Coherent control and decoherence of charge states in quantum dots

This Chapter contains a review of the recent results, both experimental and theoretical, related to optical control of carriers confined in semiconductor quantum dots. The physics of Rabi oscillations of exciton and biexciton occupations, as well as time-domain interference experiments are discussed. Next, the impact of carrier--phonon interaction in a semiconductor structure is described and modern methods of theoretical description of the carrier--phonon kinetics and of the resulting dephasing are presented.

Two-photon coherent polarization flipping of confined excitons

A two-photon process leading to coherent transitions between the two circularly polarized exciton states in a quantum dot is studied. It is shown that optical flipping of the exciton polarization is possible with picosecond laser pulses. The process is closely related to two-photon Rabi oscillations of a biexciton but it is much more stable against shifts of the laser frequency.

Phonon-assisted excitation transfer in quantum dot molecules

We derive a quantum-kinetic description of phonon-assisted F{ö}rster transfer between two coupled quantum dots (a quantum dot molecule). We show that the exciton state decays to the ground state of the QDM via a combination of the Rabi rotation and exponential decay. For moderately spaced dots this process takes place on a picosecond time scale.

Phonon-induced decoherence for a quantum dot spin qubit operated by Raman passage

We study single-qubit gates performed via stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) on a spin qubit implemented in a quantum dot system in the presence of phonons. We analyze the interplay of various kinds of errors resulting from the carrier-phonon interaction as well as from quantum jumps related to nonadiabaticity and calculate the fidelity as a function of the pulse parameters. We give quantitative estimates for an InAs/GaAs system and identify the parameter values for which the error is considerably minimized, even to values below $10^{-4}$ per operation.

Manifestation of fundamental quantum complementarities in time-domain interference experiments with quantum dots: A theoretical analysis

A theoretical analysis is presented showing that fundamental complementarity between the particle-like properties of an exciton confined in a semiconductor quantum dot and the ability of the same system to show interference may be studied in a time domain interference experiment, similar to those currently performed. The feasibility of such an experiment, including required pulse parameters and the dephasing effect of the environment, is studied.

"Which path" decoherence in quantum dot experiments

We analyze and interpret recent optical experiments with semiconductor quantum dots. We derive a quantitative relation between the amount of information transferred into the environment and the optical polarization that may be observed in a spectroscopy experiment.

Reducing decoherence of the confined exciton state in a quantum dot by pulse-sequence control

We study the phonon-induced dephasing of the exciton state in a quantum dot excited by a sequence of ultra-short pulses. We show that the multiple-pulse control leads to a considerable improvement of the coherence of the optically excited state. For a fixed control time window, the optimized pulsed control often leads to a higher degree of coherence than the control by a smooth single Gaussian pulse. The reduction of dephasing is considerable already for 2-3 pulses.

On exciton decoherence in quantum dots

The effects resulting due to dressing of an exciton with phonons are analysed as the source of unavoidable decoherence of orbital degrees of freedom in quantum dots. The dressing with longitudinal optical phonons results in energetic shift of order of a few meV even of the ground state of exciton in a state-of-the-art InAs/GaAs dot and the mediating role of longitudinal acoustical phonons is essential in this process. The characteristic time needed for dressing of the exciton with optical phonons is of a picosecond order. That time can be regarded as the lowest limit for decoherence for optically driven quantum gates employing self-assembled quantum dot structures.
