutions) of (2+1)-dimensional PDEs integrable by the Inverse Scattering Transform method ($S$-integrable) can be generated by the integrability properties of the (1+1)-dimensional matrix Bürgers hierarchy, integrable by the matrix Hopf-Cole transformation ($C$-integrable). 2) We show that the integrability properties i) of $S$-integrable PDEs in (1+1)-dimensions, ii) of the multidimensional generalizations of the $GL(M,\CC)$ self-dual Yang Mills equations, and iii) of the multidimensional Calogero equations can be generated by the integrability properties of a recently introduced multidimensional matrix equation solvable by the method of characteristics. To establish the above links, we consider a block Frobenius matrix reduction of the relevant matrix fields, leading to integrable chains of matrix equations for the blocks of such a Frobenius matrix, followed by a systematic elimination procedure of some of these blocks. The construction of large classes of solutions of the soliton equations from solutions of the matrix Bürgers hierarchy turns out to be intimately related to the construction of solutions in Sato theory. 3) We finally show that suitable generalizations of the block Frobenius matrix reduction of the matrix Bürgers hierarchy generates PDEs exhibiting integrability properties in common with both $S$- and $C$- integrable equations.

On the solutions of the dKP equation: nonlinear Riemann Hilbert problem, longtime behaviour, implicit solutions and wave breaking

We make use of the nonlinear Riemann Hilbert problem of the dispersionless Kadomtsev Petviashvili equation, i) to construct the longtime behaviour of the solutions of its Cauchy problem; ii) to characterize a class of implicit solutions; iii) to elucidate the spectral mechanism causing the gradient catastrophe of localized solutions, at finite time as well as in the longtime regime, and the corresponding universal behaviours near breaking.

Integrable lattices and their sublattices II. From the B-quadrilateral lattice to the self-adjoint schemes on the triangular and the honeycomb lattices

An integrable self-adjoint 7-point scheme on the triangular lattice and an integrable self-adjoint scheme on the honeycomb lattice are studied using the sublattice approach. The star-triangle relation between these systems is introduced, and the Darboux transformations for both linear problems from the Moutard transformation of the B-(Moutard) quadrilateral lattice are obtained. A geometric interpretation of the Laplace transformations of the self-adjoint 7-point scheme is given and the corresponding novel integrable discrete 3D system is constructed.

Dressing method based on homogeneous Fredholm equation: quasilinear PDEs in multidimensions

In this paper we develop a dressing method for constructing and solving some classes of matrix quasi-linear Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) in arbitrary dimensions. This method is based on a homogeneous integral equation with a nontrivial kernel, which allows one to reduce the nonlinear PDEs to systems of non-differential (algebraic or transcendental) equations for the unknown fields. In the simplest examples, the above dressing scheme captures matrix equations integrated by the characteristics method and nonlinear PDEs associated with matrix Hopf-Cole transformations.

The general solution of the matrix equation $w_t+\sum\limits_{k=1}^nw_{x_k}ρ^{(k)}(w)=ρ(w)+[w,T\tildeρ(w)]$

We construct the general solution of the equation $w_t+\sum\limits_{k=1}^nw_{x_k}ρ^{(k)}(w)=ρ(w)+[w,T\tildeρ(w)]$, for the $N\times N$ matrix $w$, where $T$ is any constant diagonal matrix, $n, N \in \NN_+$ and $ρ^{(k)}, ρ, \tildeρ: \RR \to \RR$ are arbitrary analytic functions. Such a solution is based on the observation that, as $w$ evolves according to the above equation, the evolution of its spectrum decouples, and it is ruled by the scalar analogue of the above equation. Therefore the eigenvalues of $w$ and suitably normalized eigenvectors are the $N^2$ Riemann invariants. We also obtain, in the case $ρ=\tildeρ=0$, a system of $N^2$ non-differential equations characterizing such a general solution. We finally discuss reductions of the above matrix equation to systems of $N$ equations admitting, as Riemann invariants, the eigenvalues of $w$. The simplest example of such reductions is a particular case of the gas dynamics equations

Newtonian dynamics in the plane corresponding to straight and cyclic motions on the hyperelliptic curve $μ^2=ν^n-1, n\in{\Bbb Z}$: ergodicity, isochrony, periodicity and fractals

We study the complexification of the one-dimensional Newtonian particle in a monomial potential. We discuss two classes of motions on the associated Riemann surface: the rectilinear and the cyclic motions, corresponding to two different classes of real and autonomous Newtonian dynamics in the plane. The rectilinear motion has been studied in a number of papers, while the cyclic motion is much less understood. For small data, the cyclic time trajectories lead to isochronous dynamics. For bigger data the situation is quite complicated; computer experiments show that, for sufficiently small degree of the monomial, the motion is generically periodic with integer period, which depends in a quite sensitive way on the initial data. If the degree of the monomial is sufficiently high, computer experiments show essentially chaotic behaviour. We suggest a possible theoretical explanation of these different behaviours. We also introduce a one-parameter family of 2-dimensional mappings, describing the motion of the center of the circle, as a convenient representation of the cyclic dynamics; we call such mapping the center map. Computer experiments for the center map show a typical multi-fractal behaviour with periodicity islands. Therefore the above complexification procedure generates dynamics amenable to analytic treatment and possessing a high degree of complexity.

Inverse Scattering Problem for Vector Fields and the Cauchy Problem for the Heavenly Equation

We solve the inverse scattering problem for multidimensional vector fields and we use this result to construct the formal solution of the Cauchy problem for the second heavenly equation of Plebanski, a scalar nonlinear partial differential equation in four dimensions relevant in General Relativity, which arises from the commutation of multidimensional Hamiltonian vector fields.

The Cauchy Problem on the Plane for the Dispersionless Kadomtsev - Petviashvili Equation

We construct the formal solution of the Cauchy problem for the dispersionless Kadomtsev - Petviashvili equation as application of the Inverse Scattering Transform for the vector field corresponding to a Newtonian particle in a time-dependent potential. This is in full analogy with the Cauchy problem for the Kadomtsev - Petviashvili equation, associated with the Inverse Scattering Transform of the time dependent Schroedinger operator for a quantum particle in a time-dependent potential.

Partially integrable systems in multidimensions by a variant of the dressing method. 1

In this paper we construct nonlinear partial differential equations in more than 3 independent variables, possessing a manifold of analytic solutions with high, but not full, dimensionality. For this reason we call them ``partially integrable''. Such a construction is achieved using a suitable modification of the classical dressing scheme, consisting in assuming that the kernel of the basic integral operator of the dressing formalism be nontrivial. This new hypothesis leads to the construction of: 1) a linear system of compatible spectral problems for the solution $U(λ;x)$ of the integral equation in 3 independent variables each (while the usual dressing method generates spectral problems in 1 or 2 dimensions); 2) a system of nonlinear partial differential equations in $n$ dimensions ($n>3$), possessing a manifold of analytic solutions of dimension ($n-2$), which includes one largely arbitrary relation among the fields. These nonlinear equations can also contain an arbitrary forcing.

The Transition from Regular to Irregular Motions, Explained as Travel on Riemann Surfaces

We introduce and discuss a simple Hamiltonian dynamical system, interpretable as a 3-body problem in the complex plane and providing the prototype of a mechanism explaining the transition from regular to irregular motions as travel on Riemann surfaces. The interest of this phenomenology -- illustrating the onset in a deterministic context of irregular motions -- is underlined by its generality, suggesting its eventual relevance to understand natural phenomena and experimental investigations. Here only some of our main findings are reported, without detailing their proofs: a more complete presentation will be published elsewhere.
