Possibility of the detection of classical novae with the shield of the INTEGRAL-spectrometer SPI

The shield of the INTEGRAL spectrometer provides a large detection area with a wide field-of-view. Calculations have been performed to check whether the temporal analysis of the counting rate of the SPI anticoincidence allows the detection of explosions of novae. The background rate of the shield as well as its response to gamma-ray have been modelled with monte-carlo simulations. Accounting for uncertainties in the rate of novae, their distribution in the Galaxy and their light curves in hard X-ray domain, the number of nova explosions detectable with this method during the INTEGRAL mission, is estimated. Such observationnal mode will allow to improve our knowledge on nuclear runaway in novae. Since the maximum of magnitude in the visible happens later than in gamma-ray, SPI will provide alert for optical observations.

Deep SIGMA observations of the central square degree of the Galaxy

The Center of the Milky Way emits radiation through all the electromagnetic spectrum due to the presence of several astrophysical phenomena. Various scientifical questions remain unsolved in the picture that emerge from observations, the main one being the presence and activity of a supermassive black hole at the Galactic Center. Also in the X-ray band a strong diffuse emission is detected up to 22 keV, it has been suggested that its origin is linked to past high energy activity of the Galactic Center. The French SIGMA soft gamma ray telescope on board the Russian Granat satellite observed the Galacti Center (GC) for abour 9 X 10^6 seconds from 1990 to the end of 1997. Its unique imaging capabilities coupled with the unprecedented exposure already allowed us to set preliminary constraints on the persistent high energy emission from Sgr A*. Here we present a new analysis of the complete set of observations of this region taking into account the possible presence of diffuse emission in the low energy channels. This allows us both to test current advection models of high energy emission from Sgr A* and to investigate on past high energy activity.

Two Distinct Modes In The Low (Hard) State Of Cyg X-1 And 1E1740-294

The entire dataset of the GRANAT/SIGMA observations of Cyg X-1 and 1E1740.7-294 in 1990-1994 was analyzed in order to search for correlations between primary observational characteristics of the hard X-ray emission - hard X-ray luminosity L_X, hardness of the spectrum (quantified in terms of the best fit thermal bremsstrahlung temperature kT) and the RMS of short term flux variations. Two distinct modes of the kT vs. L_X dependence were found for both sources. At low luminosity - below the level corresponding approximately to the gamma_1 state of Cyg X-1 - the kT increases as the L_X increases. Above the luminosity level of ~1.2L_gamma_1 the spectrum hardness is nearly constant (kT ~150 keV) and does not depend on the luminosity. In the case of Cyg X-1 the correlation of similar kind was found between the spectrum hardness and RMS of the short term flux variations. The increase of the kT, corresponding to the increasing branch on the kT vs. L_X diagram, is accompanied with increase of the RMS from few percent level to ~10-15%. Further increase of the RMS is not accompanied with change of the kT and does not correlate with changes in the luminosity.
