NLO QCD corrections to t anti-t H production in hadron collisions

The Higgs boson H of the Standard Model can be searched for in the channels p pbar / pp -> t tbar H + X at the Tevatron and the LHC. The cross sections for these processes and the final-state distributions of the Higgs boson and top quarks are presented at next-to-leading order QCD. To calculate these QCD corrections, a special calculational technique for pentagon diagrams has been developed and the dipole subtraction formalism has been adopted for massive particles. The impact of the corrections on the total cross sections is characterized by K factors, the ratios of the cross sections in next-to-leading order over leading order QCD. At the central scale mu_0 = (2 m_t + M_H)/2 the K factors are found to be slightly below unity for the Tevatron (K \sim 0.8) and slightly above unity for the LHC (K \sim 1.2). Including the corrections significantly stabilizes the theoretical predictions for total cross sections and for the distributions in rapidity and transverse momentum of the Higgs boson and top quarks.

Sfermion Precision Measurements at a Linear Collider

At future e+- e- linear colliders, the event rates and clean signals of scalar fermion production - in particular for the scalar leptons - allow very precise measurements of their masses and couplings and the determination of their quantum numbers. Various methods are proposed for extracting these parameters from the data at the sfermion thresholds and in the continuum. At the same time, NLO radiative corrections and non-zero width effects have been calculated in order to match the experimental accuracy. The substantial mixing expected for the third generation sfermions opens up additional opportunities. Techniques are presented for determining potential CP-violating phases and for extracting tan(beta) from the stau sector, in particular at high values. The consequences of possible large mass differences in the stop and sbottom system are explored in dedicated analyses.

Reconstruction of Fundamental SUSY Parameters

We summarize methods and expected accuracies in determining the basic low-energy SUSY parameters from experiments at future e$^+$e$^-$ linear colliders in the TeV energy range, combined with results from LHC. In a second step we demonstrate how, based on this set of parameters, the fundamental supersymmetric theory can be reconstructed at high scales near the grand unification or Planck scale. These analyses have been carried out for minimal supergravity [confronted with GMSB for comparison], and for a string effective theory.

Identifying the Higgs Spin and Parity in Decays to Z Pairs

Higgs decays to Z boson pairs may be exploited to determine spin and parity of the Higgs boson, a method complementary to spin-parity measurements in Higgs-strahlung. For a Higgs mass above the on-shell ZZ decay threshold, a model-independent analysis can be performed, but only by making use of additional angular correlation effects in gluon-gluon fusion at the LHC and gamma-gamma fusion at linear colliders. In the intermediate mass range, in which the Higgs boson decays into pairs of real and virtual Z bosons, threshold effects and angular correlations, parallel to Higgs-strahlung, may be adopted to determine spin and parity, though high event rates will be required for the analysis in practice.

The Reconstruction of Supersymmetric Theories at High Energy Scales

The reconstruction of fundamental parameters in supersymmetric theories requires the evolution to high scales, where the characteristic regularities in mechanisms of supersymmetry breaking become manifest. We have studied a set of representative examples in this context: minimal supergravity and a left--right symmetric extension; gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking; and superstring effective field theories. Through the evolution of the parameters from the electroweak scale the regularities in different scenarios at the high scales can be unravelled if precision analyses of the supersymmetric particle sector at e+ e- linear colliders are combined with analyses at the LHC.

Analysis of the Neutralino System in Supersymmetric Theories -- Addendum --

In the preceding reference [CKMZ] we have shown how the fundamental gaugino and higgsino parameters of the chargino and neutralino system in supersymmetric theories can be determined in high--precision experiments at $e^+e^-$ linear colliders. Within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model these parameters can be reconstructed completely even if only the light charginos $\tildeχ^\pm_1$ and the light neutralinos $\tildeχ^0_1$ and $\tildeχ^0_2$ are kinematically accessible in the initial phase of these machines, as demonstrated in this Addendum.

Analysis of the Neutralino System in Supersymmetric Theories

Charginos $\tildeχ^\pm$ and neutralinos $\tildeχ^0$ in supersymmetric theories can be produced copiously at $e^+e^-$ colliders and their properties can be measured with high accuracy. Consecutively to the chargino system, in which the SU(2) gaugino parameter $M_2$, the higgsino mass parameter $μ$ and $\tanβ$ can be determined, the remaining fundamental supersymmetry parameter in the gaugino/higgsino sector of the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, the U(1) gaugino mass $M_1$, can be analyzed in the neutralino system, including its modulus and its phase in CP-noninvariant theories. The CP properties of the neutralino system are characterized by unitarity quadrangles. Analytical solutions for the neutralino mass eigenvalues and for the mixing matrix are presented for CP-noninvariant theories in general. They can be written in compact form for large supersymmetric mass parameters. The closure of the neutralino and chargino systems can be studied by exploiting sum rules for the pair-production processes in $e^+e^-$ collisions. Thus the picture of the non-colored gaugino and higgsino complex in supersymmetric theories can comprehensively be reconstructed in these experiments.

Higgs Radiation off Top Quarks at the Tevatron and the LHC

Higgs bosons can be searched for in the channels $p\bar p/pp\to t\bar tH+X$ at the Tevatron and the LHC. We have calculated the QCD corrections to these processes in the Standard Model at next-to-leading order. The higher-order corrections reduce the renormalization and factorization scale dependence considerably and stabilize the theoretical predictions for the cross sections. At the central scale $μ=(2m_t+M_H)/2$ the properly defined $K$ factors are slightly below unity for the Tevatron ($K \sim 0.8$) and slightly above unity for the LHC ($K \sim 1.2$).

Measuring the Spin of the Higgs Boson

By studying the threshold dependence of the excitation curve and the angular distribution in Higgs-strahlung at e+e- colliders, e+e- -> HZ, the spin of the Higgs boson in the Standard Model and related extensions can be determined unambiguously in a model-independent way.

Production of MSSM Higgs Bosons in Photon-Photon Collisions

The heavy neutral Higgs bosons H, A in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model can be produced as single resonances at high-energy gamma gamma colliders. We have studied the prospects of the search for these particles in b\bar b and neutralino-pair final states. The Higgs bosons can be found with masses up to 70-80% of the initial e^\pm e^- collider energy for medium values of tan(beta), i.e. in areas of the supersymmetric parameter space not accessible at other colliders.

The Standard Model: Physical Basis and Scattering Experiments

We present an introduction into the basic concepts of the Standard Model, i.e. the gauge theories of the forces and the Higgs mechanism for generating masses. The Glashow-Salam-Weinberg theory of the electroweak interactions will be described in detail. The key experiments are reviewed, including the precision tests at high energies. Finally, the limitations and possible physics areas beyond the Standard Model are discussed.

Reconstructing Supersymmetric Theories at High Energy Scales

We have studied the reconstruction of supersymmetric theories at high scales by evolving the fundamental parameters from the electroweak scale upwards. Universal minimal supergravity and gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking have been taken as representative alternatives. Pseudo-fixed point structures require the low-energy boundary values to be measured with high precision.

Physics Impact of GigaZ

By running the prospective high-energy e^+ e^- collider TESLA in the GigaZ mode on the Z resonance, experiments can be performed on the basis of more than 10^9 Z events. They will allow the measurement of the effective electroweak mixing angle to an accuracy of approximately +- 10^-5. Likewise the W boson mass is expected to be measurable with an error of about 6 MeV near the W^+ W^- threshold. In this note, we study the accuracy with which the Higgs boson mass can be determined from loop corrections to these observables in the Standard Model. The comparison with a directly observed Higgs boson may be used to constrain new physics scales affecting the virtual loops. We also study constraints on the heavy Higgs particles predicted in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, which are very difficult to observe directly for large masses. Similarly, it is possible to constrain the mass of the heavy scalar top particle.

Physics with an e+e- Linear Collider at High Luminosity

The physics potential is briefly summarized for an e+e- linear collider operating at center-of-mass energies up to \sqrt{s} = 1 TeV and delivering integrated luminosities up to \int L = 0.5 ab^(-1) in one to two years. This machine will allow us to perform precision studies of the top quark and the electroweak gauge bosons at the per-mille level. It will be an ideal instrument to investigate the properties of the Higgs boson and to establish essential elements of the Higgs mechanism as the fundamental mechanism for breaking the electroweak symmetries. In the area beyond the Standard Model, new particles and their interactions can be discovered and explored comprehensively. In supersymmetric theories, the mechanism of the symmetry breaking can be investigated experimentally and the underlying unified theory can be reconstructed. The high precision allows stable extrapolations up to scales near the Planck mass.
