Shapeshifting diffractive optical devices

In optical devices like diffraction gratings and Fresnel lenses, light wavefront is engineered through the structuring of device surface morphology, within thicknesses comparable to the light wavelength. Fabrication of such diffractive optical elements involves highly accurate multi-step lithographic processes that in fact set into stone both the device morphology and optical functionality. In this work, we introduce shapeshifting diffractive optical elements directly written on an erasable photoresist. We first develop a lithographic configuration that allows writing/erasing cycles of aligned optical elements directly in the light path. Then, we show the realization of complex diffractive gratings with arbitrary combinations of grating vectors. Finally, we demonstrate a shapeshifting diffractive lens that is reconfigured in the light-path in order to change the imaging parameters of an optical system.

Unconventional ratiometric-enhanced optical sensing of oxygen by mixed-phase TiO2

We show that mixed-phase titanium dioxide (TiO2) can be effectively employed as an unconventional, inorganic, dual-emitting and ratiometric optical sensor of O2. Simultaneous availability of rutile and anatase TiO2 PL and their peculiar anti-correlated PL responses to O2 allow using their ratio as measurement parameter associated to O2 concentration, leading to an experimental responsivity being by construction larger than the one obtainable for single-phase PL detection. A proof of this concept in given, showing a two-fold enhancement of the optical responsivity provided by the ratiometric approach. Besides the peculiar ratiometric-enhanced responsivity, other characteristics of mixed phase TiO2 can be envisaged as favorable for O2 optical probing, namely: a) low production costs, b) absence of heterogeneous components, c) self-supporting properties. These characteristics encourage experimenting its use for applications requiring high indicator quantities at competitive price, possibly also tackling the need to develop supporting matrixes that carry the luminescent probes and avoiding issues related to the use of different components for ratiometric sensing.

On quantitative analysis of interband recombination dynamics: Theory and application to bulk ZnO

The issue of the quantitative analysis of time-resolved photoluminescence experiments is addressed by developing and describing two approaches for determination of unimolecular lifetime, bimolecular recombination coefficient, and equilibrium free-carrier concentration, based on a quite general second-order expression of the electron-hole recombination rate. Application to the case of band-edge emission of ZnO single crystals is reported, evidencing the signature of sub-nanosecond second-order recombination dynamics for optical transitions close to the interband excitation edge. The resulting findings are in good agreement with the model prediction and further confirm the presence, formerly evidenced in literature by non-optical methods, of near-surface conductive layers in ZnO crystals with sheet charge densities of about 3÷5*10^13 cm^-2
